Make Your Own Filler!

Post by Kaboom » Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:32 pm

Alright, folks. Here's yet another crazy attempt of mine to get you bumpkins to be creative.

So, ya hate filler, do you? (I'm not poiting fingers, just talking generally) Well, then... let's see you do better than Toei!

If you think you're up to it, come up with a little side-story for our beloved heroes of the Dragonball world! It could be a small, light-hearted, humorous "episode," or it could be on the scale of a movie! The sky's the limit!

But let's try to be a little specific! For example, be sure to figure out where and when your "filler" takes place, and let's try to have it fit in the story, shall we! (No picnics amongst the cherry trees the day before the Cell games, and things of that sort...)

I'd post one of my ideas as an example, but it's getting late. So I'm signing off, and wil post it tomorrow! Let's see what we can do!

I used to work on a fan comic that filled in the whole span of time between dragonball and Z. It was very gag oriented but basically it followed Gokuh and company's journey as he looks once again for the four star ball because by Z he's already collected three of them. Yeah, it was pretty huge piece of filler, good times, good times. Makes me want to pick it up again.

Not me - but I'll promote this every chance I get. It might be the best fan-made creation I've ever seen.

*Joins Desire in his support * I rarely read fan creations (as I really don't like em'), but boy this one is pretty good. It's very Undragonball-ish though, so that might not appeal to others that are avid fans of Toriyama's storytelling & presentation. I was a bit skeptical about it first but the narratives are just awesome & it stands alone as a good story Dragon Ball or not. It would definitely make decent filler, but I'm not so sure it will fit in very well with the series as its tone is majorly different from your happy-go-lucky, fighting Dragon Ball fare, but definitely a must read.

Well, after posting at the current Tenshinhan thread, I thought of a semi-interesting filler moment that's at least worthy of being shown: After Boo destroys nearly all of Earth's population, Ten and Chaozu decide to come and try to help. For the sake of my filler, I'm gonna say that Ten and Chaozu have been travelling the planet to not only train harder, but to find themselves (the whole Crane Hermit influence still kinda messes with their brains).

So, they have to pack everything they have at the moment and head straight to Boo's location. After a quick Ki sensing, they realize that Boo's reached Kami's Temple, making them even more anxious to reach there to help all they can. Hours pass as they continue to fly onward. However, they notice that their comrades' Kis are long gone [So, this would be when Boo's eaten everyone at the Lookout and Gotenks and Piccolo are still in the RoSaT] and Chaozu begins to get cold feet [If you wish, I guess you could insert some flashbacks of Ten and Chaozu throughout the series, as Ten tries to persuade Chaozu to continue on with him, which he does.].

Now, as the two get closer, they suddenly sense Piccolo and an unknown guy's Ki (Gotenks) and eventually Goku. Calmed down now that there's other survivors that they know of, the two make a plan to try and stop Boo with their own skills (you know: Taiyoken, psychic abilities, etc.). I'm stuck here, so be creative. Anyways, part of the plan is that Chauzu hides among the rocks while Ten executes the rest of his plan (again, just be creative onabout the details). However, Ten gets knocked uncounscious by Boo, and Chaozu is left hiding not knowing what to do.

This is sure better than that crappy Mr. Satan and Bee trying to survive filler, eh? Also note that my filler would be shown in parts between the canon; small doses as opposed to big gulps, y'know.

I wouldn't mind seeing some filler where Goku first arrives at Uubu's village and begins to teach him after meeting Uubu's fellow villagers along with his siblings and parents.
On hiatus.

Hmm. Well, I have a few. More of the Humans training for the 23rd Budokai. Just little side adventures along their travels. Some funny adventures for Goten and Trunks leading up to the Budokai there could be fun too. Or seeing the tournament that Hercule won to become tome the Champ, prior to the Cell games. XD

Trunks' visit to tell the central timeline cast that he defeated the Artificial Humans (and Cell).

Goku meeting his Grandpa in the afterlife, during the 7 years prior to the Boo arc.

Vegeta watching the events between his sacrifice and being brought back to battle Boo (ends up fusing into Vegetto).

More Yamcha playing Baseball. Lots more.

Thanks for the support Desire and Sebastian. Yeah the tone at the beginning is pretty somber, which I felt was appropriate for how the story develops. The current issue I'm working on is more humor in tone actually (I tried to go with themes Toriyama typically did). I felt the somber beginning made sense in establishing a setting, considering how screwed up Yamcha's life was at the time and I needed to give him some motivation. However, I haven't forgotten that it is Dragonball and humor is essential.

Anyway, on topic, in case anyone didn't know, my filler story is about Yamcha, set during the 7 years after the Cell games. I'm attempting to delve into his past since he's the only Z fighter never given a hint of back story. I wanted to answer a lot of questions about his past as well as tell an epic tale set in the present. Questions such as "where did he get his scars", "where did he learn wolf kung fu", "why was he afraid of women", "how did he become a bandit" and "how does he seem to know so much about every martial artist/ legend/ mystical artifact (i.e. the nyoi-bo)" are covered. Along with the backstory, they help connect different things in the Dragonball world we're all familiar with, such as the different animal fighting styles.

As for the present day plot, details aside, I'm attempting to answer why exactly he gave up fighting, what went wrong with his relationship with Bulma, and a load of other things I can't say without spoiling the story, but with that, I'm also setting up the Buu arc to come.

It's sad in a way... I'm working on issue 8 and I'm just now getting into the real meat of the story.

Update: Issue 10 is up! Volume 1 is complete!

I guess more about my favorite filler character, Bardock. I think that he got the small end of the stick on the whole TV special thing, dying and all. In my filler movie he has been restored to life by the Dragonballs and really gets to see all the time he has missed. He uses the Time Room in Kami's sanctuary to see most of Goku's childhood and some of his adulthood. It would be way more than what he actually saw in the special though. I would also have Goku meet his father on friendly terms and get a closer touch with his saiyajin side.

Wow. So many replies just since last night! Cool.

Anyhoo, some good ideas for storylines, "meanwhiles," and the like, and thanks for alerting me to the Yamcha doujinshi; it looks interesting (I'm reading it as I type this)

Anyhoo, here's a pair of my ideas for filler "episodes." They take place during my "Revised GT" project, back on Earth while Goku and company are out planet-hopping for the Dragonballs, and before Babi shows up...

(“Filler Episode” #1) - Goten is working up the nerve to propose to Valese, whom he has been dating for over two years (A little altered detail in my version). Marron and Bra take it upon themselves to help him pull it off. They enlist Kuririn to help them. Hilarity ensues, and Goten is (maybe) ultimately succesful.

(“Filler Episode” #2) – Gohan and Videl are both called out of town unexpectantly, leaving Uub (who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time) with the arduous, demanding task of… babysitting? Uub must watch after "Son __?__," Pan’s baby brother, for a full day. Uub, clueless on the subject, is forced to seek help from Piccolo and Dende, Mr. Satan, Vegeta, Tenshinhan, and Yamcha, all who are equally as clueless. Frantic insanity ensues. Eventually, Uub finds assistance and relief in Chi-Chi and 18…

Things like these were more what I was thinking of when I made the topic. Those individual little episodes that are more comedic, fun little "breaks," not really having anything to do with the main storyline. Like the infamous Driving School episode.

But whatevah!

Haha, yeah, I totally let that site die because to be honest I got sick and tired of all the scanning, sizing, and hosting. And at 10 pages a chapter that's a pain to do in one go! Not to mention the late nights spent drawing at a snail's pace of about 1 and a half hours per page! It was maddening!! That and I was just embarassed to let anyone see a comic I had started 4 years ago. Amazingly though, I actually got my motivation back yesterday and began a new chapter. It's a pretty annoying process but I did way too much planning for it to simply give it up. I guess I could host it in my scraps on deviantart like I did with the last chapter.

And yes, Aremke's comic is by far the most awesome and captivating (and well drawn!) DB fan comic that I have ever read. It doesn't even bother me that the story is a little darker than normal for Dragonball. It's so refreshing to see someone portray Yamucha as the kind of guy he really is, instead of as an ass.

1. A short filler arc set around Goku's training on the planet Yardrat; a few small adventures (and villians) based around him learning Instantanious Movement and how to transform into a Super Saiyan at will. By far that was one of my favorite parts of the game DBZ: Sagas.

2. A much longer filler arc prior to the 23rd Tenkaichi tournament, that would follow the individual training journeys of Goku, Kuririn, Tenshihan, Yamcha, Piccolo, and Chi-chi. They did a little of this already. but it seemed much too short and focused too much on Goku basically doing the same things.

3. Another large filler arc set between the end of the Cell saga and the start of the Boo saga, that would follow more of Goku's adventures in the after life, Kuririn pursuing and eventually marrying 18, and incorporate movie 9 into its continuity as well.

4. More episodes of the Great Saiyaman, introducing a new "super villian" for Gohan to face, without relying on his Super Saiyan powers. Maybe have that turn into the beginning of Saiyaman and SaiyaGirl partnership.

And that's all I can think of right now, although I'm sure there's room for all sorts of neat filler that doesn't bog down the story and fight scenes.

My filler would take place during the seven years prior to the Buu saga.

#18 and Kuririn have just got back from their honeymoon. After unpacking, they hear a knocking at the door.

It's Lunch (the blonde Lunch).

#18 and Lunch have an argument and a short fist-fight (with Kuririn trying to stop them). Roshi makes a suggestive comment about them attacking each other, and the girls attack Roshi head-on.

They laugh, have a drink, Lunch sneezes, and realizes she'll be late for her split-personality therapy. She leaves, never to be seen again.
I also go by "veemonjosh".
