Episode #0156 (
download MP3) (
rss feed)
61:09; 64 kbps, mono; 27.9 MB
Episode #0156! VegettoEX and Meri bring on Hujio (Kanzentai) and godofchaos (The Fanboy Review) to talk about FUNimation's recent "DragonBall GT" boxset. It seems to be a complete shift from what they did with DBZ, but is it worth it? Lots of video talk and speculation, December's last release, and some e-mails round out the episode! Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to
godofchaos for hosting the rather sweet *one-hundred-fifty-six* episodes, now.
So there you have it, folks. We actually reviewed another FUNimation boxset. It's probably exactly what you expected to hear out of us... but then again, perhaps it's not.
w0rd.

I blame Barry Watson.
Basically, if I remember correctly, the hardcore thing was always his thing. Now that he no longer works at FUNimation, I think we're good.

Many of Funimation's recent trailers would disagree with you.

True, but alas they're trying to make a buck.
Alas...

I guess when Season 2 comes out, we'll have to say if the dub says "Hell" or "HFIL." I know Hell is used in the uncut dub, I have no idea if they used HFIL for the edited one, but if it was, we might have more than Hercule to bitch about.

*still listening to it currently*
I think it's worth pointing out, if I didn't already say this in the thread about the boxset itself. I asked Chris Bevins, who was one of the ADR directors for the show a bit later on, what the deal was with the rap. His answer was essentially that the rap was set in there before he even was brought on board the project, but "somebody thought it was a good idea" and it had to stick. That and after seeing the video with Barry Watson talking about the show which KaiserNeko linked to me, it's pretty obvious that he was the heralder of the whole "let's make it EXTREEEEME" bullshit that went on with GT specfically.
EDIT: What they said, my bad.
EDIT2: Also, funnily enough, this reminds me of the contest a while back regarding people singing the Step Into The Grand Tour song karaoke and doing a video to it, where you guys suggested people sing Dan Dan instead as a rebel act against FUNimation at the time XD;

Logic is fun but irrelevent in this episode.
I am extremely dissapointed that Step Into The Grand Tour is not included in the set as an extra. Dan Dan, to me, is not the opening to DBGT. It's not that I hate the song, it's just that Dan Dan sounds way too... happy for GT. To me, it's not the way GT is supposed to be.
However, I am pleased to hear that all four of you relativley approve of this set as opposed to last time.
Great episode overall though.

Aw... another Julian-less episode
Anyway, I probably won't be picking the GT box set up because I doubt I'll ever actually watch it.

I agree with everything you said. Funimation could have done something else or give the fans the option of picking which one of the themes they prefer. I have the old sets and I would probably stick with that but if I do decide to buy the new ones I will just skip the intro.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I lost the bet... whatever
---
I "might" get the GT Boxset. It's been a long time since I last visited that anime store.
But just in case, I still have my first volume of FUNimation's singles that have the fake recap

While listening to the podcast, I noticed that you said that use the H word for Mr. Satan only. Mr. Satan IS sometimes used but not all the time (e.g. H-man in episode 24 but Mr. Satan in episode 30). It's inconsistent but then is FUNimation XD

While you're certainly entitled to your opinion, what FUNimation were presenting in terms of tone wasn't Dragonball GT, that faux hardcore depressing crap was shoehorned in by FUNimation, that isn't what the show is.
I'm not trying to tell you that you can't have your own preferences, but I guess it irks me a little when someone complains about a more accurate treatment of the show.

All the episode listings I've checked say that the "Baby Saga" ends at episode 40. If this set only goes to 34, it doesn't finish the arc...
Where does a dream go when you wake up and can't remember it anymore?
Nowhere.

Such is true. Episode 41 is the little "filler" (bah, you know what I mean) toss-away episode with the Tenka-ichi Budokai in-between the Bebi and Super 17 arcs.
Which, incidentally, might be one of my favorite GT episodes.

That's right, 34 leaves 6 more episodes of the Baby arc. Hujio was actually telling me how he got that part wrong in the episode. Another thing is that SSJ4 Goku doesn't actually appear until episode 35, so the box cover's kind of misleading there (Toei also did the same sort of thing with the R2 singles release of GT, slapping SSJ4 Goku on every cover way before he appeared in the series).
edit: Darn you Vegerot!

Vic Mignogna's last name is pronounced like "Minnyanna" or "Minnyonna", something like that, you can hear it in ADV Films Macross Audio Commentaries.

I did admit to that, yes. I'm just not as familiar with the GT arcs as I am with the other two series. But, after we (@Herms) discussed SSJ4 Goku not being in this set, I went and looked at episode 34. We were wrong. SSJ4 Goku makes an appearance for all of 40 seconds at the end of the episode.
Another thing to clear up: GT is in-fact in mono, however I realized the GT special was actually in stereo, which once again begs the question, "really?!"
