Fanart/Writing and Fancharacter Discussion Sections?

Post by KinoFourpaws » Wed Sep 13, 2006 4:55 am

Ok, I've got a couple of questions to ask you guys about this forum. If I'm posting this topic in the wrong place, I'm sorry; it'd be helpful if someone pointed me to the correct area to put this. I'm still new here...

The first thing I've noticed since joining this forum is, in the available boards, the only art board I've seen is for AMVs. I was wondering if there was a section designated for other fanworks, like fanart and fanfiction. You know, where we can post our DBZ stuff (or links to it, if it's a problem with bandwidth to put up lots of pictures or text documents) for critiques and such? I realize this is a discussion forum and not a site like, say, deviantART, but I would think that this would be a really good place to get helpful responses about our stuff (as opposed to comments like "this pic pwns ass" or "this sux" like what lots of dA artists like to say on people's works).

And while we're on the subject, I was also wondering if there's a specific section in this forum where we can talk about fancharacters and such? You know, where we can test them out (not neccesarily RP, but show profiles and share information on them with people), get feedback from other users as to what looks good about them, what we need to work on, whether they're too flat or uninteresting/cliche, etc. I don't know if you guys allow this, considering the forum's more focused on the series and not the fanworks it's spawned, but if there is a specific section for this stuff, I'd like to know where it is. You know, so I don't end up posting in the wrong area entirely... >__>

I feel like a tremendous idiot for asking all this, and I probably deserve a good kick for doing so, but I really feel I need to know... o___o;;

If anybody can answer my questions and give me some explanation as to how things work in this forum, and as to why the things I've just asked about might not be allowed, it'd be a great help. Thanks.
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

Having a fan-work section seems like a good idea, but I think it'll just invite a lot of 'look at my gokuzzz' spam. I'd really like the idea, and wish it were feasible, but I don't think Mike has the time to moderate such discussions.

This question has been brought up a couple of times and Mike has made it clear he will never have such sections on the forum. For the reason Desire already stated as well as he has said that he personally has no interest in nor desire to participate in that area of DB fandom.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

As numerous others have already explained, there is not and will likely NEVER be an outright section for fanworks here.

However, our good moderators VegettoEX (Mike) and SaiyaJedi (Julian) have sometimes ignored their own discomfort and allowed the occasional thread concerning such things to exist (though I'm not sure why). Some of these threads are still current, so I don't think there would be a problem posting and/or discussing fanart and fanfiction within those SPECIFIC areas.

So here comes Li'l Lemmy with some helpful links! Here's a brief history:

CURRENT: Veshira has started a discussion about fanworks and the ideas behind them. What are you into when it comes to creative DBZ? It's discussion only, so don't mistake this for a fanart gallery.

CURRENT: Initiated by The S, this thread is actually about posting your fanart. I'm guessing VegettoEX hasn't eliminated it because it manages to adhere to the topic, so for the moment this is propably a good place to show off your own art.

INACTIVE: Read and/or comment on Bejita's excellent Fan Manga, which has been in development for more than a year. Because it's a work in progress, I'm not sure whether throwing in your two cents will count as necroposting; something which we definitely try to avoid . . . so VegettoEX or Bejita, perhaps one of you could clarify that.

INACTIVE: Also, there's Leotaku's art gallery. He isn't currently taking requests, but there's no reason you can't enjoy what's already there. If you're tired of the usual copycat-style fanart, Leotaku's work has a phenomenal un-Toriyama look that has to be seen to be believed.

FINISHED: Earlier this year we had SSj Kaboom's Quick Character Creation Contest, which was best described as a brainstorming session. The contest is over, but there's some discussion relating to fan characters and even some sketches you can browse through. (Son Gosan is too cute.)

There are opportunities to be creative, but don't mistake all this for free license to flood the board with such things . . . because in general, fanworks simply aren't something the moderators are interested in monitoring. The only actual fanworks section to exist is the DaizenshuuEX Randomness Boards, a separate forum which is almost completely dedicated to that sort of thing. I'm not sure if it's still popular or not, though.

And that'll do it!

This also seems like a good time to remind people about the officialy-unofficial side boards The Random Boards which everyone seems to have forgotten about and practically stopped posting on....

Though, they do appear to be down at the moment. -_-

Thanks Li'l Lemmy, yes on occassion Vegetto EX has allowed a topic to run, but mine's an old topic, so if there's anything to be said or want to comment on it a PM would be the appropriate way. The chapters had their topics in their time, and slowly died out, so there wouldn't be the need to re-activate them.

I'll be sure to put any new chapters here first!

Wow, I didn't know about that forums. But it looks pretty dead. And...it's not as pretty as this one! Also, I don't really like boards that have too much forum categories...it's hard to check all of them. ~_~

That's why you don't check them all, just the ones that interest you. :P

And ya, it is kinda dead. I don't know what happened, really. I mean, it was as acitive, if not more so, than these boards back when I made the thing. I've been trying to get it kick started again but... I don't know, it doesn't seem to be working. :/

So sad, how quiet it is there. I wish that would change . . . we're all to blame in that regard, Xvex.

I remember last year I was really psyched about the Randomness boards, because I wanted to tap into a fanfic community that was on the same level of intelligence as the regular board. I was so happy to have found it. It was a lot of fun, with a lot of great talent.

I even posted the prologue to Sins of the Father to see if I could get an opinion before posting the rest of it. But ya know . . . I never got a response! Not one! It must've really sucked or otherwise went unnoticed, and I guess it kinda killed the thrill for me. (Translation: I need attention! Wah wah!) Somehow I just never posted again.

So these days I just keep my fics to myself, unfortunately . . . not to mention that I'm involved with non-DBZ projects that wouldn't do for the Randomness boards, anyway. Hmm. Maybe I can post my art there when I buy a new scanner, though . . .

I remember seeing that. I opened it a couple of times to read it but never managed to find the time to give it a proper once over. And then eventually it got old enough I didn't think it'd be worth responding to it.

Well, that's the advantage of the Randomboards. They're not limited to just DBZ. Really, the only restriction that exists, currently, is nothing X rated. And that's because I just haven't seen a demand for creating such an area yet. :P

Eh? I did not know that. Uh, wow . . . huh. Not just DBZ? And the whole board is going unused, you say? Because now it feels like a serious waste. Gee, do you think we could promote the Randomness somehow through some sort of contest, like VegettoEX does for the site itself?

I've thought of doing that. The standing problems are:

1) Nothing to give away.
2) No means of getting anything to give away.
3) No means of giving away anything (I'm broke, can't even pay shipping on the prize :? ).

But, if others are willing to remedy those issues, that's awesome, and makes it more doable.

Really, I don't understand why they've fallen into such disuse. Can't even blame it on the (old but to most since they've not been there) recent upgrade that requires everyone who was already registered to re-confirm their account since they stopped before that. I mean, I even see people asking about more sections and stuff here still.

You know, this conversation seems like it'd be great thing to have on Randomness. Y'know, a nice "this place still exists, start posting again" thread?

Just sayin' (haha, dub joke). :)

Well, see, that wouldn't work. People would actually have to go there to see the thread. Ya' know? That's the catch22 with that idea.

Okay, so here's what we do.

HEY! All you people who keep whining for a fanworks section! I've made a thread over at the other board! A thread!! Come join the Randomness and see! Talk to me, you bastards!

Heh, well I shared some fanworks if it helps get the randomness alive. I don't think many would like it though... I'm too much of a sucker for the canon pairings, and a hopeless romantic to the bone. ~_~; I've seen some requests for comedy fics (and I myself like reading them) but comedy is difficult to write, actually.

Hoo boy.

What happens when someone critiques someone's work and the work's owner gets his feelings hurt?
What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?
