Things you never want to happen to Dragon Ball

Post by Chuquita » Sat Jul 07, 2007 3:14 am

I just read on DeviantArt that Shippuuden's newest ending is an AU where all the characters are in high school.

I went to watch the actual animation of it and could not purge my brain of all the horrific fanfic summaries I've seen over the years of dbz characters in high school AU's. @___@

What kinds of things do you never want to see Toei or Funi decide to do with the franchise?
Besides the obvious "widescreen" and "partial redubbing" junk.
On hiatus.

NO. RAP. MUSIC.

I'm cool with rap, but it doesn't fit DragonBall, and I'd be against the decision if either FUNi or Toei did it.

Oh yeah, and NO YAOI.

I don't like the days worth of filler in the show. I mean, someone on youtube managed to cut down an entire episode to six minuets, making it go like the manga...

I hope that FUNi doesn't actually try to add to this with the uncut footage release, or add an option or something. Like when Frieza talks in his native tounge, I'm pretty sure that was never there.

A lot of what I didn't want to happen to Dragon Ball already did....(GT rap music, unnecessary censoring, etc.)

As a lover of all kinds of music (and rap is actually one of my favourite genres) I must protest this. I'm not saying 'rap + DBZ = the win', but it could be done well. In fact this pleases me very much (despite not knowing most of what's being said). This is, of course, assuming the song is actually about DragonBall, and not some bastardization of the concept involving "klondike bars, and blond dykes".
- - - side question: anyone want to take a crack at transcribing and translating that Spanish rap for us?

That was perhaps the greatist Dragon Ball mix I have ever heard. That's the way it's meant to be seen!

Stemming off just watching the latest Shippuden closing, I would definitely not want some kind of alternate dragon ball related series that completely ignores the continuity of everything for the sake of making all the characters either babies or teenagers and pitting them in baby or teenager situations. This is more of something that has happened to American shows (ie Looney Tunes spawning Tiny Tunes and later on Baby Looney Tunes), but with Japanese culture borrowing concepts from the West (anyone remember SD Gundam?), this wouldn't be a complete impossibility.

Sure, it would be nice to see the franchise given some attention, but not to the point that they're willing to give in to the mainstream. To give another example, it's kinda like how Lunatics Unleashed was the Looney Tunes response to all these action series.

I would probably like it if only to see the new character designs. Then again, that's what fan art is for.

Well the one thing I hope Toei NEVER do is a cross epech. "I Can't find the Dragon Ball! Goku meets the Sailor Scouts!". I can see visions of Toei sitting round thinking to themselves, "why not combine the best shows we own? I mean do people really want to see a One Piece and Dragon Ball crossover?!".
Other than that, judging by the adverts they've used it Japan, I think they've more or less covered every angle.

Funny that you mentioned that... I believe Toei are thinking of animating that OP/DBZ-crossover from Shonen Jump if the fans want it.

Yeah, aside from the 'Cross Epoch" done by Toriyama & Oda. There has been at least 2 Dragon Ball & One Piece crossovers. Both of which were done for a festival in Japan. The first one Goku, Luffy, & Pals meet up with Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) to defeat Freeza & Arlong in order to save Tokyo. Granted it wasn't so great. The second one, however, was pretty good. Goku & Luffy duke it out with Enel.

I wouldn't want a new movie or revamp series to replace all the seiyuu or use crappy different music like the Slump revamp does. Aside from understandable replacements like Tien's VA, it would just be way too different; Nozawa-san and the rest of them are the heart and soul of the anime. I'm also in agreement about not doing a high-school type project. While I loved the Great Saiyaman episodes because they were basically perfect in comedy and were involved in the series' story (establishing Gohan meting Videl, taking up the mantel of Saiyaman for his tournament disguise, etc.), anything "new" of that sort done in a fanfic AU style would probably irk me the wrong way. I know that I do want a Cross Epech OVA or movie, simply because it'd originate from Toriyama and Oda's own work and be fucking awesome animated with the seiyuu from each series. Heck, with FUNi having both anime licenses, a R1 release seems very possible.

Oh, and in agreement about...no rap music!

You beat me to it. :) I can't stand the thought.

On the Rap subject. I can't see rap or any type of mainstream music being used for Dragonball or Z because it just doesn't fit. The music they made was specifically for the show. Mainstream music doesn't fit the tone of the series whatsoever.
