Super Saiyan 5 is a theoretical transformation briefly mentioned in a throwaway line from Dragon Ball GT. Beyond that, the form is often linked to fanworks titled Dragon Ball AF.
In Official Works
In episode 55 of Dragon Ball GT, Vegeta flippantly proclaims "Kakarrot, bring on your Super Saiyan 4, or 5, or whatever you want!"
In a 2014 interview with Akira Toriyama featured in Saikyō Jump, Toriyama was asked "Might we eventually see things such as a Super Saiyan 5…?!" Toriyama did not directly address the question, but Super Saiyan 5 has never appeared in any official Dragon Ball work.[1]
Dragon Ball AF
Origins
The Spanish gaming magazine Hobby Consolas contains a “teléfono rojo” (lit: red phone) section which features fanart and letters from readers. In its May 1999 issue (No. 92), David Montiel Franco submitted a drawing of a character in an artstyle similar to that of Akira Toriyama with the text “Dragon Ball AF” in the bottom-right corner.[2] This image spread across the fandom without comment or context from Franco until a 2018 interview in which he revealed that the design was for an original character of his, Tablos.[3]
Toyotaro and Young Jijii
In November 2006, Toyotaro—then working under the pseudonym Toyble—featured this same design in his own fan-manga titled DBAF.[a] In his series proper, the design is attributed to Son Goku but never actually referred to as “Super Saiyan 5” within the manga.[b] However on his now defunct blog, Toyotaro did explicitly use "Super Saiyan 5" to refer to the form.[4]
Super Saiyan 5 is also predominantly featured in another popular Dragon Ball AF: After the Future (shortened to just "After the Future" beginning with its sixth volume) fan-manga by Young Jijii. This series, which debuted in 2009[5] features Son Goku, Vegeta, and Son Gohan using the form. Though Jijii keeps the white hair and fur, whereas Toyotaro's incarnation of the form lifted directly from Franco's Tablos design, Jijii has Son Goku wear his gi from Dragon Ball GT. This incarnation of Super Saiyan 5 requires the user to undergo “emotional control” training to attain,[6] and one must master balancing the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure to perfect it.[7]
Legacy
Video Games
Beginning with Dragon Ball Z3, games featuring Son Goku and Gogeta in their Super Saiyan 4 forms often include alternate costumes featuring either their hair (Gogeta) or fur (Goku) in a lighter grey.
Merchandise
Super Saiyan 5 is a popular subject for many unofficial pieces of Dragon Ball merchandise, with even more recent “Third Party” studios such as Kong Studio and Black Hole Toys producing detailed, highly-articulated figures for the form in the style of the official S.H.Figuarts line.
