Who's this guy?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Who's this guy?

Post by DaemonCorps » Mon Jun 19, 2006 8:25 pm

He can be seen next to Goku on page 119 of DB volume 3, wearing a shirt that I think says "Rudhuyasa" on the sleeve. He's drawn in slightly more detail than normal background people are drawn in Toriyama's work, so I'm assuming that he could be someone Toriyama knows.Either that, or it could be some kind of JP inside joke (like maybe a JP celebrity/TV icon).

You could think that I'm simply overanalyzing this, but you see the same guy again on page 161 of the same volume in the crowd and is (once again) looking over his shoulder as he was on page 119.

Does anyone have a clue who this guy is?

Saved it as extremely low-quality, but it gets the point across.

It's definitely Vegeta because he stepped on Goku's grandfather and destroyed the martial arts arena according to the dub!

My best guess is that it's a fan that entered a contest of some sort and was thrown in as a one-shot background character. But that's just me making stuff up.

I always excused him as being one of Toriyama's friends or assistants...

Wait what? They said that Vegeta did that in the dub?

In the original US dub, Gokuu said it was Vejita who crushed his grandpa when he saw Vejita transforming into a Oozaru. XD

Even though you're just making it up, that actually sounds like a pretty cool prize. I mean, to be immortalized in the manga itself like that would be badass. :P

Wait, are you guys making that up about goku thinking vegeta killed his grandpa, or was that just another of Funimation's lame attempts to make goku even more of an idiot?

If it was the former it's be funny, but sadly the truth is the latter.

Plus Bardok's a scientist too.

A brilliant scientist!

So brilliant that he thought he could take on Freeza on his own and tried to kill him with such a small energy blast.

... Okay, can we pull this back on topic? If you guys really want to discuss the total wrong-ness of the original American dub, then make a new thread about it, because my question's been driving me bonkers ever since I noticed it :x.

I noticed the obscurity of this guy a long time ago myself. He sticks out so much that he's obviously there for more of a reason than just to be part of the crowd. I always figured he was some kid who won a contest or something, just as Mystic Kami suggested. It's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks so :)

Ol' "Rudhiyasa" also shows up in the same exact shot in the anime, so if he actually was a contest winner, what a lucky bee-stard!
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Eh, I guess the whole contest winner thing is the best thing we've got. Personally, I originally thought that it was Toriyama's editor. From the other picture that I mentioned of the same guy (on the other page), it looks like Toriyama was working with just one picture, because the guy is in the same position in both pics.
