edit/update: Hujio has restructured the Daizenshuu 1 bonus coverage page a bit, so the previous link didn't work anymore. Sorry if this confused anyone. I fixed the link in my signature as well.

Anyway, the way it is now is that by clicking on the new link in the initial post and my signature, you'll go to a page with the table of contents for the daizenshuu as well as the Toriyama interview. To go to other parts of the daizenshuu, such as the complete spine image or the Shenron Times, just click on their names in the table of contents.

As for the status of Daizenshuu 2: I've just finished translating everything in it, or at least everything that I'm going to translate. I decided that I didn't want to translate the first and last chapters of the manga (which are reprinted in it). I think Viz did a good enough job with them, and getting hold of a copy of them in any language isn't too difficult anyway. So now Hujio is busy working on putting everything into convenient webpage form, recreating charts, scanning in images, looking over my translations and making sure I didn't do stuff like spell tankoubon "tankouban", and a whole bunch of other things.

Yeah, I decided to condense it all a little bit. Mostly because as I work on Daizenshuu 2, which has a lot more material, I realized that the bonus coverage page for it would be huge! So I went ahead and changed the bonus coverage page for Daizenshuu 1 so they'd match.

Update: So it has been about two months since the last post, but we're finally done with Daizenshuu 2. You can head on over to kanzentai or follow the links in my signature.

Here are some notes I made on the Toriyama interview:

Toriyama mentions that the Ginyu Special-Squad is based off of sentai. This is a reference to Super Sentai, a series of special-effects shows put out by Toei, the same company that makes the DragonBall anime. The Super Sentai series is what became Power Rangers in America, by editing the footage of the costumed heroes fighting monsters together with new footage of American actors. The Japanese name for the Ginyu Special-Squad, ginyu toku-sentai is a giveaway to their inspiration. Most sentai hero teams have 5 members, each of a different color, and perform elaborate poses when fighting. It's not too hard to see the connection between that and the Ginyu Special-Squad. Great Saiyaman is also pretty heavily inspired by Super Sentai.

Toriyama mentions that the inspiration of Muscle Tower was the video game Spartan X, which is the Japanese name for Kung-Fu Master. Kung-Fu Master/Spartan X is actually a video game adaptation of Wheels on Meals, a Jacky Chan movie. However, it seems the game also heavily incorporated elements from the Bruce Lee movie Game of Death, where five comrades have to reach the top of a 5-floored pagoda with a different enemy on each floor. Kung-fu Master/Spartan X took this idea, and it was probably the main inspiration for Muscle Tower.

Toriyama mentions the Freeza was inspired by land sharks during “the Bubble”. This refers to Japan's Bubble Economy, when real estate speculation was rampant. Freeza and his followers' planet-selling business of finding planets that would fetch a good price when resold is real estate speculation on a grand scale.

Wow, the Ginyu Force and Power Ranger, that's pretty hilarious. Who'd have thought that part of Dragonball Z was influenced by Power Rangers? What kind of wonderful world is this?

Hey I was wondering, did you guys translate all the attacks in the Special attacks section?

Yeah, that should be all of them there. Daizenshuu 2's Special Attack section isn't nearly as thorough as the one in Daizenshuu 7, since it focuses mostly on the major attacks.

OK, so I mentioned when I updated the site with Shenron Times #2 that Greg Werner had made a translation of the Shenron Times #2 interview with Toriyama and his three successive editors, and that it had a few major inaccuracies. Werner's translation can still be found here, and like most of his stuff it's spread throughout the internet. Unfortunately, it seems to have been one of the earliest interviews he translated, and there are quite a few major mistakes:

First, in Werner's translation it says that Toriyama was forced to have Goku grow up, when actually Toriyama demanded to his editor Torishima that he be allowed to have Goku grow up. Werner's translation also seems to imply that Toriyama had all three of his editors all throughout DragonBall's run, rather than one after the other. For instance, Werner's translation has Takeda talk as if he was working with Toriyama when Goku grew up, when he didn't come on until much later.

The interview says that when he started DragonBall's serialization, Toriyama had already planned out three chapters in advance (so about to where Goku and Bulma meet Kame-sennin). Werner mistranslated this as “three sagas”, and adds a footnote saying that this refers to the search for the dragonballs, Kame-sennin's training, and the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai. This is of course way, way more than the interview actually says Toriyama had planned, and contradicts what Toriyama says in the Daizenshuu 2 Super Interview about how he actually came up with the Kame-sennin training arc and 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai. Still, you sometimes still see people say that Toriyama had planned all the way to the 21st TB when beginning DragonBall, a sign of Greg Werner's huge influence on English-speaking DB fandom that continues today.

Words cannot properly express my gratitude for you guys doing this. It must've taken quite the amount of time and effort to actually pull it off. Now we can compare Viz's release with your guys' translations if they actually pull through and release all the other Daizenshuu.

My one real complaint is that the Bonus Coverage section doesn't seem to be that noticeable and seems to be more of something that you'd only find if you were looking for it. The same goes for the multiple sections inside the Bonus Coverage section. Maybe add something like a note at the top of each Daizenshuu's main page as well as each Bonus Section's main page for easier navigation?

Not to be a damper on things, but I've spotted some misspellings while reading through the Growing Up section in the Bonus Coverage:
- under Gohan's section in the opening paragraph: As a Saiya-jin and Earthling half-breed, Gohan possesses dormant power
- under SSJ3 Gotenks' section in the caption: he can open a hole in the dimension

Hmm, so according to the Special Attack session, in that final Kamehameha war against Cell, Gohan really was taking ki from Goku...

I fixed the errors, and if you find anything else, let us know. I also tried to make it easier to find the Bonus Coverage, and I added a note to help people out a little. As far as the sections inside the Bonus Coverage section go, I didn't realize people were having problems with that. I assumed it was fine since they're all listed at the top of the page.

Nice. And yeah, I didn't have problems with the sections myself; I was just trying to spot out any possible problems other people may have is all .

Also, the navigation bar at the top of the Bonus Coverage for Daizenshuu 2 lists the previous section as "Daizenshuu 1," but still links appropriately to the Daizenshuu 2 section.
