Dragon Ball ratings in 2001-2002?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Dragon Ball ratings in 2001-2002?

Post by GokuSoul » Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:26 pm

I have heard a lot of times that Dragon Ball ratings in 2001-2002 were the best CN ever had but I never saw any proof or how good the ratings was. I know DBGT premiered with 9 million viewers but how many watched Dragon Ball at its peak?

Well, Toonami WAS showing all three DragonBalls at once, on weekdays, for a few months straight. Not sure when it was, so...

This is what it says on pg 23 in the booklet for my Dragon Ball Z Season 1 box set for September of 2002.
September - Dragon Ball Z Number One on all cable TV.
* Dragon Ball Z was the #1 program of the week on all cable television
with tweens 9-14, boys 9-14, and men 12-24.
* The Wednesday, Monday and Tuesday telecasts of Dragon Ball Z
ranked as the top 3 programs in all of television - broadcast or cable -
for delivery of boys 9-14. (The closest competitor was CBS' Survivor
Thailand.)

After the second dub season of DB premiered (early 2002, from the start of the Red Ribbon episodes up through the pirate cave stuff), I remember that Toonzone reported that Toonami's ratings had gone up considerably since those same dates in early 2001. They didn't actually specify Dragon Ball's ratings, but I also remember that those new episodes of DB were the only new things on Toonami at that particular point in time; all the other shows were in reruns. So it was easy to think that Dragon Ball was the reason for the ratings increase compared to the previous year, but it's not conclusive.

Other than that six year old hypothesis of mine, you might be able to find old ratings information on Toonzone or Anime News Network, or maybe even press releases on FUNimation's sites. You might have to check them via Archive.org to find information that old, though (especially the FUNi sites).
