The striking similarity between Son Goku and..... Luffy??!

Post by Smooth Criminal » Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:20 am

Hey there, Dragonball fans. Perhaps you have seen One Piece before, perhaps not. I myself am new to the series, and while I don't want to get too far off topic from "Dragon Ball General Discussion," I must say this series/manga amazes me. Terrific story, terrific humor, terrific characters.

And speaking of characters, that leads me right into the purpose of this topic. Now, we all know the character of Son Goku. (From here on out I'll be referring to the child version of Goku. While it may be argued that he remains the same 'ol Goku throughout all of DB/Z, I am of the viewpoint that when the series took a more dramatic turn, the character of Goku changed as well somewhat) Son Goku, to me, was the perfect main character: His oblivious, carefree attitude was charming and I really enjoyed watching him be a silly ass. He and Bulma were absolutely perfect together.

Now, watching through these early episodes of One Piece, I can't help but notice that Goku and Luffy are so much alike! Luffy, too, shares that charming carefree attitude that we loved so much in Goku. He has no regard for how things are "supposed to be," he simply speaks what's on his mind and always has it set on his ultimate goal... with a smile on his face. He's a character you can't help but love, just like young Son Goku!

Has anyone else noticed these parallels between Goku and Luffy? If not, I'd suggest going back and watching the early arcs of Dragon Ball. I know Mike is a fan of One Piece- What do you think? Any Dragon Ball fan owes it to themselves to check out this anime/manga if they haven't already. I realize that I'm probably the last person on earth to see the show, but I see a little bit of Goku in everything that Luffy does, and it makes me happy on the inside.

Also, Kuririn is the voice actor for Luffy. And that, too, makes me happy on the inside. Because Kuririn rocks.

OK, time to hear your thoughts on the matter!

Yeah... Oda freakin' worships Toriyama. Here's an interview http://www.thegrandline.com/odainterview.html

Yep, noticed DBZ character similarities among other One Piece characters as well. Don't forget Goku and Luffy's appetites.

Too bad Funimation couldn't have gotten One Piece, then we could have had Krillin and Luffy share a voice on this side of the Pacific as well. Then again, I would have preferred Lori Steele (Young Krillin) do Luffy's voice to Bella Hudson.

I too would have prefered they got One Piece, but Sonny Strait just doesn't seem fit to be Luffy. :P

They WERE looking into getting it while the rights were still up in the air (Yu-Gi-Oh! as well) but then 4Kids came over and snatches both of them up :<

Which infuriates me because 4Kids will probably never release then uncut like FUNi probably would have. Aaargh!

P.S. Those two volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh! uncut don't count since we'll probably never see any more.

Anyone feel like joining me in the forming of the U.O.M.f.t.U.C.R.o.O.P.a.Y.G.O!* ? It's a worthy cause, and costs only $25 to join. Think of it! 4Kids will crumble at our feet!

I've been a fan of the series (and the manga) for about a good 2 years, so yeah, the similarities between Son Goku & Monkey D. Luffy were very much prevailant throughout the One Piece series & that's infact one of the major reasons I have a deep interest in the series. Son Goku was my favorite character throughout the Dragon Ball manga & TV series, so when I saw One Piece, I was hooked. The art style was also somewhat reminiscent of Toriyama's early Dragon Ball days.

Also, Goku used to use the Niyobo, a stick that could stretch. Amoung other things, Luffy can stretch.

They have their simularities but I also feel they have their differences. For example Goku often cares more about a good fight, which Luffy is devoted to his friends or "Nakama" as fans prefer to use. Second Luffy has, in my opinion, used more strategy in fights. He doesn't just powerup and release a super powerful attack all the time.

* SPOILER. If you've not seen past Arabasta, beware*

For example against Kuro he broke half his claws, against Kreig he shattered the blade on his spear and he splashed splashed water onto Crocodile to make him tangable.

*End Spoiler*

Sure there were times when young Goku used some strategy but I don't feel it's as often.

Personally I don't view Luffy as a crabon copy of Goku and if anything I think he's a better character (I've really gone off Goku recently).

Yeah, Luffy seems to be a fleshed out character than Son Goku, but then again which modern shonen character isn't?

One Piece isn't the only other manga that has stunning similarities to Dragon ball...Look at Jiraiya from Naruto and Kame'Sennin... :D

In my humble opinion Naruto at times has too much in common with DB.

One Piece has a lot in common with DB, an ongoing search, meeting new friends, lots of humour, crazy abilities (rathee than just more and more powerful enimies).

Naruto's got a lot in common with DBZ, less humour and escalating power.

That and both main characters wear orange and blue clothing, their primary rival/friend has black spikey hair and a bit of a tempter, both main characters had hidden powers that they unleashed in tight situations, both have a perverted hermit who specializes in a specific animal, the main characters of both series can charge up energy in their hands, both have fights that could never occur in real life, both have a white skinned villain that's can be an absolute dick, both have a kid looking up to and trying to be like his friend that he's given a name to (Piccolo-san and Narutonii-chan), both have a blonde woman with looks and could kick your ass quite easily and is not normal in a way and..

That was the longest sentence EVER.
Just... Need... To... Get my... Breath back...

I'm a Dragonball purist, but seeing as though One Piece is so similar to DBZ... I think I'll reconsider. If it's on Toonami UK, that is.

The dub isn't the best medium to watch it through...

Go manga. Or fansub. Trust me, One Piece dubbed will give you the wrong impression. It did for me at first anyway.
