Good episode-- I love the Manga Review of Awesomeness ^_^ I can't wait until you all get to the 22nd Budokai! That'll be great.
And I think that whole bit about the live-action movie should just be ignored. I wanted to cry when I read that. I showed it to a friend of mine who doesn't know all that much about the series (she's a semi-casual fan) and even she couldn't believe how wrong that stuff was. It's just pandering to the masses... *shudder* Ugh.
Oh, and one more thing: What about Meri's Top 5 List for the volume 9 manga panels? Was it in there and I just didn't catch it?

Eager to hear what you guys think of James Wong getting the L.A. movie. I don't think it'll turn out as bad as most everyone is expecting it to be. Cheesy? Yeah, probably. Terrible? Not likely.

Aw, so you guys are anti-DBZ movie? I agree that Dragon Ball itself is so out there that it could look strange if done in live-action, but movies have been constantly moving a bit further away from their comfort zone and delving into more "out there" stuff.
Awesome manga review (of awesomeness). And from the sounds of things, it sounds like Jeff is moving next door?

Oh, well then in that case...
:P
I mean, the word "school" gets tossed in once.
ONCE, and nothing beyond that, and everyone takes it as grounds for the movie being terrible. I dun' get it.

Well, it's not just that, but...I see it as taking the Pilaf saga and the Piccolo Daimao saga, squishing them together, and changing some stuff. I'm not sure about it right now-- there's just a lot of things up in the air. When there are some more confirmed details then my opinion might change. It just depends, I guess, but I'm not holding my breath...we'll see how things turn out, though.

I think the problem with the DBZ movie is that it's sure as hell not made for people who like DBZ. If it was made for such people they wouldn't change so much, so badly. So they're making a DBZ film for people who don't actually like DBZ... That's kind of worrying. Why not just make some quirky martial arts film not based on a pre-existing IP? The DBZ license won't attract anyone who doesn't already like DBZ and will only alienate most of those that do already like DBZ.
Anyway, thanks for the podcast - this is the first one that's come out while I've been a member of the forum though I've listened to numbers 1-10 and 95-97 since I joined. I'm sure I'll be back with some relevant comments after I listed to it. I seriously look forward to your podcasts more than I look forward to any currently running anime episodes coming out. I don't know what that says about me, but still...

With Jeff's mention of Slump humor, I'm surprised he didn't mention Grandpa Gohan's mask was just like a Dr. Slump character's.

Hey Mike, I bought the Great Saiyama Saga off Right Stuf also! That probably wasn't worth saying, but whatever.
Fortune Teller Baba definatly a good volume/arc. Really good fights and a nice little plot. I noticed something cool about Roshi and Baba that I'll bet isn't coincidence. Roshi lives on land in the middle of water; an island. Baba lives on water in the middle of land; an oasis. I think that parrelel (or opposite I guess) is what Toriyama was going for.
There's a really cool panel in that volume at the very beginning when the crew is waiting to meet up with Goku in which Yamcha pulls out his sword. I thought that was pretty cool even though he didn't get to fight with it, it's not very often since his first appearence that we see the sword.
Grampa Gohan showing up was simply fantastic. I loved the fight and I'm glad that Toriyama gave him the Kamehameha. The seen when he takes off his mask is very touching. I really like Gohan. If Toriyama somehow decided to draw a prequel series, I would much rather it be about him than Bardock/the saiyans.
I own the anime version. The atmosphere of it does drag a bit at some parts, but there is also some pretty cool filler like a brief history about Akuman.
Very entertaining as always, and once again I'm pumped for episode 100.

I haven't watched the anime of the Baba Saga in years, but I remember Akkuman's attack being called "The Devilmite Beam" in the dub. Guess they got it right. Never knew Mayumi Tanaka did Baba. (Pictures Laurie Steele as Baba...nah, Linda Young was great).

I actually like how Toriyama tends to avoid showing the characters in school (even though we know Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar all went) unless there's a plot relation (Saiyaman).
School can work but it's WAY too easy for an author to fall into the same ol' school cliche stories. :p
What bothers me most is exactly what Mike read on the podcast; Goku's "character description".
It makes me cringe to hear it. Just SO horrible.
File me under "I'll believe it when I see it's official movie website".
The Manga Review always makes me want to break out my own copies and read. X3
On hiatus.

Shit. If I didn't have to drop a hundred bucks Canadian (that's, like, a hundred and two dollars American) I would totally buy a ton on stuff from Rightstuf. Fucking DBZ movies at 5 bucks, DBZ UU singles at THREE bucks?!
Fuck!

Its not just that first profile. I actually made a video with my reaction the the rest of the profiles and the most unnessisary change was this.
An accomplished martial artist who trains Goku on the bow staff, he loves his grandson and is happy to prepare a special feast for him on his 18th birthday, as well as a special gift: a 3 star Dragon Ball.
That is just an unnessisary change of such an important item in the series.

Eek, sorry Mike, but I gotta disagree with the who pronunciation of Naruto. When you hear the incorrect pronunciation of Naruto you hear the emphasis on the second syllable "Ru" instead of emphasis on the first syllable "Na" from the correct pronunciation. It's not mispronounced, the emphasis is just put on the wrong syllable. Just seems almost the same as the "mistake" made with Goku's name to me.
Elitism is a very bad personality trait. I'd rather deal with an eager to learn moron than a mean-spirited, angsty piece of shit.

To me, a flat "Naruto" and "nuh - ROO - doh" are two completely different pronunciations, and I'm going to be stubborn about this until my soul leaves my body.

Haha, I do see where you're coming from actually. It may be the fact that I live in Alabama in which case whenever the two letters n and a appear together in a word it's automatically pronounced "nuh." Even I do it...damn my Southern accent.

The mention of the word "school" in the possible movie description makes me quiver with fear. Seriously, everything else that was said there, I can deal with and ignore, but Goku going to school is just wrong.
On a more relevant note, Goku's fight with the Mummy was longer in the anime but not really in a bad stretched out way. Though the I guess the manga version maked Goku seem tougher, perhaps Toei saw fit to make the Mummy a tougher opponent.
