Season Set Flaws - GET OVER IT!!!
Season Set Flaws - GET OVER IT!!!
I've noticed how all people do about the Season sets is complain, and only sho pictures from the set that make it look bad, such as split-second glitches. Really, if you like DBZ for the story, then what's the point in making a big deal about some of the issues in the set. I watch DBZ because it has a good story, and I'll continue to buy the season sets. You know why, because it's Dragon ball Z, and I know it's a good show. I'm not buying it for video quality, or anything like that.
And then, the letterbox issue, what's the point in complaining? Sure, there is the occasional weird shot (i.e Gohan talking and you can't see his mouth), but it doesn't take out important footage. Really, what's the point in complaining about the not seeing some of Vegeta's insane hair, or a table in a scene at the Kame house? It's really no big deal. I guess I was too into the story to really be bothered by the cropping.
And really, what would you rather do: buy the Season 1 and 2 sets for 60 bucks, or fork over nearly 20 times that amount of money just so you can get something with good looking video quality and have all the footage, there, despite it being in a language you don't understand, without subtitles?

"The way it was meant to be seen"
With heads cut off, and terrible 'remastering'.
Noone is bringing up anything false. Every gripe anyone brings up about the season sets is absolutely true. If _you_ don't like it, toss off. Noone's forcing you to read it or respond to it. What are you going to do? Change our minds? We show you how terrible it looks, and you say "I don't mind". Well we mind. We think it's fucking terrible. We can back up our opinions with facts. You can't.

1. DBZ's TV series was never meant to be seen in widescreen as made apparent by the cropping.
2. The fullscreen releases cannot be purchased in their entirety in R1 format.
3. It's like saying there's nothing wrong with a fullscreen version of a 2:35:1 movie even though half the screen is cropped to fit your TV even though you're missing important footage. Same with DBZ as, since it was made for fullscreen the important footage is toward the top, middle, and bottom, and not the sides.
It's about OAR and not losing important footage in exchange for unimportant footage that was never meant to be seen.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Here's a question: What's more important - the story, or useless footage. I care more about the story than footage.

Um, what? That's the point. "This scene looks terrible in the season set because of something Funi did." And then we're supposed to post pictures of something else? What do you expect us to do? "They cut off Kiwi's head, and here's a screenshot of Bubbles." What the fuck, man?I've noticed how all people do about the Season sets is complain, and only sho pictures from the set that make it look bad,
Frame damage, minor fuss issues, and the like - yes, they are only on screen for a split second - at a time. They re-occur frequently.such as split-second glitches.
Furthermore - we were told the footage was "the original Japanese masters" and that it went through a "frame by frame remastering". We assumed such things would have been eliminated.
We like the parts of the story that include the fucking visuals. Like when the story is supposed to show something, not with dialog, but with pictures. Novels don't usually need images to tell the story - cartoons do.Really, if you like DBZ for the story, then what's the point in making a big deal about some of the issues in the set.
Obviously. We figured that out. The seasons sets have terrible visuals - that's the point. We were lied to. Funi said it would be great, and they made it look terrible. The rest of us want DBZ to look good.I watch DBZ because it has a good story, and I'll continue to buy the season sets. You know why, because it's Dragon ball Z, and I know it's a good show. I'm not buying it for video quality, or anything like that.
"The way it was meant to be seen" does not mean "we cut off the top and bottom for nine year olds". The main point is that we assume that when someone releases a television show, they aren't going to crop it. Is that so much to ask?And then, the letterbox issue, what's the point in complaining?
Theres the other thing too. When they first brought up the widescreen issue, Funi didn't say 'cropped' they tried to pass it off as 'widened'. They still push the fact that they added more image to the sides. What's so great about seeing the left half of Oolong's face? Not much, since it was never intended to be seen. Things like Kiwi's head, for instance, were meant to be visible - but now aren't.Sure, there is the occasional weird shot (i.e Gohan talking and you can't see his mouth), but it doesn't take out important footage. Really, what's the point in complaining about the not seeing some of Vegeta's insane hair, or a table in a scene at the Kame house?
We would rather Funi have released the season sets without cropping and without remastering. Our gripe is that they said it would be 'the way it was meant to be seen' and 'original Japanese masters' and would have 'frame by frame remastering'. We received none of that. We got a third of the screen blacked out, shitty late generation film copies, and an automated blur-color-correction.And really, what would you rather do: buy the Season 1 and 2 sets for 60 bucks, or fork over nearly 20 times that amount of money just so you can get something with good looking video quality and have all the footage, there, despite it being in a language you don't understand, without subtitles?
We complain be cause we were lied to. We were told we would be getting the best release ever, and we got shit on. The visuals might not be important to you, and that's fine, but they are important to many of us. Noone's saying you're a bad fan for buying them (except ETC123), we're just saying that you're have to be retarded to ignore the galring failures in the set, and the blatant lies we were told about it.

You're exactly the type of demographic that FUNimation has always targeted to; people that don't care about things like accuracy or high-quality products, just as long as they get to see something "cool" or whatever. These sets aren't meant for those of us that do care about quality and upholding artistic vision. They're far too flawed for any of us to find acceptable.jjgp1112 wrote:Actually, thinking that cropping isn't a big deal doesn't really require facts. Ah, I'd forgotten that other quote: "A nine year old is born every minute".Dark Vegeta-Sama wrote:You're exactly the type of demographic that FUNimation has always targeted to; people that don't care about things like accuracy or high-quality products, just as long as they get to see something "cool" or whatever. Oh, JJGP, in case you missed it, I'd been using actual quotes from Funimation to show that we were mislead and, now, insulted. You like the season sets, fine, you a "nine year old" in Funi's eyes - we on't really care about you. But don't try to tell us we're doing bad fans, or are doing something wrong by complain about being insulted and lied to repeatedly.
I'm just fucking sick of JJGP and ETC123. "The sets are great - if you don't like then you're a bad fan". "The sets are terrible, if you like them you're a bad fan". Fuck the fuck off. The sets are what they are. You want to complain about them? Fine. You want to complain about being lied to by Funi? Fine. You want to complain about the widescreen? Fine. You want to complain about people not liking the widescreen? Fine. Noone's a "bad fan".Vekurotto wrote:But what desirecampbell says is the [blatant] truth but people don't want to believe and pretend it doesn't exist, like peek-a-boo or shit like that.
Do what you want, but don't ignore the truth, and leave everyone else's fandom alone.

*Sigh*
Another thread about the Remastered Sets, another few people banned from mindless arguments. Can't we all just talk about the show that we all love instead of making arguments? This is NOT a forum for arguments. It's for Dragonball.

Well said. And I absolutely agree. A true fan of the series should respect the artists' hard work enough to demand nothing less than a perfect convertion (see Dragonboxes).Dark Vegeta-Sama wrote:These sets aren't meant for those of us that do care about quality and upholding artistic vision. Well, it's DB-related and far from mindless. I think one, maybe two people have been banned from this subject total.SuperSaiyan3Goku wrote:*Sigh*

Someone else (Mike, maybe?) has mentioned this recently, but I'll repeat it here. People don't like hearing negative things about things they like. And this particular thread comes off as, "I like the season sets and I wish people would stop saying bad things about it."
While some forums might be giant circle jerks where everyone agrees on everything, here, people are welcome to their opinions. (In theory, at least.) Just because someone has a different opinion that you don't like doesn't mean they should shut up. If it really bothers you, you could always, I don't know, ignore it? People here say plenty of things I don't particularly like or agree with, but I don't let it get to me. Plus, there's only a handful of people that really should be hushing people here, anyway.
Some other things I want to point out:
Plus, it's also flawed to say "a language you don't understand" without polling every member of this forum. I know there are plenty of people who are at least attempting to study it, if not already near fluent.
But really, "useless" is not an unbiased way of describing a choice. Footage being gone is a fact, but your opinion is not; not everyone considers the missing footage "useless." It's just not a fair question.

Now, see, this is a really unfair comparison. The R2 singles for episodes 1-74 do not cost anywhere near that much. It's more like ~$420, which is only seven times that much. You seem to be talking about the price of one of the Dragon Boxes, which has far more content than those two sets of FUNi's do.And really, what would you rather do: buy the Season 1 and 2 sets for 60 bucks, or fork over nearly 20 times that amount of money just so you can get something with good looking video quality and have all the footage, there, despite it being in a language you don't understand, without subtitles?

If all you want is the story and don't care about footage, you could always try reading the manga. I'm sure it's even cheaper than the season sets in the end, too. Here's a question: What's more important - the story, or useless footage. I care more about the story than footage.

Hey, great news everybody! Now you don't have to buy the Season sets or the Dragon Boxes, because I've got something even better!
I took it upon myself to render DBZ the way I think it should be seen! Screw the artist's perspective; this thing is the real deal!!!
I got my hands on some film masters off a Chinese bootlegger, dirt cheap... sure they may not have been direct from Japan, but they had to come out of Japan at some point!
Next I fed this all into my computer... I fine-tuned all of my video editor's processes to automate the colors, level, contrast, despeckling, noise reduction, and sharpening using default settings! Obviously. Cut down on like, 50% of the work!
After grabbing some coffee and doughnuts while this all took place, I came back to my monitor to see a nice, healthy "All Done" message prompt. I pressed OK... and was about to burn it straight to DVD when I noticed something.
THE SHAPE OF THE FOOTAGE DIDN'T MATCH THE SHAPE OF THE MINORITY OF HOUSEHOLD TELEVISIONS IN THE UNITED STATES.
I knew this wasn't too big of a problem, but hey, it's a show for kids, and kids reject anything that doesn't fall into place with the current trends. Now, many other dubbing companies may have stopped there, but I decided to future-proof this baby and put it into the widest, highest-fucking-definition possible.
Using a highly-advanced algorithm (Wide = cinematic and cinematic = good) I decided on a 369:1 aspect ratio. Granted, I had to chop away 99.6% of the resolution to achieve this, but none of that's really important; the story's still there.
Here's an exclusive screenshot:

It's Tenshinhan!
Don't worry if that black bars bother you—it's anamorphic.
You can expect these bad boys to hit shelves late November in sets of 12 (just in time for the Holidays!) for about 45 cents each. Enjoy, Dragon Ball Z fans!!!

That's the killer - I don't think we can win. Not completely.ETC123 wrote:Hey guy, get angry.
I decided I needed a life to live so I stopped caring.
Sorry if people got offended by the stuff, but I also don't care anymore, so I think it works out for everyone- others can fight for what they want, and I can build things out of lego and paint my room.
Winners?
Funi can't win completely because while they make lots of money, they still get a bad rap (though well deserved) from these decisions.
Those that settle for these sets don't win because while they might be okay with shitty video, it's as much of a 'win' as getting beat up a little in high school. You accept it and are complacent about it - but you still lose.
And the majority of us lose because while we can get the subs cheap from the season sets and get high quality video in the form of the R2s, it's a bitch and a half to get them together - and costs a friggin' mint.
The worst part is that Funi's not going to change its release plans. It doesn't matter what we do, what we tell them we want, they just do crazy retarded shit, like 'making the series widescreen'. Funi's reverted back to 1997-style thinking. And I can't be hopeful that we'll see a change before the end of the decade.
