Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Also remember Medabots and Beyblade were on TV.

Didn't see Medabots, but I do remember Beyblade on Cartoon Network UK and Toonami. Loved that show as a kid too and used to collect the beyblades.

Funny story about Medabots. It used some of the same music as the Westwood DBZ dub.

I watched ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Was Tenchi Muyo on Toonami UK?

I remember Digimon and Sailor Moon on Fox Kids. Yu-GI-Oh! I think was on Nick?

It was on Cartoon Network during the days of the Toonami block, along with the other Tenchi shows, although I remember it being pretty short lived. And yes Gundam Wing also aired around ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

They more or less co-existed. Dragon Ball Z came to the States first but it didn’t start airing on Toonami and do gangbusters until just before Pokemon made it’s U.S debut. The first movie was released around the time the in-house dub was finally wrapping up the Frieza saga. Pokemania started ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Something else I just thought of is the popularity of GT and movie characters overseas.

Characters like Broly, Cooler, Gogeta, and the SS4s were featured heavily in the marketing for Budokai 3, because of how popular they were in the US specifically. All of these characters have been included in ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Yeah, Batman never really seemed to get reruns the way Spider-Man did — that one always felt like it was on TV. I grew up with Batman Beyond and the Return of the Joker film. Funny enough, it wasn’t until Netflix that I finally watched Batman: The Animated Series last year. That kicked off a whole ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Since you're in the UK do you remember what channel Batman TAS aired on? Google says CBBC but I could swear it was on Cartoon Netowrk. I remember Batman of the Future (Batman Beyond) and Justice League were 100% on CN.

I was quite late to the party with Batman TAS, and didn't see it in full ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Also the violence really stood out compared to US cartoons I was watching at the times. Other shows characters wouldn't even punch each other.

I remember the "no punching" rule being a thing on Spider-Man TAS. They got around it sometimes, like having him punch someone with his fist coming ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Add in Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Jackie Chan Adventures and I'm in a similar boat.

I was really into both of those too. :)

There were a lot of awesome shows that simply didn't have close to as many episodes as the DB franchise.

Stuff like Batman Beyond, Xmen Evolution, and ...

Re: What if Dragon Ball was never dubbed in English?

Most of us on this forum would've probably never gotten into it, as well as countless others who grew up loving it.

Many have had their lives enriched through their fandom, to the point were they'd be considerably worse off without it.

In an alternate universe where I never became a fan, it's ...

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball will be remembered in 60 years?

It probably will be remembered to some extent. I think it largely depends on there being a steady supply of new material.

Someone mentioned stuff like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. I think Scooby Doo is a great example. It's had many different iterations spanning decades.

Another obvious ...

Re: 15th Anniversary of the Kenji Yamamoto controversy.

I always loved the Budokai game soundtracks, and agree it was a massive shame to see them replaced for the HD collection. Those tracks were plagiarised, but they were awesome, and really brought the spirit of DB.

I was lucky enough to get Raging Blast 2 at launch, so my copy has Yamamoto's music ...

Re: Crazy idea for a new DB physical release

I'd always be up for the Saban dub getting a Blu-ray release. It's the version that introduced most of the English speaking world to the franchise, had years of reruns, and was watched and enjoyed by millions. To this day Funimation's dubs still retain certain elements from it. It deserves to be ...

Re: Dragon Ball Viewing Order

Over the years I've tended to rewatch Z more than the others in general, so I often started with that while watching the other shows separately whenever.

Although a couple of years back I decided to rewatch OG DB and went to Kai from there. It flowed surprisingly well. DB had less filler than Z to ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

Double posting bc the two unpopular takes are so unrelated.

GT is better dubbed with the Menza score, and I say this as someone who prefers the Japanese version for everything else.

The corny dated approach actually improves GT and sometimes the dub makes legitimate corrections to the plot that ...

Re: Unpopular DB opinions

I like both DBS Broly and Super Hero, though I like Broly more.

One big detriment to Super Hero is how it disregards Gohan's excellent ToP development, and has him carelessly slack off yet again. His training with Piccolo prior to the ToP really felt like it was hammering home he'd learned his ...

Re: Does Movie 11 deserve its reputation as the “worst movie?”

I'd rank it pretty low, although I enjoy most of the Z movies.

Bio Broly isn't bad by any means. It just lacks Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan, and is a disappointment for those who wanted another actual Broly movie.

Its continuity is interesting, as it acts as a followup to both Movie 10 and the 25th ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Daima" Crunchyroll Home Release Thread

At this point I'm curious if the US Daima Blu-ray will be region locked. If not then I'd probably import it, rather than wait forever in the hopes of a UK release.

Crunchyroll's Daima Blu-ray is coded Regions A & B, so if you’re in the UK, feel free to import!

Good to know. Thanks!

Re: How many times have you seen the anime?

I've seen Z too many times to count, largely because of the constant re-runs on UK TV from 2000-2005. I've also watched it on DVD and Blu-ray a bunch of times.

For both OG DB and GT I'd have to guess 6-8 times each?

I've also seen Kai quite a bit thanks to the Kix broadcast from 2012-2015. They ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Daima" Crunchyroll Home Release Thread

I wonder if Crunchyroll left it too late to announce a UK release now that Dragon Ball Super is returning. That said we still have at least a year before we get into actual new material, but I still think theres a chance the retellings could be good and be able to compete with a Daima home release ...

Re: "Dragon Ball Daima" Crunchyroll Home Release Thread

So as far as I can see there's still no word on a UK Blu-ray release for Daima.

It's frustrating because the dub still isn't available on streaming here either. Seems we always have to get screwed over by rights issues.

I remember Manga UK taking forever to announce Super's home release too ...
