Wow!, great job guys!

I really enjoyed that little insight into Piccolo's character, not to mention the nice art.

I really hope someone around here has the other two stories, because I now crave them. :P

Well, Andrew put up a second scan of page 2, and it is clearer than the first one but I still can't make out some parts (the problem is that the background is so darn dark). Is there maybe a way of zooming in past 100% or something?

Really? I can't seem to find the second scan. But, how's this?

If you click on the link in his very first post, you'll see that there's another scan of page 2 at the bottom. The edge is now clear, but there are still a few kanji that are too blurry for me.
But, how's this?

It doesn't really help with the few parts that I really can't make out, since enlarging it seems to just get me bigger pictures of the blurriness, if that makes any sense.

Still, I think I'll just translate what I can and see what happens. Maybe I'll be able to use the context to figure out the rest.

Herms, could you check the translation on this? There's a couple translations that are different from yours. Just want to make sure:
Toriyama Boss wrote:Image

Red caption on right:"Highly praised! The prince of Saiyan"

Black caption middle top:"Pride of the Fighter Race! The fight of the lonesome warrior Vegeta."

"This illustration story depicts the story of Vegeta, from his younger days starting with his birth as prince of the fighting race - Saiyan, until the point which he was killed by Freeza and then resurrected with the power of Purunga (the dragon of Planet Namek).

This story acts as a continuation of the Freeza Arc in the TV series, depicting the background story of Vegeta harbouring killing intent towards Freeza while he was acting as his subordinate, and the secret reason for him to have an interest in Earth's dragonball.

Similar to Piccolo's Arc, the script is written by Mr Takao Koyama and illustrations by Mr Minoru Maeda."

Connection (or continuity) with Main Story

"In Episode 78 of DBZ, it tells the story of the destruction of Planet Vegeta by Freeza and the real story behind the extinction of Saiyajin. The appearance of young Vegeta, King Vegeta and other characters that were not created in the canon is the pivoting reason for this episode.

Purple image's caption: Freeza leading a band of warriors to rebel against King Vegeta in the anime. However, the power of Freeza was way above what the king had expected.

Vegeta image's caption: Young Vegeta as shown in the anime. From this moment on, he was very arrogant."

Blue title: Trunks Arc: The lonely fighter from the future!! Trunks

The warrior who arrived from the desolate future. The story of the sole warrior.

Trunks came from the desolate future world in which a battle was fought with artificial human beings. The story is written in a style of memory recollection from Trunks youthful time to present day in which he was defeated by Cell. As he reconciled the differences between his imagination and the reality of who Vegeta, his father whom he met for the first time was, he slowly began to understand his father. The script was supervised by Mr Aya Matsui, illustrations by Mr Minoru Maeda.

The other images are too small for me to read. I can't translate the Akira Toriyama interviews from the Shenron times, nor the Gohan scans for those of you who are interested.

Sorry.

OK, here is page 2 at last. I'm kind of shakey on the second half of the first paragraph, where most of the stuff I couldn't make out was, but I think I got the basic idea across. Everything after that was much easier. I'm still not really sure what Piccolo's remark that his "eyes were always shining" is all about, but that has nothing to do with the image quality.

First panel, right side
I was born from an egg that my father put all of his power into right before his death. The place where I hatched from my egg was a forest. I remember it well, even now. When I hatched from my egg, the sky’s blueness poured into my eyes for the first time. It was the color of peace itself. I actually believed that the sky had been dyed the color of my sorrowful blood. Even as a child, I thought only of avenging my defeated father and completing his work of filling the world with evil and fear.

First panel, left side
At any rate, I also remember that the sunlight which streamed down into the forest was frightfully dazzling. Sparkling sunlight…to a demon’s eyes it is especially dazzling. However, what rose to the top of my dizzy mind was the name of my enemy. Son Goku!! I will defeat you, no matter what it takes!!

Second panel
When I had sworn this oath, images from the battle that had unfolded between my father and Son Goku vividly appeared in my mind. An image from the moment of my father’s death was particularly strong. I could see that Son Goku was a terrifying, gigantic monster. “My son…someday, avenge your father…never let the evil in your heart be erased!” Even now, I have not forgotten my father’s voice as he spoke these words.

Third panel, right side
My battle began from that moment when I was born. In any case, I had to protect myself. Humph…like Gohan’s life in the desert, it was no trouble. Like him, my eyes were always gleaming, but it was because I was all alone.

Third panel, left side
Even as a child, I could used the powers unique to the demon clan, and easily knocked out the beasts that attacked me. The wild animals came to fearfully keep their distance from me.

***********************************

This page clears up something from the later pages: On page 3, Piccolo says that as he trained he was haunted by Goku's image, but when he finally sees Goku he's shocked to find him completely different from that image. As we see here, the reason is that what he thought was Goku was actually the image of oozaru Goku that appeared during Goku's final attack. It was possible to figure this out from the later pages, because in the panel where Piccolo and Goku start to fight it shows the oozaru image behind Goku again and Piccolo says he finally understood the truth about that image. But it's nice to have it fully explained, I guess. I also like the comparison between Piccolo's early life and Gohan's wilderness training.

I'd love to see that Vegeta story if anyone ever gets ahold of it to scan.
On hiatus.

Here is my translation of those two pages from Daizenshuu 5, based off of Toriyama Boss's initial translation.

Tiny red circle at top: Anime Edition

Big white title: Outside Stories

Text under big white title: New stories that produced original character models for the Dragon Ball anime! Printed in mooks and anime comics, they introduced stories that were not related on TV.

[a "mook" is a sort of half-magizine, half-book thing (hence the name) that they have in Japan]

Blue caption: Piccolo chapter: In the Name of Piccolo Daimao

Small black writing under blue caption: From Weekly Shounen Jump Special Edition: “Dragon Ball Z Anime Special” (Shueisha Publishing)

Black title on the left: From Goku’s arch-nemesis to Gohan’s teacher! The warrior of the demon clan follows a strange destiny.

This illustrated story depicts the complicated change in Piccolo’s mentality, from the moment of his birth to being the teacher of Gohan. From originally being born from Piccolo Daimao, he goes on to fight Goku at the Tenkaichi Budoukai and is defeated. It flows from the main story, with the battle with the Saiyan Raditz and Goku’s death, but depicts things from Piccolo’s perspective. The writing was by the main scriptwriter and series designer for the anime, Mr. Takao Koyama. Illustrations were done by Mr. Minoru Maeda, who was the Chief Illustrations Director then.

Green box below: This Illustrated Story is a tale that depicts the internal changes in Piccolo from episode 123 of the Dragon Ball anime to approximately episode 20 of Dragon Ball Z. It also depicts the psychology of Piccolo prior to his appearance in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai that was not given much mention in the TV series. Reading this story will perhaps give the readers a smoother understanding of Piccolo’s change of heart from battling the Saiyan and becoming the martial arts master of Gohan, the son of his arch-nemesis Goku.

Caption at baby Piccolo: In the anime, Piccolo’s egg drifts down a river. Is this the origin of this Illustrated Story?!

Caption left side: Same as the anime, Piccolo is training Goku's son, Gohan. Though it could be said that this is in order to fight the Saiyans, even for Piccolo this is an unexpected turn of events.

Second page
Blue caption: Vegeta Chapter: High Pride! Vegeta, Prince of the Saiya!"

Black caption middle top: Pride of the Fighter Race! The fight of the lonesome warrior Vegeta."

Small lack text under blue caption: From Weekly Shounen Jump Special Edition “Dragon Ball Z Anime Special II” (Shueisha Publishing)

This Illustrated Story depicts the story of Vegeta, from his younger days starting with his birth as prince of the fighting race - Saiyan, until the point which he was killed by Freeza and then resurrected with the power of Polunga (the Shenlong of Planet Namek).

This story acts as a continuation of the Freeza Arc in the TV series, depicting the background story of Vegeta harboring murderous intent towards Freeza while he was acting as his subordinate, and the secret reason for him having an interest in Earth's dragon balls; various character models were drawn.

Similar to the Piccolo chapter, the writing is by Mr. Takao Koyama and illustrations were supervised by Mr. Minoru Maeda.

Connection with Main Story

In episode 78 of DBZ, it tells the story of the destruction of Planet Vegeta by Freeza and the real story behind the extinction of the Saiyans. The above Illustrated Story became the jumping-off point for episode 78, where young Vegeta, King Vegeta and other characters that were not in the original story appear.

Purple image's caption: King Vegeta leading a band of warriors to rebel against Freeza in the anime. However, Freeza’s power was far beyond what the king had expected.

Vegeta image's caption: Young Vegeta as shown in the anime. From this moment on, he was very arrogant.

Blue title: Trunks Chapter: The Lonely Warrior of the Future!! Trunks

Black writing under blue title: From Weekly Shounen Jump Special Edition Collection “Dragon Ball Z: A Lonely Final Battle” (Home Publishing)

Bolded writing by right picture: The story of the sole warrior who came from the desolated future.

Trunks came from a desolated future world where he fought the androids. The story is written in the style of Trunks’ reminiscence over his childhood to his defeat by Cell in the present. As he reconciled the differences between his imagination and the reality of Vegeta, his father whom he met for the first time, he slowly began to understand his father. The writing was by script supervisor Mr. Aya Matsui. Illustrations were by Mr. Minoru Maeda.

Didn't notice until now, but on the scanslation for page 3, a lot of stuff seems to be missing from the first panel. All of this seems to be left out:
It wasn’t only my body that grew. My power and finesse increased as well. And this was no ordinary power-up. Not a minor thing like a doubling or tripling. To that extent, it felt like my body’s volume along was doubled. I wanted to fight Son Goku as soon as possible.

I figure that Nameks can eat meat, they just don't need to. And Dende, having grown up on Namek, would be used to just drinking water, while the Earth-stranded Kami wouldn't know he could just survive on it.
It's another thing I've always chalked up to the plethora of DB contradictions, but this is a pretty sound theory. Kami-Sama never knew he wasn't from Earth until Vegeta and Nappa showed up anyways, so he probably just realized that the other creatures around him had to eat to survive...and...never realized he didn't exactly have natural hunger instincts? Who knows.

As for the comic, I'd never even heard of this before, in all my years of DB fandom. It's pretty awesome you guys are putting so much effort into the project, too. :D

I don't know why, but I can't access Desire's site at all. I get the "403 Forbidden" message, when I click on the home page here or Desire's links. Any idea why?
