It seems that rather few people watched Dragonball (or at least the first season which is all we had at the time) and then started watching Z at the first episode.
The reason I bring this up, is I still remember catching the first episode of Z. I remember not knowing what the show was for a bit and then thinking 'hey this reminds me of that DragonBall show' and then 'Hey that kid's got a tail just like... like... what was his na-' "hey Goku" 'Holy shit! Is this the show? what happened? who's the big guy holding Goku?' "Hey guys, this is Gohan, my son" 'Hot cow balls, Goku's grown up? With child? Who's that bald guy?'
Soon after I as confused further by who Ten and Piccolo were - but I was more focused on 'What? Space?! What? Did he just fly? Holy shit he blew up a car!'
At the time I didn't know jack about DragonBall so I had to pick things up as I watched ('Piccolo doesn't seem to like Goku') which work alright, but wasn't perfect ('Perhaps Goku owes him some money').
Then as I grew more knowledgeable on the series I thought about what the best way to introduce someone else to the series. Others suggested an episode of the Cell games, or something in the Buu saga. But they also warned against showing anything that would ruin the surprises, like Trunks' arrival.
Then I thought, what about the biggest surprise in the series: Goku's a goddamn alien?!
So, here's the big topic, what are your thoughts on the first episode? What order did you watch the series in? What do you think about the need for people to experience the shock of 'Goku's an alien'? That is, do you think it's better for people to watch DragonBall and then see Z to get the full effect?
