As much I hate the cropping, I don't think it totally pointless. They are trying to futureproof the series, since a very high percentage of new TVs are widescreen. I would rather have some cropping with a little extra on the sides, than ugly stretching.Castor Troy wrote:I can't wait to see their reasons for the "widescreen justification".

Well yeah, but that's not the point. Average consumers hate bars, either bars on the top and bottom for widescreen movies, or pillars for 4:3 stuff. Funimation is trying to appease these people who bought 16:9 TVs.Brad Redfield wrote:...you can set your widescreen TV to 4:3 mode, thus pillarboxing the image and presenting it without distortion.EricM wrote:I would rather have some cropping with a little extra on the sides, than ugly stretching.

That's their problem. FUNi shouldn't be making it mine by removing part of the series.EricM wrote:Well yeah, but that's not the point. The great thing about current TVs and DVD players is that in general, you do have a choice about this stuff. You can stretch and zoom the image to your heart's content, while the DVD still has the original image for me to watch without distortion. That's the standard way to present 4:3 TV shows on DVD.
I can't wait to get this set since this first episodes I have never really seen with much attention(became a fan after the appearence of Trunks
) Hopefully I can own the entire series even if it's in widescreen with this edition and don't get my walllet screwed like with the UUEs.

FUNimation seems to disagree with you.- Widescreen justification: "A ways to rejuvinate the brand with a young audience and introduce them to the greatest action adventure anime ever! There's a nine-year-old born every day."

It's only distracting when you first get the TV. You get used to it pretty quickly if you watch enough 4:3 material (and know enough to change your options). The thing is nobody that sells TVs bothers to tell the consumers these things and so they often think they're getting the real thing when they aren't. (No black bars + brighter colors = easier sell)EricM wrote:Brad Redfield wrote:Well yeah, but that's not the point. hmm thats a great point, I never thought of it like this. Everyone has a choice in how to experience the full dragon ball story and I think that adding or taking away movies/sagas makes a big difference in the experience because of the things you know that will come or ironic moments. (for example, if you consider the Bojack movie to be "canon" then the moment where Goku dies against Cell will have extra irony.Conan the SSJ wrote:Not me, I actually find them entertaining and interesting to watch. To me, the Marron and Chichi getting pissed things are fun, while Gohan, Piccolo, and Kuririn getting the spotlight in the battle against Garlic Jr. has some fantastic action moments. Heck, there's also the Vegeta in space scenes we get, showing us his hunt for Goku while wiping out some of the Planet Trade empire. Overall, it helps things for me that I consider DBZ movie 1 canon with the anime.Aoi wrote:hmm not bad, but do any of you skip the garlic junior episodes when you have the chance?
But for me, I cant put Movie 1 (a great movie) in my full story because it takes away the surprise of Gohan being really powerful and also it takes away how big it was that Goku and Piccolo were going to fight together for the first time vs. Radditz.
Also the same for my favorite Dragon ball movie (9) because it makes the moment with Gohan and Cell less unique as Goku helps him again.
But the Garlic Junior saga is fun like the movies in many ways, but I cant see it as a direct continuation of the main story. For me it is like watching: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, then "Jar Jar's Big Adventure", and then Revenge of the Sith.
After seeing how Akira Toriyama is a genious in writting and how dragon ball is one grand relating story, I preffer to just experience how he intended (and add the galactic tournament at the start of the anime buu saga
But I understand what you mean and one day I will try to view the entire "expanded" dragon ball story and see how I feel about it. The story would mostly look like this
+ Dragon ball
- Goku Saga
- Red Ribbon Saga
- Tournament Saga
- Piccolo Saga
+ Dragon ball Z
- Movie 1
- Saiyan Saga
- Frieza Saga
- Movie 5 (GT makes movie 5 happen)
- Garlic Junior Saga
- Android Saga
- Movie 9 (only movie TOEI made into story on purpose)
- Majin Buu Saga
- Movie 13
+Dragon ball GT
- Bebi Saga
- Super 17/Dragon Saga
this would be completeley different view of what dragon ball is for me (make it a little more about fighting than the characters and "Akira" dragon ball story, and I will try it one day.

And hey, I for one completely agree with that point of view of watching the anime in terms of an overall grand scale. I know I've brought it up numerous times how I view the entire anime universe. When I do have the entire series and if I have a chance for it, this is how I intend to fully experience the DragonBall anime story as I view it canon-wise.Aoi wrote:But I understand what you mean and one day I will try to view the entire "expanded" dragon ball story and see how I feel about it. But this isn't a thread about what we view as canon, lord knows we got enough of those, so let's not dwell too much on it.Conan the SSJ wrote:Bardock Special.

To FUNimation's widescreen "justification": What in God's name are they smoking? There's a 9-year-old born everyday? What does that even mean? Okay, so they want to appeal to a younger audience. So l suppose that's why they added words like 'damn' and 'hell'? In addition to the fact that kids most likely won't give a shit about "widescreen" or remastering. Ugh, I'm done.
I was Thanos before the MCU existed!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, FUNimation is lazy.
This means, A) They are too lazy to repair film, B) They are too lazy to make a full screen release after they already released a widescreen version, and C) They are too lazy to think of new packaging for the other season sets.

If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

It means the same thing that "there's a sucker born every minute" means. They think their customers are idiots, and don't care that they treat us like shit.Thanos wrote:To FUNimation's widescreen "justification": What in God's name are they smoking?
