Budokai 1 Question
I've recently played this game again. The last time I played this game I was dubby! I had just started watching Funimation's dub, around 2002. Just to explain, I moved to the US in August of 2000. I had already seen most of Dragonball and some of Z in Danish. The first thing I saw in English was Vegeta vs. Perfect Cell Rerun in late 2001.
To the point, naturally now I'm into the Japanese version. But this time when I play Budokai 1 I notice "The Legend of Hercule."
So my question is: In Budokai one/Dragonball Z 1 in Japan, is that feature called "The Legend of Mr.Satan?"

Ah, the name filter strikes yet again. But anyway, that feature is indeed known as the Legend of Mister Satan in the Japanese version of the game, or rather "LEGEND of Mister Satan", as they write it out right in English letters. Don't ask me why "legend" is in all caps.

Why are you so suprised they would call him Mr. Satan?
I really thought I remembered it being "The Legend of Hercule" though...

Well, the name H e r c u l e actually comes from the French dub. They didn't call him Satan at first because Piccolo was called Satan Petit Coeur (Satan Little Heart) in the French translation. But after a while they started to call him H e r c u l e Satan.Adamant wrote:It's also called Legend of Mr. Satan in the European versions, since they don't have to resort to the American dub sillyness.
The French dub wasn't done by a competent team (as most anime translations were in the mid-80s) and sometimes character's names would change between episodes or be mistranslated (Kame Sennin's sister was even called Bulma in an episode).

"Satan Little Heart"? Why did they call him that, of all things? Was the idea that he was like the Grinch, and has his heart two sizes too small or something?LaRésistance wrote:They didn't call him Satan at first because Piccolo was called Satan Petit Coeur (Satan Little Heart) in the French translation. The name has never been explained I believe. But I don't think it has anything to do with the Grinch as most French people were first exposed to the Grinch story when the Jim Carrey movie came out.Herms wrote:"Satan Little Heart"? I wasn't suggesting that is was a reference to the Grinch, just that "Little Heart" might be to suggest that his heart is under-sized and he is therefore a mean guy, similiar to how the Grinch is described.
Now that I think about it more, "Satan Little Heart" sounds a lot like the kind of name American Indians always have in Hollywood movies. Except for the "Satan" part.

Hmm...well, kaiousei is the Japanese word for Neptune, so there's sort of a vague link there, if you squint a little. I remember that in the English version of Legendary Super Warriors, Kaio's planet got called "Neptune" for that reason.

I have seen that too. Does Kaio's planet actually have a name?Herms wrote:Hmm...well, kaiousei is the Japanese word for Neptune, so there's sort of a vague link there, if you squint a little. No, it's always just called 界王星/kaiousei, which just means "Kaio's planet" or "Planet Kaio". Like I said earlier, kaiousei is also the Japanese word for Neptune, but written 海王星 ("sea-king planet").

Ok cool, there is only a small change in the writing.Herms wrote:No, it's always just called 界王星/kaiousei, which just means "Kaio's planet" or "Planet Kaio". Like I said earlier, kaiousei is also the Japanese word for Neptune, but written 海王星 ("sea-king planet").
Sorry, I though kaiosei was totally irreverent.

I suppose that may be why the "Sea King" monsters from One Piece are sometimes called "Neptunians."

It just means that he is evil (satan), but he has still care (mostly abouth gohan, therefore the small heart part). I hope this explanes it.LaRésistance wrote:The name has never been explained I believe. I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Reminds me of some old fansub scripts they had on Project Shinanome (sp?) that referred to Piccolo Daimao as "Piccolo the Devil". Of course, the really funny thing there is that what they called Piccolo Daimao would vary wildly between episodes, and sometimes over the course of the same episode.Kunzait_83 wrote:The whole Satan thing with the French dub I believe started with Daimao being called simply “Satan”. Which to be fair, is a more or less understandable misreading of the title “Great Demon King” (not that it makes it any less incorrect or anything).
