The untitled first chapter of DeSpo FigherZ, by Hiroshi Otogi, was first published in Japan in the September 2018 issue of Shueisha's Saikyō Jump.
Synopsis
In the year 20XX, following the invention of the collapsible Viewtiphone phone-tablet device, and its attachable BV-X game controllers, eSports have become an extremely popular global pastime. Among the most popular spectator games is the traditional fighting game, Dragon Ball FighterZ. A young boy named Mamoru, the son of a candy company owner, sets out to begin assembling his own team of players for the national Team FighterZ tournament. During an attempt to recruit the hot-blooded street-brawler Kenzo, also known as the "Back Alley Saiyan," he has run-in with the world-famous pro-gamer Shindo as well.
Summary
In the year 20XX, the Viewtiphone, a collapsible phone-tablet device, and the attachable Battle View Cross game controllers, or BV-X for short, have lead to a surge in eSports popularity. The occupation of "pro-gamer" consistently polls as the top dream of young people. Among the most popular spectator games is Dragon Ball FighterZ, and among the most famous FighterZ players is the "World Pro-Gaming Prince" Shindo, also known as "The Man Who Never Smiles."
A boy named Mamoru watches a recording of one of Shindo's FighterZ matches on his Viewtiphone. He too aspires to be a great pro-gamer one day. First, however, he will have to get a team together and win the national Team FighterZ Tournament. While he is watching the match, a gang of rough kids known as "The Gang" spot him, quipping to one another that Mamoru looks pretty rich.
The Gang snatches his Viewtiphone and ask what he is doing in such a rough neighborhood. Mamoru tearfully answers that he was looking for someone. One of the gang members challenges him to a monetary bet on a FighterZ match.
Another figure emerges from an alley. "A match?" he asks; how would they like to go against him? Mamoru identifies the newcomer by his pink afro as the street-brawler Kenzo, also known as the "Back Alley Saiyan," and he is just the person he was looking for. The gang members are terrified. When they said a match, they did not mean a brawl. Kenzo tells them to quit complaining and begins to beat them up.
Kenzo is even stronger than Mamoru had heard. After the match, Mamoru makes a proposition to Kenzo: he would like him to join his FighterZ team. He figures Kenzo's fighting spirit is exactly the kind of thing he needs. Before Kenzo can respond, however, he collapses from a lack of blood sugar.
Luckily Mamoru always keeps some candy on hand, which he gives to Kenzo. Mamoru reveals his father is the head of a candy company. He begins trying to convince Kenzo: before the thrill of winning earlier, there must have been a sense of fun, right? If he can enjoy a brawl, perhaps he can enjoy the win-lose nature of a game.
Kenzo cuts him off. People's "fun" is not the kind of thing he can measure with a ruler. He will decide what he does and does not do. He says he will not be playing something as delicate as a video-game and tells Mamoru to get lost.
Another man emerges from the alley, face covered by the collar of his jacket and a cap. "Something … as delicate … as a game?" As someone who holds games dear, he cannot overlook a comment like that. He challenges Kenzo to a game match. Mamoru recognizes the man's identify from his voice: it's Shindo, the world-famous FighterZ player.
Kenzo does not care who he is. He orders Mamoru to hand over his controller and stay out of the way. He will play Shindo, but on one condition: if he wins, Shindo has to face him in a fistfight next.
Shindo announces he does not plan to lose at anything, and the sheer pressure of his will blows Kenzo back. They get ready to select their three characters. Meanwhile, Mamoru is so startled by experiencing the aura of a pro-gamer that he wets himself. A man with a microphone and headset appears behind him to ask him please not to get pee on the "stage." Decked out with the character for "judge" on his forehead, this is Judge Man, a mysterious figure who appears wherever eSports are played, and quietly disappears once the match is over. Using the special eSpots Projector that only he possesses, he can display matches in the air.
Shindo selects a team of Hit, Majin Boo (Pure), and Vegeta (Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan), while Kenzo chooses Nappa, Kuririn and Goku (Super Saiyan).
According to Judge Man, Shindo is known as a "speed specialist." Against Kenzo's line-up, ignoring the difference in their experience, it appears the match-up could be rough. Mamoru wonders if Shindo will be okay, but Shindo says he is going to offer Kenzo a handicap. Instead of using all three fighters, if Kenzo can knock out just one, he will consider him the winner.
The handicap infuriates Kenzo, but the two begin their match. Mamoru is amazed at the speed of Kenzo's button presses. At first Nappa seems to be getting blow after blow in on Hit, but Shindo soon declares he has seen through Kenzo's movements. He taunts Kenzo for being so slow. He begins to completely turn the match around using Vanish Moves. He warns that amateurs should not take pros too lightly.
Mamoru tries to warn Kenzo, but it is too late. Hit moves in for a killing blow, taking Nappa down. Kenzo has two fighters left. Kenzo is shocked by Shindo's performance. He only took his eyes off him for an instant. Shindo tells him to hurry and get on with his second fighter. Hit begins demolishing Kenzo's second fighter, Kuririn, with a string of fierce combos. Judge Man comments that Shindo has no mercy even toward rookies. Kuririn cannot even seem to move.
Kenzo is furious. He is sure he was moving the character. Shindo scolds him. If he cannot create an opening, he will never be able to land an attack. Shindo is absolutely controlling the pace of the match and finishes Kuririn off as well. Judge Man wonders if anyone can stop Shindo.
Kenzo calls for a time out. Judge Man begins to tell him it is not allowed, but Shindo interrupts to say he does not care. Kenzo calls out to Mamoru and requests more candy. After chowing down, he declares he will be able to concentrate. Shocking everyone with his new sense of composure, Kenzo reaffirms his intention to win. Mamoru thinks his new aura to Goku's. At this moment, Kenzo has fully shifted his fighting spirit into the game!
Kenzo's final character, Goku, flies onto the screen. Shindo shouts that whatever Kenzo is thinking, it is all bluster. Goku charges Hit and Hit vanishes. Shindo declares this the end. However, Kenzo declares this to be exactly the opening he was waiting for. Time after time, Kenzo has been watching Shindo's finger movements as he prepares his vanishes and has replaying them in his head. He warns Shindo not to underestimate the "Back Alley Saiyan."
Goku catches Hit and begins unleashing a furious combo. Judge Man announces that Kenzo's attacks are the same as Shindo's before. Goku fires off his special technique, the Super Kamehameha, and defeats Hit.
Under Shindo's own conditions, Judge Man declares Kenzo the winner. Kenzo can hardly believe he won. Shindo says he was utterly defeated, so per their agreement, Kenzo has the right to hit him as much as he pleases. Mamoru cannot believe what he has just seen. Sure enough, he was right to believe in Kenzo's battle sense. However, he is shocked to see Kenzo coming his way. Kenzo announces he is joining Mamoru's team, to both Mamoru and Shindo's surprise. Kenzo declares that next time he will beat all three fighters. Until then, their promised fistfight can wait.
Shindo grins and begins to walk away. The game was fun, right? Kenzo tells him not to be stupid. To him it was only a match.
