So We Translated All of Daizenshuu 1 & 2...

Post by Herms » Thu Feb 21, 2008 12:11 am

...me and Hujio did, that is, over at Kanzentai. If you visit that site (which you should), you probably saw Hujio's lastest update, but since I'm a shameless self-promoter I figured that I'd mention it here as well.

How this works is that there are now two pages covering Daizenshuu 1, one that gives a general overview to the book and is more-or-less the same as the old page for Daizenshuu 1, and a new one that features complete translations of the interview with Toriyama, the picture index with background information on every picture in the book, Toriyama's introduction to the book and his farewell to Dragon Ball fans from the very last chapter, the Shenlong Times' roundtable discussion between Toriyama's three editors, the brief message from Jackie Chan over why he's a Dragon Ball fan (and wants to make a live-action movie of it!), some of the latest 12-year old Dragon Ball news (Movie 13 premiers this July! Don't miss Ultimate Battle 22!), and Toriyama's 1-page comic about how he can relax (sort-of) now that Dragon Ball is over. Basically there's a translation of every bit of text of any interest whatsoever.

Anyway, you can read it all here.

Mhahahaha-ha!

edit/update: Hujio has restructured the Daizenshuu 1 bonus coverage page a bit, so the previous link didn't work anymore. Sorry if this confused anyone. Anyway, the way it is now is that by clicking on the new link above, you'll go to a page with the table of contents for the daizenshuu as well as the Toriyama interview. To go to other parts of the daizenshuu, such as the complete spine image or the Shenron Times, just click on their names in the table of contents.

Super Update: Daizenshuu 2 is now almost all up, and the last two sections go up tomorrow. Go here for Hujio's updated, in-depth guide to Daizenshuu 2's contents, and look at the bonus coverage here. Again, each bonus coverage page can be viewed by clicking on the table of contents at the top. This daizenshuu had way more stuff than the first one, which was mostly pictures, but we still managed to get a translation of pretty much everything of interest. For several notes on the contents of Daizenshuu 2 and the translation, go to page 3 of this thread.

Awesome stuff. That's quite a lot of translated text for an art book... not that that's a bad thing.

You guys'll be doing the same for all the other guide books? Aw man... I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been waiting for this. Again, awesome stuff and I'll be patiently waiting for the translations from the rest of the daizenshuu.

Very awesome. I have never read any direct Daizenshuu translations before.

Now, get to work on 2-10!

That is the plan, although I don't know if we'll nesseccarily translate all of the text from every book. Still, we have until...what is it, 2028? to finish.

Well, I'll have to get 8 first. Anyone want to donate it to me? This could be a good system: give me cool stuff and I'll translate it for you!

Edit: On the bonus coverage page, try holding your cursor over the black-and-white "THE END" picture.

I'm guessing that's sarcasm? And if it's not, then what's up with the self-given deadline?

Woah, I can't believe I missed that. If it weren't for that, I would've never noticed that Mr. Popo and Puar were missing from the original sketch (along with ChiChi's little two-fingered goodbye).

"The complete Dragonball Archive... to be completed by 2010!"
Then it was updated to 2038, I think?

Hey this is very nice , Thank you a lot.

but I have a few questions.

Till now , I Understood that Daizenshuu is a Guide for the series. How many daizenshuu's were released total? In what Language? Japanese Only? Also Did they Daizenshuu come with Any of the 5 Dragonboxes? Thanks in advance

This looks like it took a lot of hard work to do and get finihsed in such a short amount of time. I hope you guys don't mind should I go and translate your English tranlsations into Spanish, as long as I give credit where it's due. That being said, what do you want me to say that will tell who did it?

The daizenshuu are Japanese guides of both the manga and anime DragonBall series and were released back in the mid 90's (95 and 96 specifically). There are 10 total volumes; 7 hardcover and 3 supplemental volumes. The supplemental volumes were basically Shueisha's way making some extra money. Though the "TV Animation 3" daizenshuu is actually really good.

The Dragon Boxes weren't released until the 2000's, so the two really have nothing to do with each other.

Yeah, until I set that up that way, I had no idea that Toriyama's original sketch didn't include certain characters. Puar, Uub, and Chi Chi's two fingers are the only things that weren't drawn in the original sketch that made it into the final piece. Though Mr. Popo does actually appears in the sketch, he's just moved to a different location in the final illustration.

Puar is on the original sketch too, on Yamcha's shoulder.

Uh oh, I guess I have competition. :P (I've been working on Daizenshuu translations myself lately, which I think I've mentioned before, but I started with 7 instead.)

Anyway, I don't mean to steal your thunder. Nice job.

It's like a "Spot the Difference" Dragon Ball style!
