The Arrival (VHS) "Action Version" Found?

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Thu May 31, 2007 7:01 pm

First off: If you have no idea what I am talking about, it would probably be a good idea to read through some of this...

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5315

Ok, so since February I have been looking for this "Action" version of the Arrival video. I knew I had this when I was younger, I remember very well hearing "Death", "Die", "Kill" and all that stuff in these episodes on VHS but never on TV. So like the good little nerd Iam I been searching E-bay and Amazon Marketplace. Then one day in May...

I found it! Well... to be honest I can't say I have officially found it because when I popped this tape in all I got was static, I tried tracking and all that stuff but nothing worked. I was pretty pissed, I tried it in two VCR's and nothing. So even though this is the alternate cover shown in some early Pioneer DVD's under the name "Action Version" I cannot officially say it.

I will however show you some interesting scans from the back of the video...

Image

I had to write what it said on the bottom of it because the cover is made of reflective gold paper, so it dosent scan well. So as you can see there are some oddities, especially when compared to the arrival on DVD...

Image

The DVD version was drastically different from the VHS version. Its almost 99% re-written. The line scanned above is probley the only line that even came close to the VHS's version.

Some more things I found was that the VHS says "DragonBall Z Toys Available From Bandai" while the DVD says "Dragonball Z Toys Available From Irwin". Also the DVD says its for ages 3 and up and the VHS says its for ages 5 and up, which I thought was pretty stupid.

So anyway, if anyone out there has the arrival on VHS (the "Goku shooting a Kamehameha" cover) I would love for you to see if the back is the same as this one. I don't have the Goku cover, so I can't compare it.

So there you have it. Iam sorry, I really couldn't give much proof to say an action version was made, but this will probley be the closest we will ever get. I don't know if Iam going to keep looking for this... I probley will casually though.

Cool find. It definately looks like the "action version" that was discussed on the podcast a few weeks back.

Nice. I would've thought you just forgot about the whole thing, so I was pretty surprised when I saw this topic listed.

Why does it say Funimation on the back of the cover? Did they even have the series at the time? :?

Pioneer didn't dub the show, they just took care of the home video distribution.

FUNimation did have the series at the time, they've had it since 1994/95. Back then, they handled the licensing and receiving of masters from Toei and as we know; had Ocean dub it, Pioneer distribute the video format, and Saban handle television syndicating with influence in censorship guidelines and music. It's understanding how it can be so confusing, it seems like every company and their brother had DBZ back then.

Well Tanooki, I dragged out my fancy gold VHS copy of Arrival(good thing I've kept it wrapped up). The one with Goku shooting the Kamehameha and the back is the same as yours. The only difference is that mine also says "ADVANTAGE Video Inc." in between the Funimation Productions Inc. logo and the In Association With Bandai Entertainment blurb. That could perhaps be that mine's one distributed in Canada. I even have the "DragonBall Z Toys Available From Bandai" thing too. I would scan for comparison pictures, but unfortunately my scanner broke a couple of weeks back. But I hope that helps a little. :)

Tanook, I've got the VHS of 'Arrival' with the cover of Goku shooting a Kamehameha, and yes, the description on the back is exactly the same. I don't have a scanner, but I'll install my webcam to take a few pics to confirm =].
