"Bardock" or "Burdock"?
So, is Goku's father's name "Bardock" or "Burdock"?
(é) Yeah, I'm famous. Super famous. I start things.

Daimao & Viz's translations use "Burdock", however when it's pronounced in the anime it sounds like "Bardock".

I wonder if it has anything to do with the long "ba-" at the beginning of his name. Wouldn't any elongated "a" be translated as "er"? That's pretty close to how we pronounce Burdock.Sebastian (SB) wrote:Daimao & Viz's translations use "Burdock", however when it's pronounced in the anime it sounds like "Bardock".
Edit- My fault here. I had just remember instances where elongated "a" could be translated as "ar" as well. So the mystery still remains...

well, how would one write "burdock" in katakana? Is it the same characters used for 'Bardock'?

I thought "burdock" was the actual name of the vegetable, and "Bardock" is the pun on it.

I'm asking because there's a disagrement over the article title on Wikipedia.SSj Kaboom wrote:I thought "burdock" was the actual name of the vegetable, and "Bardock" is the pun on it.

One guys said:
Can anyone verify that or a proper katakana of 'burdock'?In the Dragon Ball guide book "Dragon Ball Forever," Toriyama was asked about the characters and their names. Here's what he had to say about Burdock: "I don't remember him very well (this is understandable since he was only in two panels!). Was he in the original story? If so, his name would definitely come from the vegetable." (and then it says "(baadakku=gobou)" which is the Japanese word for burdock).

It's "ba-dakku", in kana.Sebastian (SB) wrote:when it's pronounced in the anime it sounds like "Bardock".

You can't? Er... Sorry, then.desirecampbell wrote:Arg! I can't see the image! :'(
Anyway, it's a Super Barcode Wars card, and it says "Barduck". And that works, in my opinion.
I don't think I've ever seen his name spelled in alphabet somewhere else, in Japan.

Yeah, Barduck. That's awesome. Any idea about how one would write burdock in katakana? (or kana, or whatever, I can never remember the names).

That would be "ba-dokku". Sometimes, it's "ba-dakku" (i.e. the way the "Dragon Ball" character's name is spelled in kana), but it's far less common, as far as I can tell. And in general, they'd use the Japanese word ("gobô") anyway.desirecampbell wrote:Any idea about how one would write burdock in katakana?
When in doubt, you can just say "kana".(or kana, or whatever, I can never remember the names).

As already mentioned, the Kana name is "Baadaku", or バーダク, which could be the pronunciation of either "Bardock" or "Burdock". I've always thought his name was MEANT to be Bardock, though, because if it were straight-up the name of the ACTUAL vegetable it wouldn't be a PUN...afterall, Gokou isn't simply "Karotto" nor Nappa "Napa", they're all slightly altered to become puns.
I think it's supposed to be Bardock, because Burdock isn't a PUN name, it's just the name of a vegetable. XD

Well, this thread kind of descended into a translation discussion. Perhaps the discussion should head there? I've already said a bunch of stuff about Burdack (as I call him, begrudgingly) that's probably wrong, but I've said it anyway.
