Goku's height

I was always wondering how tall he was. Just judging by the show, I always took him to be around 6 and a half feet or so, since he dwarfs everybody else, save a few like Cell or Buu. But I remember seeing once that he was actually quite short, which makes the others like Freeza and Vegeta sound really really short by comparison. I mean, Krillin might end up being like two feet tall.

Also, I recall once seeing a drawing that had a bunch of the different Z characters like Goku and Cell and Buu all lined up next to each other to compare their heights. I was surprised how tall Fat Buu was. Does anyone know that one? I always wanted to get my hands on it.

Daizenshuu 7's bio for Goku says that he is 175 cm (presumably as an adult). The pictures you are thinking of are the height comparision charts used by the anime staff to keep track of all the characters' height in relation to each other. Some are printed (rather small) in Daizenshuu 5, and I'd bet also in the newer anime guides Tekaichi Densetsu and Son Goku Densetsu.

That's so small. ._. Is that even possible? That would make Chaotzu like half a foot tall.

Does it say anything about Cell's height? Also, can you post that picture? I MUST HAVE IT.

If I am calculating correctly, 175 cm would put him at about 5'9".

I wonder if that includes the height of his hair.

Remember, in Japan, 175 cm is not considered short, in the least bit. But yes if you use the ratios given that would make Chaozu very, very short, which doesn't seem too unrealistic or strange considering what else has been seen in the DragonWorld. I also remember in most of the pictures I've seen of the cast Piccolo is even taller than Goku is.

Also, I searched around the web for some of the height chart pictures but I couldn't find any, all that I found was this height comparison between Colonel Silver and another Red Ribbon Army soldier, it points out some other interesting things too. I also noticed that on the web the general consensus on Goku's height is 170 cm, which is supposed to be a quote from Akira Toryama himself, pretty weird, but I guess 5 cm doesn't really matter unless you are planning on making a life-size stature of him or something.

I always thought Goku was like 5'7" with Vegeta at around 5'5" and Krillin at around 5'3". All reasonable heights for adult men in the late eighties early nineties Japan.

This is new to me, Goku is a lot taller than everyone else in the show so I always thought he was past 6 feet, but I guess it makes sense when you think about it because Japanese people tend to be shorter than most other people.

Daizenshuu 7 pegs Chaozu at 138 cm. I'm guessing they're basing this off everyone's respective heights at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai, before short characters like Chaozu and Kuririn began getting their shortness really exagerrated. There's this one title page from during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai that had Goku, Kuririn, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu all standing together, and Chaozu doesn't look too insanely shorter than everyone else. The daizenshuu doesn't give a height for Cell, or most other characters. The only other major character I could find who has a height is Tenshinhan, who it says is 187 cm.

I don't have a scanner, so unfortunately I can't do anything about that height comparision picture right now.

I know that this doesn't give any direct indication to Goku's height, but assuming he was similar to his fathers height, this image from Son Goku Densetsu gives you a loose idea of how tall Goku was, compared to other Saiya-jins:

I've seen that Daizenshuu number for his height thrown around, but I'd still reckon he's taller. But, I'm stubborn like that.

Off-topic, but I'm really, really glad they didn't end up using those designs for Barduck's crew in the actual special.

The only one I like is the beta version of Bardock. Beta Tora looks like that messed up Vegeta when he was in that Namek Village.

I don't mind the original concept design for Bardock that much, but the other Saiya-jin, especially the original idea for Toma, really looks awful.

I just found this picture of Goku and Vegeta during the Majin Buu Arc. Vegeta's head (top of his skull, not his towering hair) comes up to about Goku's chin.

Nah, Vegeta and Krillin would have to be shorter than that. A couple inches doesn't make the diffrences we see. If Goku was 5' 7" Then Vegeta would be 5' 2" and Krillin closer to 4' 5". Krillin's more than a head shorter than Goku and a head is about a foot.

During the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku is smaller than Piccolo, Ten Shin An and even Yamcha, but it seems that his growth isn't over yet.

It's interesting how in that sketch Trunks seems to be a few inches taller than Goten, even though in the anime they are both shown to be nearly identical in height, and this chart was made for reference while drawing the cels for the anime.

Yeah, it's one of the ones from Daizenshuu 5. That scan is actually far bigger than they've got it printed in the book (the whole section on height charts is only one page), so a bigger scan might end up looking really fuzzy.
