Who's THIS cameo?

Post by Thanos6 » Wed Oct 04, 2006 3:58 am

I wish I had a scan...it's from manga volume 10, during the prelims of the 22nd Budokai. Right after Kuririn beats his first opponent, and right before Yamcha starts arguing with Tenshinhan, there's a guy in the crowd, astonished at Kuririn...

He's wearing a black hood, a white mask (sorta like Jason), a cape with a fancy fastener, and a big evil looking bat on his chest.

Is this supposed to be a cameo of anyone in particular (like the way Dorothy and some of her Oz friends were in the 21st Budokai crowd) or just a random background character with a more creative design?

It's the bottom panel of page 89 in the Viz release.

Well, I can't answer your question, but here's a scan of the guys:

While animal/human breeds are common in early DB, I do agree that the masked bat guy has some kind of history behind him.

He looks like a Power Ranger. Super Sentai maybe? :D The bat could be the same bat that mascots the Tenkaichi Budokai.
What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?

I don't think it's meant to be a cameo of anyone specific. It's just a sort of spoofy send-up to Batman.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Meta Knight from Kirby? Seriously, he has the same mask, a cape and he has bat-like wings while the afromented character has a bat on his chest. Furthermore, the Kirby franchise is VERY populair in Japan.

Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

Yeah, but it was created years later (1992).

That's actually an enemy from Dragon Quest. Toriyama hid them in there sometimes, especially during that Tenkaichi Budokai.

Ohhh! Now it's coming back to me. I may have a picture somewhere.....

Okay yeah! Here we go! I know it's a little different but close enough to know it's a Dragon Quest monster right? Haha, webcam pic.....

I love Toriyama's monster designs~<3

Or maybe he didn't want to have them there to avoid lawsuits? We've got a mystery here!

Heh, if that's the case, then an Orc is in that panel too. :P

Uly bastards, they both are.

Glad they lost in the tournament, I am.

Hope they die, I do.
