"Unified Toriyama Theory?"
I was wondering...is it at all possible for all of his manga to take place in basically the same world? We know Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball do, and Neko Majin in some parallel/parody universe of it. What about all the rest? I haven't read them all, so anyone who can point out reasons why it wouldn't work, feel free to do so.
(Inspired by reading the first couple of volumes of Dr. Slump last night; the 21st Budokai wasn't the FIRST time Kami-sama had to restore the moon!)

Well, not having read Dr. Slump (the shame...) I can't say too much, but doesn't Dr. Slump use a different calendar, with months named after fish or something? That would be my first indication that they aren't in the same world.
And Neko Majin is irreputedly a gag manga. It's not meant to be in the same 'continuum' as DragonBall. The best parallel is to treat it the same as a movie.

(é) Yeah, I'm famous. Super famous. I start things.

Well, er, seeing as how Goku and General Blue crashland in Penguin Village and run right into "Dr. Slump" himself, as well as basically the rest of the cast...yeah, I'd say so.
Its location was even given on one of the Daizenshuu maps, however much you trust that.
As for the different calendar...well, Penguin Village is a weird place. They feel the need to announce "It's morning" or "It's night" as if this were the latest world-shaking news.

Turn A Dragonball? That was the first thing that came to mind when I read the thread title.
Anyway, I would have to say "no" on this issue. Toriyama(far as I know) never suggested that all of his works exists in one continuum. That, and I don't really see the interest in trying to tie in everything together.
I'm not saying you can't, but the topic strikes me as kinda "eh" to begin with.

As far as I know, not only does Dr. Sump use different months, but the two series are in completely different time periods from each other. Dragon Ball takes place in the 700-800 AD era, while Dr. Slump occurs...well, I don't know exactly, but I think much later, in terms of years.
It's just that Toriyama likes his older series to make an appearance in a new series, probably out of nostalgia or something like that.
So...yeah..

The Dr. Slump manga says it takes place (in the early volumes at least) 1980-1981. DB/DBZ they dates of the years only come from those daizenshu things as I've never seen any years referred to in the manga.Saiyan wrote:As far as I know, not only does Dr. Sump use different months, but the two series are in completely different time periods from each other. Nonetheless, the Dr. Slump characters did appear in the Dragonball manga, so they must be on somewhat of a same timeline.
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

I don't think any of Toriyama's manga take place in the same world. The worlds all have vastly different physics and geography. Cameos and similar elements are only narural since Mr. Toriyama is very humor and nonsense based and he is only one man so he's fishing in the same bucket of ideas. Even Neko Majin appears to be an alternate universe of some sort. There really doesn't need to be any logic to character appearances and timelines, poetic liscense people.

Actually, it's the "age 700" era. A.D. was a mistranslation.Saiyan wrote:As far as I know, not only does Dr. Sump use different months, but the two series are in completely different time periods from each other. I'm going to agree with Mr Announcer.
Actually if we took it as a flowing timeline it would be Dr Slump before Dragon Ball since a lot of the slump characters are older in the cross over story. I think really you take them as their own worlds, but with cross over for joke purposes. Dr Slump even has it's own "kame" who is not a loveable old Namek ;3 Neko Z also has it's own thing going on since you get two extra saiyans, a Vegeta who's working for Frieza still all in a post Buu world XD
Enjoy it don't think too hard on it.

The is a chapter in the first Dr. Slump manga where Arale time travels...
I wouldn't look to much into this. Technically it could and it could not. Theres no helping that it's alreayd in the manga and since there's techinally no right answer or explanation for it than I say ignore it and let it be.
(I personally think it would be cool if they were in the same continuum... Then maybe we could see what Arale looks like in a grown body

Just remember, everytime something bad is happening to you. Something even worse is happening to someone else.
