Re: The new Dragon Ball room for 2021

The thing is, Dragon Ball, until Super, was fundamentally a show that went new directions every arc or so. Super not doing that is a change, and certainly one for the worse. Yes, Toriyama constantly took the story in new directions, but the fundamental core of what that story is never changed: It a...

Re: The new Dragon Ball room for 2021

No one's crying out for Dragon Ball to become a deep, complex drama show. The core sentiment I sense from those that want the story to go in new directions like this that Dragon Ball needs to change into something it's fundamentally not. That's what I'm criticizing. What people do want is for the c...

Re: The new Dragon Ball room for 2021

And that's fine. I don't watch Dragon Ball for complex storytelling. I watch it because the fights are fun, the characters are cool, and the antagonists are unique and interesting, with the exception of a few. I watch it because it's plain, simple fun. Exactly. Dragon Ball is just a fun martial art...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

I've been watching anime for a long time, and trust me when I say that sub only fans might be some of the most elitist pricks you might fine on the interwebs. Then you've found some corner of the internet that I'm not aware of. But then, I'm skeptical considering the following statement: And honest...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

It's fine to prefer the Japanese dub over the english dub. Different strokes and all of that. But the idea that somehow watching only the original dub makes you a "real fan." That's the sort of gate-keeping I keep talking about. DBZ's continued success should be cause for celebration, not trying to...

Re: Dubs shouldnt bend over backwards to please purists. Subs shouldnt plase Casuals

I don't think sub fans for the most part are complaining about changes that are necessary for stuff that doesn't translate. It's about changes that by all accounts are not necessary for the script to work for a Western audience. Also, I personally don't like the use of the word "purist" to describe ...

Re: Can we talk about the Funimation Movie Soundtracks?

Never liked it.

Just like the Falconer score, it makes the music come off as trying to be cool in a way that feels obnoxious, abrasive, and dated. It feels like I'm being assaulted whenever I try watching the film with that music.

Re: A Change of Heart

Jiren, ironically. Despite sounding like a pretty flat character when I first heard about him, he's grown on me a little as a concept since he genuinely represents something new for a major Dragon Ball antagonist (something I've always given Zamasu credit for): An anti-hero who on paper is supposed ...

Re: Has Super's reputation softened or hardened since it ended?

The irony for me is that I was very apathetic towards Super and did not watch the anime at all during its run, let alone read the manga. I had no interest because I figured it would ultimately just be more of the same (which sounds like it mostly was). Zamasu I always gave credit for being a genuine...

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

No problem, just as a remind, it's right after the "Goku's theme" sequence. Also, there is M1220, I don't recognize the motif in that track, but the whole calm part after the piano intro (before the short action sequence in the ending) reminds me of the Super Saiyan theme, but as a calm variant, bu...

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

Actually, you can disagree with me, but I'm pretty sure in Movie 5 the Super Saiyan Motif appears as a variant, when Goku is about to transform in SSJ right after he holds that dead bird, it plays 3 notes that are very similar to Super Saiyan theme first sequence for me. But I think you're right ab...

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

To add to all this, there is a leitmotif for the Saiyans that originated in the TV series at the start of Z and shows up going forward in the movies as the Super Saiyan theme. It first shows up in the movies when Goku goes "Super Saiyan" against Slug in Movie 4 and plays more or less every time a ch...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

Me? Not really. Sorry if it seemed that way, I'm bad at not coming off as a dickbag when I share a strongly-held opinion. But in general, it does frustrate me to see elitism for any particular version. But, on the other hand, I do think it's sensible to acknowledge the difference. Main reason I quo...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

My personal hills The whole Dub vs sub that exists to this day is insufferable to read in 2020. the fans of either version (yes, both sides) who throw jabs at each other and/or their preferred version needs to stop. Agreed. Not sure if these are criticizing me specifically or not, but I want to res...

My personal hills?

Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball Z and the original Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z are not the same show.

Funimation dub fans and Japanese DBZ fans are not fans of the same show.

Funimation's dub fractured the western fan base more than a faithful dub would have.

Re: "You're a Weeb"

This may sound cheesy and preachy, but I don't really care how one watches and enjoys DB. Like watching in English? You win. Japanese? You win too. In the end we are watching the same shows . The bolded part of your statement ignores just how much of DBZ was altered with Funimation's dub. This is a...

Re: How to properly watch GT ?

Baby is ultimately what his name indicates: A childish being whose motives were just an excuse to feed his own ego. I think it's pretty clear that he doesn't actually give a damn about his subjects and only keeps the useful ones close to him until he has to save his own skin.

Re: SAY-IN - SPECIAL BEAM CAN-IN - SUN GOKU - DESTRUCTO DISK | Why does Dragon Ball STILL suffer with these shortcomings

That's the big disconnect in these discussions. A lot of these people on the dub side just straight up don't care. I can't speak for every dub fan but I'm more of a take everything as they come type of person. I'd rather things be accurate but I also don't care about changes that don't bother me. A...

Re: “There is nothing to learn from Dragon Ball,” says Akira Toriyama’s editor, Kazuhiko Torishima

I think online discussions would be pretty boring if everyone subscribed to that line of thinking, especially when it comes to Dragon Ball. I agree with Sadala to an extent. I think most of the online Dragon Ball fandom could stand to take this franchise a little less seriously. I've personally nev...

Re: Your ideal Dragon Ball sequel.

Isn't this what dragon ball has become, despite the main characters still being around ? Exactly, which is why it should be allowed to end, not continue. I get that the topic of the thread is deliberately set on the premise of "if Dragon Ball is forced to continue", but the actual solution is to ju...
