Piccolo's fingers

There was something that kinda got me all curious. In the manga, he clearly has 4 fingers on his hands while he has 5 in the anime. Why did Toei make such a goof-up on Piccolo's fingers?

Old story. They just goofed the first time and remained consistent.

Hey, Toriyama goofed too. He is drawn with five fingers on page 154 in volume 13 of Dragon Ball, when he holds up five fingers to tell Goku that the fight will be finished within 5 seconds. The VIZ editor, possibly the Japanese editor too, even humorously notes that he grew an extra finger below the panel.

Perhaps they just like characters to have five fingers in the anime. Other characters like Cell's first form and some of Buu's forms only had two or three fingers in the manga but had five in the anime.

That wasn't a "goof" either, that was a joke.

That wasn't Viz nor the Japanese editor. That was Toriyama.

If by "they", you mean "Fuji TV", yes, they liked characters to have five fingers. Or rather, they didn't want characters to have less than five fingers.

They were afraid that some child may go to certain lengths to be more like their favorite characters.

wasn't there an "Ask Vegetto EX" about this? They changed a lot of character designs to a regular hand to make it easier on the animators - apparently it's harder to remenber who has three fingers, or four fingers, or a mitten hand, or a "penguin" hand.

I doubt that. Was that speculation, or did they have some kind of confirmation that's what went on?

Just don't even think about it. Piccolo is from Namek. At times he rips one of his fingers off just for mere pleasure, and then he grows them back when he wants to.

You know that one chapter title page or something from the manga, where Cell is standing in the middle, and a few of the other characters around him are flipping him off?

Toriyama should have had Piccolo looking at his hand, confused as to which of his four fingers to put up.

I always just assumed that it was changed so the animators wouldn't have to remember who had four and who had five.

I believe it was stated in an interview with someone that Piccolo and Cell and so on were given 5 fingers in the anime to make it easier on the animators. If everyone's got 5 fingers then they don't have to keep track of "did I give him the right number of fingers?" and can just draw the hand.

Remenber? Was that an intentional reference to a DBZ Engrish?

Maybe it's like how in the Bleach manga Ganju's sister only has one arm, but in the anime she wears a prosthetic? Or would that be along the same lines?

Also, on panel 1 of page 155, he has 4 fingers again.
On Panel 3 he has five...
Then he has three again...
