Super DBZ for the PS2 - Voted worst game of the year???

Post by _Jrinu_ » Sat Apr 21, 2007 10:24 pm

No, that topic subject is not a typo. Believe it or not gamepro voted Super DBZ as their number one for "Worst game of 2006"

Now, I was under the impression that super DBZ was selling well in America, but I guess people really didn't like it...

"You hate me, you really hate me!" Readers are such a fickle bunch. Behold as their choices for second and third Best fighting game were also their first and second choices for worst game of the year. However, the Playstation 3 launch title (and exclusive) Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire earned enough votes to rank third. With two games based on anime despised so much, could we detect a trend? And don't feel so too bad, Super DBZ: last year Tekken 5 won third best fighting game; nevertheless , it was voted the second most hated-game of 2005 by the same readers.

Yep, Super DBZ was also voted third best fighting game of the year. These people do not know how to vote.

I am so confused by this, I never once heard anything negative said about the game on any kind of large scale. This is really coming out of nowhere for me.
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

There's the people who like DbZ games, there's the people who know decent games, regardless of license, when they see one, and then there's idiotic buttmunches who just go "lol dzb is the suxxorz" and automatically vote against the game. Unfortunately, it would seem a lot of the said retards in that third category somehow managed to fire up enough neurons to vote in the poll.

That is totally wrong. Not only did I hear it had an excellent fighting engine any fighting fan would enjoy (I haven't had a chance to play SDBZ yet), but there were so many worse games that came out last year.

Wait what? Those were the games they picked for worse game of the year? There are far FAR worse games they could have put up there like any particular "Thats So Raven" game or "Cars" for GBA...

They didnt have to pick popular game. :? Did they really like "Lets Ride Sunshine Stables" for GBA over "Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire" for PS3?

This is why I haven't subscribed to gaming magazines since 1996.

I never thought there'd be a day where 4.5/5 games were rated 'Worst of the Year'.

Shame on you Gamepro. =P

EDIT: Now that I've taken a look at the scan a bit further more, I can say this is probably not the magazine or the reviewer's faults themselves. It's the annual Reader's Choice Awards or something like that (Held every April, now that I remember). People vote in certain games in categories on the website (or mail it. Dunno how they nominate them).

Yep. These are readers' choices. If it makes anyone feel better, the editors' choices did not include Super DBZ. :p

Seriously now, a good majority of those people probably haven't played Super DBZ and have a completely biased vote in the matter.

"Oh I hate Dragonball Z, so that means the game sucks"

Some of my friends think Dragonball Z is the worst show ever made, but they probably wouldn't vote Super DBZ as the worst game of the year.

This is bizzare, i remember a article for SDBZ in Gamepro(the cover itself had DBZ characters on it, the one i read included Freeza and Cell) and the editors and staff seemed to be excited for the game( the game was not released at the time)

Bah. Gamepro still blows anyway. They do huge articles on DBZ just to blatantlytry to look cool. Then when anybody points out any inaccuracies in the article, they ridicule them.

This is why the only magazine I subscribe to is Tips & Tricks.

You know why they voted it worst game? They are mad because it's so good. People hate it when things that are supposed to be lame, etc. turn out to be good. They think anime games suck, and when a good one comes along, they get mad. :?

I only use reviews to gauge things. I never use them to determine that atleast some people enjoyed it. I never use it for anime or lisenced games. These games are already predetermined to be bad.

And it doesn't surprised me that average gamers don't like it. Everywhere else I go it gets dumped on. Kids today can't appreciate a decent old-school styled fighting game.

Anybody who thinks Super DBZ is worse than Gundam: Crossfire needs a lobotomy. Or needs to play the games. I've only played both for a brief period of time, and believe me, I LOVES my Gundam...but Crossfire was an abonimation....

I don't hate Super DBZ or anything, and I don't think it deserved WORST game of the year, but I can see why people wouldn't like it.

Of all these 3D DragonBall Z games, Super DBZ felt the least like, well, DBZ. Basically, it was a well-done arcade fighter with DragonBall characters pasted onto the engine. When I step into the virtual shoes of Goku, I want to feel like I'm really getting in there and fighting like Goku would fight and Super DBZ just lacked that authentic DBZ feel. Again, not a bad fighting game by any means, just a bad DBZ game. And when the title screams "DragonBall Z" at you, what are you supposed to expect?

Also, the sound in Super DBZ was some of the worst I've heard in any game. Everything sounded muffled as hell and it was just a pain to listen to.

Hope that sheds some light on maybe why it got Third Best Fighter and Worst Game.

Personally, from someone like myself who is a much bigger fan of the manga than the anime, I think that Super DBZ really reflects the manga well. When I compare the manga and anime side-by-side the manga is obviously much more quickly paced.

That quick pace is reflected upon in Super DBZ. It also reflects on my inability to sit and play super in-depth games that take forever to get through the story. I can get through the Story/Arcade mode in Super DBZ in one quick sitting and get my fix for the day before going off to do something else.

That, and I like the fact that each character is very unique.

There's only a few things that weren't in Super DBZ that I wish was in it (such as Player vs. Com versus matches and Japanese audio) but overall the game is packed with a lot of things I do like so I can forgive the few shortcomings.
