Just found this in some backup archive, my favourite picture of Vegeta (I could go on for hours about the line structure) but anyway - I was wondering if anyone knew where it's from. Looks like something from the Cell arc (armour, but no shoulder pads) but I cant place it.

It actually looks like its from the Freeza arc. The armor that Vegeta wears during the androids/Cell arc has segmented yellowish straps for the shoulders, unlike what you see here. Also, the background looks more like Namek than Earth. Can't pin-point it any farther than that, though.

Vegeta has armor without the shoulder pads in the Freeza arc. He gets it after the Ginyu fights, remember?

So, definitely a post Ginyu fight, pre-death Vegeta. Sounds like the best answer I can get - unless someone can track down the episode?

Could it be from one of the Garlic Jr. filler episodes when Vegeta traveled throughout outer space?

Well the sky is very dark. Looks to me like it's that part where after Vegeta was brought back to life and sees Goku and Freeza fighting.

Maybe, anyone wanna skim through episode 101? The animation wasn't good on that episode, though, so I'm a little unsure (but the dark sky really suggests it's late in the fight).

That actually sounds more plausible (better animation for those episodes, as I recall).

Yea, that episode did have one of the top animators at work. Triangle-crap guy did the one before it.

Ya I thought of those scenes too, but then I looked at the expression on his face. Looked like it could be when he was watching them battle. Though still very likely you're correct.

Nah, it's from episode 77 where Freeza has just started powering up and making everyone squirm. Great scene

Sounds about right. You'll actually see a lot of these. I'm not huge into the cel scene (maybe Meri can do a better job explaining), but it sounds like it's pretty rare to get the image with its original background, and when you do, it bumps up the price exponentially.

Yea, I had a feeling that's what it was. I mean the animation styles are both different (despite the good quality) and the outlines of Vegeta's portrait doesn't look natural with the background (saying that it looks like it was placed on top of it). But this stuff happens a lot and it fucks with people's heads when they see a scene with a different background.

Indeed. I have 3 cells(2 of Goku and 1 of Piccolo) and only one that has it's original background. The Piccolo one had it's douga with it, but no background of any kind at all. One of the Goku ones also came with it's douga but has a fake background, almost looks like he's fighting on Arlia. XD As for the one I got with it's original background and douga, I pretty much lucked out on it a number of years ago when DB collectible stuff was still a little less rare. I ended up paying $150 US for that one. I imagine it would fetch even more now. So ya as you can see, you find cels in plenty of varying states, so you don't have to neccessarily pay a ton, just depending on what it comes with affects price and value.

It is very hard to find a Cel with the original background.
Also scenes sometimes get several layers, like in the scene we are talkling about now, the rocks are on a separate layer, those layers are also missing often.

That's right, Goku should be in front of Trunks there, but he was placed on a separate layer and didn't make it with the Trunks Cel.

Then there are also Cels that are entirely painted, meaning the background and character are all on 1 layer, like these:

I am lucky enough to have found some Cels with original backgrounds by the way, such as:

I should know a thing or two about Cels by now, have been collecting them for five years now.
