Ultimate Uncut Subtitiles

I've just found out something, starting from "Goku Held Hostage" dvd and up till the most recent Ultimate Uncut dvd (Saiyan Invasion) . The dvds only have japanese subtitiles. Even though I went to the menu and specificly press English subtitle on. The previous ones had both English and Japanese subtitiles.

Anyone notice this?

Sorry cant help u there since I have only been able to buy vol.1 and 2 of the UU. There so expensives, but anyway I hope someone here can help u causethis dvd has been out for some time since last august. Surely it has to be a deffect.

FUNimation announced a while back that they were discontinuing 'dubtitles' (The English dub, SFX ladened "for the hearing impaired" subtitles). This isn't a good thing, as all it's doing is leaving people out who would previously benefit from this service. Sure, there are subtitles for the Japanese track, and people may say "well just use those!", but when you're a deaf person (not that I am one, I have a coup[le of friends who are though), your perspective on the issue changes somewhat.

One reason they need both is that because the closed captioning (aka dubtitles) has audio cues in them as well. What I mean by this is if you hear something off screen, it will say what's happening because a deaf person wouldn't know otherwise.

Yeah, imagine you are a 7 year old deaf kid who loves DBZ. Your mom buys you the DVD and you can only see the Japanese subtitles. But guess what? Theres cussing! Your parents see this, and take DBZ from you.

Well, if someone was watching the UUEs, then there would be cussing regardless of whether they were using the subtitles or closed captioning.

By the way, I should clarify that 'Japanese subtitles' is not the correct term because this would imply they are in Japanese. They are still English subtitles, but meant to be viewed with the Japanese audio track.

The UUE dub is the one with the major swears thrown in left and right.

Not the Japanese version.

The UUE dub is the one with the major swears thrown in left and right. Not the Japanese version.

The Ultimate Uncuts really do not start swearing till the end of the Saiyan Saga,and even then there is only like 1 to 3 cuss words per Episode.But from reading Funi's subtitles for the Japanese version there is about 3 to 5 cuss words in the japanese version per episode.

We've had this discussions before - there are no "swear words" in Japanese. It's not about certain words being 'offensive' it's about saying something in an offensive manner.

Probably. Kusottare has been used a number of times in DragonBall, yet the article states it's too strong a word for TV.

I love Wikipedia, but I try to avoid reading things about Japan (or certian specific cultures) because it's more often than not written by folk who are too far into the idea that they are "right", and by that, I mean "don't know any better".

It does not surprise me in the lightest that a word would be censored. In Mexico, one cannot say chichi on daytime TV. It is a mexican slang word for the more common Spanish tetas or tits. It is a swear word of a strong nature hence the status. It's not the only one out there even...worse words exist, like in the US and other countries.

It's funny considering how well the joke in her name works in both Mexico and Japan, what with Roshi thinking of another thing that ChiChi stands for. >_>
