AFAIK, Toriyama changed the tone because of a real-world event.
From the Kanzenshuu wiki:
A 9.0–9.1 undersea earthquake occurs in the Pacific Ocean, leading to a tsunami which, among other things, causes the Fukushima nuclear accident. The devastation motivates Akira Toriyama to adjust the script of the upcoming Dragon Ball film to be positive rather than tragic.

https://www.kanzenshuu.com/wiki/Real_Wo ... ision_79-0
And from the interview:
I had made Beerus more of a bad guy, and a kind of story where everyone is taken over and given an evil heart, but Toriyama-sensei in his way apparently felt that, “It’s after the earthquake, so I want it to be, not a tragic story, but a positive one,” and it came to have its present form.

This is me not mentioning Dragon Ball Evolution.

He was very annoyed by that.

He was done with Dragon Ball, for years he’d been very “hands off.” Sending in drawings in the mail and collecting royalty checks.

But, even for a guy who was THAT emotionally checked out… a really bad movie is depressing. He doesn’t like bad movies. Especially bad movies based on HIS work.

So when “BoG” showed up in his inbox, instead of rubber stamping it like normal…. He sent it back, with a new Beerus (now based on his cat) and Whis so that guy had someone to interact with, and the pilaf gang and a bunch of humor and basically a whole new story, with his apologies to the screenwriter.

Imagine being that screenwriter. Imagine you can’t even really be mad because holy crap, Toriyama-sensei is doing Dragon Ball again!!!

Wild times.
…. I forget what I was talking about.

Instead of, like, a magic power or whatever, I wish the story did the legwork to have Beerus just manipulate the characters against one another. That would be more interesting, especially for a second or third telling of the story.

Apparently 20th Century Fox got the international distribution rights for Battle of Gods/Resurrection F/Broly as part of the deal to make Dragonball Evolution. So it wouldn't have effected the extended version airing on Japanese TV, but did mean that Funimation (and the other international distributors) had to license those films from Fox rather than Toei.

Therefore it seems possible that if Beerus had primarily re-cut the films, then the international distribution might have automatically gone to Fox (or rather, 20th Century Studios).

Given that BORUTO and Kimetsu no Yaiba were able to recut their films into episodes, I think the issue with doing that for those 2010s Dragon Ball films is that FOX owns some distribution rights, and that was largely why Dragon Ball Super (2015) was done from scratch—save for designs.

Guys-—welp, this is the darkest version of Beerus we’ve ever gotten. And am I imagining it or is Whis being even creepier and more aloof then ever?

Guys, I’ve been ranting for years about how Beerus an Whis are wildly entertaining charming characters who are also BAD GUYS and are making our boys into BAD PEOPLE by making them stronger in ways that emphasize and reward their worst traits. Goku, who already doesn’t think enough, is thinking even less and literally never worrying about the consequences because someone else will always fix those up for him, because they’re just so impressed with how well he just punched that guy. And Vegeta is lagging behind him because, according to Beerus, that stupid sense of responsibility and desire to atone somehow for the crimes of his and the Saiyans past is LAME AND WRONG, nobody gets what they deserve, nobody cares, everybody dies and if I can kill the Saiyans on a whim and not give a shit whether it was good or bad, then you’ve really got no excuse to care. And here’s a beat down just so you remember this lesson. Becoming a better person is explicitely what is keeping Vegeta from punching harder because he has a CONSCIENCE NOW, and it sucks, it does nothing but hold him back, Beerus kicks his ass to prove it. Vegeta accepts this wisdom, calls himself “unworthy” and dedicates himself to yet another training arc as he works to overcome this handicap.

Maybe Beerus and Whis are making them stronger, but they are making them WORSE in terms of who they are becoming as people. Goku already forgets how many kids he has and what his granddaughter’s name is, so lets make him even more godlike and detached while Gohan gets back to training even though he still hates it but he’s accepted that, as a grown up, sometimes you have to do stuff you don’t want to do. It’s a sad fate for Gohan, but it means Goku can leave Earth to train with the gods again and not worry about it being blown up in his absence and that’s what’s REALLY important here!

…. This is all to say, I think Beerus and Whis are wildly entertaining and very fun characters, and I think we don’t talk enough about how this doesn’t make them Good People. I think them being chill and coming to parties and the like are making everybody overlook that Beerus just slaughtered a whole life-supporting planet because exactly one dude was rude to him. Uninvolved innocent civilians just going about their lives all dead cuz one asshole wouldn’t let the cat have a treat.

Beerus is a bad guy.

We should talk about it more.
…. I forget what I was talking about.

Oh, I misread the original post. I thought BootyCheeksJohnson meant the re-writing from Battle of Gods (the movie) to Super.

That makes sense, but I still feel that the movies didn't need to be retold in the first place.
I don't know how true this is but there's been speculation that Toei was banking on their adaptation of the manga Toriko being a big hit, and when it was cancelled they rushed out Boo Kai for Japanese TV to keep from losing their 9:00 AM timeslot (since Kai 2.0 was originally only going to be given an international release). And a new season of Kai was only going to buy them a limited amount of time.
It's obvious that Super was rushed into production (even some staff on the Broly movie mentioned it), but I was under the assumption that that's why Battle of Gods and Resurrection F (which wasn't even a year old yet) got remade. I don't know what changed their attitude after Super: Broly, but they don't seem to have any interest in adapting that, and neither did V-Jump for that matter.

To me it feels weird when you subtly change the tone of story, but keep the acting (voice recordings) the same. It feels like its being held together by (pretty) ducktape, while putting in less effort than in Kai.

I think it was Toriyama's idea to retell those arcs, actually. Retelling them isn't really an issue, either, because the real issue was that they rushed into production with no planning.

That is true if the anime team were given more time, it would have been better than the movie. Rushing anything out will always turn out bad. So retelling the movies wasn't an issue, but the time giving to the anime team.

Just check Sonic 06, a games wasn't given time to make and to make it worse splitting the developers between two games, when they were on a deadline. That gave the Sonic IP games a terrible reputation.
Then there is Sonic Boom Rise of Lyrics, Sonic Colours Ultimate and Sonic Origins that turned out bad.

That is why in some episode of DBS original the animation was bad and the writing was garbage at times, they given very little time and most likely the higher up got in the way.

That, and they needed more time to write the next actual arcs, so they had to infest BoG and RoF with lots and lots of filler.

That also wouldn't have been an issue if they had just used that original material to make changes to the character arcs in the Toriyama material. It's too bad the entire production was constantly on fire.

I personally think that Battle of Gods was fine, but Resurrection F would've actually benefited from a retelling to flesh out the story. What kind of training did Freeza do to get so strong so quickly? They could've shown Freeza master ki control since his major flaw in Z was that he had couldn't sense ki so he probably never even thought about the spiritual aspect of fighting. What kind of training did Goku and Vegeta do to master god ki in their base forms? They could've done a whole thing to show how different their respective mindsets towards training are with Goku and Vegeta's focus on self improvement as a foil to Freeza's training as a means to an end. And this is just me spitballing, there's so much that could've been done to improve Resurrection F as a story.

I'd have liked to see the emotional process going on for Freeza here, too. What was it like, having to actually train for once? What did it feel like having a relationship with his soldiers in which they were helping him train? How does that contrast with Son Goku and Vegeta? What room did Freeza still have to grow and learn from? The story arc could have really highlighted the flaws to Freeza's mindset and how his attitude basically led to him walking right back into a trap of his own making by being so easily dispatched by Goku and Vegeta.

Like, framing the arc as "Freeza falls face-first into the shit" could have been used to highlight similar flaws in Goku and Vegeta for them to overcome, but could then also be used as a stronger basis for when Freeza comes back for the Tournament of Power. A writer needs to get those ideas out there and sell them strongly because it'll absolutely pay off in the end.

A minor animation error was corrected in the Disney+ version, Krillin's hand wasn't fully drawn.

Latecomer here as I only have Netflix so had to wait a few more days to watch it lol
But I don't think I'll regret that as there's nothing that surprised me personally.

I mean, from the visual part, I have absolutely no complaints, it's what I expected, I think it's the best modern Yamamuro style has ever looked, I thought the parts of the old version would look off in between the new and fully redrawn parts, but no, they work really well too especially thanks to the filter and addition of the "Shintani-ish" rough brush for the lines, very pleasant colors with the amazing shots of the cosmos, so I believe I can finally say that DBS looks aesthetically a beautiful anime, something I couldn't say for the original prior to the ToP.

So just I as said in a previous post, I expected that the visual part would be the best thing about this remake. The rest? Yeah I'm really not impressed, the removal of the filler didn't make me sad, but since it was filler that I did enjoy, its absence doesn't make me happier either, so I'm indifferent towards this decision, actually I'm indifferent towards anything they did here, regardless if it was changed, removed or added, the faster pacing didn't really improve anything here to me, everything was just okay.

Actually there was something that seriously bothered me and I already expected this would happen, the "new scenes", I mean, not from a visual perspective because again I think they look amazing. The problem is their lack of dialogue, which, holy shit, these scenes made me strongly feel it, the lack of new recording, I couldn't watch them without feeling that there was something wrong (or missing), I could feel the limitation, the total of dependence on the old recordings and having to edit them, it was a very weird experience to me, and if I continue to feel this in every episode it's definitely going to be a major if not the biggest negative aspect I'll have for this series, maybe it's just me, but I just can't deny that the entire episode felt off to me due to this detail, maybe if I didn't watch the original DBS I wouldn't feel this way? Maybe, but I don't know, I don't watch the first episode of the original anime since 2024 I believe, I wasn't really with the voice acting in my memory, and it still gave me this feeling, and if it's limited to this lack of new recording, with new scenes being silent, then I believe I can safely (and sadly) continue with my expectation that nothing regarding the story will be fixed or improved, plot holes will continue, concepts will remain unexplained. I don't feel less "Goofy Goku" or more "Menacing Beerus" personally, but I'm fine with that as I don't really care about making them more or less like their characterizations in the old anime, I was more interested to see other things improved like how Beyond God is explored, which probably won't be happening at all as it would demand new lines to be recorded.

Other than this, I'm quite mixed about the Daima inspired structure, having no eyecatch is lazy, but I really like having an actual scene in the beginning after the opening instead of a recap, then the title. But I'll for sure miss the narrator and the titlecard with a background. Don't like removing the next episode preview, that has been changed to having scenes of the next episode in the ending aparently.

Also, the ending? Holy cow... I'm not kidding, this is the worst ending in the entire Dragon Ball franchise, I mean, I don't think the song is bad, but it not being amazing also doesn't help it, now god lord, the visuals, the CGI Shenlong, that is beyond lazy, seriously what the hell went wrong? Something must've happened there, I can't believe someone looked at it and thought "yeah this looks great as a ending". The endings from DB movies 1 & 2, Z movies 2, 5-8, 10-13, Fukkatsu no F and the two TV specials were infinitely better than this in my opinion and those endings were nothing more than compilations of scenes from the movies or the anime, some them even static.
I really, really have no idea why they decided to make it that way, it's an absolute contrast to the opening, which unlike many said to me both the music and visuals are amazing, I can't understand this decision, the original Super had like more than 10 endings all of them with interesting visuals, massive downgrade.

Anyway, of course this was just the first episode and I know I sounded quite negative, but I do think it's a good first episode and I believe it would've worked quite for me if I didn't watch the original Super. The problem is that I did watch the original, so it's impossible for me to avoid comparisons, if I disliked the original super it would've been very different but given how I like it, I'm just nearly completely apathic to the changes they applied here aside for the visuals and other minor details like classic SFX.

But if I continue with the same feeling throughout the entire show, then, again aside from the visuals, it will for sure succeed in being just like Kai to me, the "enhanced version" of the Old Z anime which I'm just indifferent towards, it doesn't replace Z to me, and from this first episode I don't feel this is going to replace 2015 Super to me either, it's a anime that I really liked despite the flaws and unappealing visuals for the most part, at least this version did indeed enhance that aspect a lot, but visuals alone aren't enough to make me excited much less if I have problems with the lack of new voice acting, and I'm usually not happy with this kind of product (remakes & remasters) so I'll be pretty much biased throughout the entire run as my excitement decreased more and more since the second trailer came out, at least I controlled my expectations and they were exactly what I just saw (except for the ending, I guess my mind may be too limited to imagine something as bad as it), it's not what I wanted but I understand and accept why it exists and why it's the way it is (except for the voice acting, if it's not going to have any new dialogue), that said I believe I'll be completely fine with having to wait an extra week to watch a new episode.

Also i'm surprised if it's true that it really crashed down Crunchyroll's servers, I think that's crazy especially for being the remaster of a anime that is available on those platforms, if it continues to be a hit like this til the end then I think I'll have to change my mind about them only doing this show to buy time and the enhanced Zamasu and ToP arcs not happening lol.

Thank you for pointing that, I really like Sumitomo's work and I'm glad he's back and I did feel there were new tracks not heard before but I wasn't sure about it.
I think Early Super had a music placement problem that it overused some of his tracks that weren't so good, something that could've been avoided if they switched more often between the new tracks for that series and the tracks from Kai 2014, something that was only done in the ToP, prior to that a lot of the episodes were pretty much Super tracks only, so I'm glad here they are using his Kai tracks from the beginning.
I'm also glad that they decided to use tracks from Battle of Gods, which I also didn't understand why it wasn't done in the original, Kai 2014 used music from that movie, so why not 2015 Super? I think that's a good sign as we may end up hearing Fukkatsu no F tracks as well, as they were never used in anything else but the movie.

If they don't cut him, I believe they'll simply have him appear with no dialogue at all, it was done in Daima, he appears there but doesn't say a single word.

Thank you for reminding that, so maybe there's still hope I guess? Still think this first episode wasn't a good indicative though...

I can't understand that either, really wonder why they wasted time with that, specially by having the extra eyes and arms, like I said before I believe this remake will be heavily criticized for the content that they decided to add, change, remove and keep, this scene being a example of one that a lot of people like you will say it doesn't make sense why they kept and changed. Well that was at least within my expectations, not that it's a good thing lol
Luso Saiyan wrote: Tue Oct 13, 2026 4:46 am
They aren't defused from the start in the manga either, they just defuse at the end of the arc, and by trying to match Toriyama's view and Battle of Gods obviously they wouldn't change that. I do have to agree though because of a detail, they could've easily replaced Kibitoshin by Nahare without recording any dialogue as both share the same single voice actor due to the fusion not having the double voices lol.

As for the colors, I did say this in a previous post, it would probably demand a full remake, I don't think they would be able to edit the colors for every single frame so reusing old footage restricted them from doing this I believe. They would also need to change Kid Trunks' hair to blue.

I mentioned this in some of my latest posts, and I actually think it's the reason why we are getting this remake now instead of the Moro arc, I believe their desire would be to have DBS TGP already starting this year this month, but they realized they would need more time as now they are worried about the quality of a seasonal anime. Daima started this new format, and I believe that due to contractual factors, they need to deliver a new Dragon Ball anime series every year, specifically one that starts at the ending of a year, and ends at the beginning of the next year just like Daima, so they had to do this remake to buy time while they can't deliver TGP, which will probably be ready for next October.

That's why I also think it's very likely that we may not get enhanced versions of the Zamasu and ToP arcs in the future, because it was never their intention to remaster 2015 DBS in its entirety, or else they would've made a remake from scratch instead of just enhancing the first 3 arcs of the old anime then jump straight to animating from scratch a manga exclusive arc. Well, it's my hypothesis.

While it's not confirmed that they won't be doing enhanced versions of Zamasu and ToP in the future, it's clearly not in their plans, and I believe the reason for it is what I said above, I think they were never interested in enhancing Super in its entirety and this remake is purely being a excuse for them to say that they have a new Dragon Ball anime the year after Daima ended because maybe they are stuck to a seasonal anime contract, but what they wanted to deliver was actually The Galactic Patrol, but now that they're worried about the quality they had to delay it to 2027. So this remake works as a pothole patch. They won't need to do a remake of the Zamasu and ToP arcs after 2027 as after finishing with Moro maybe they'l go straight to Granola instead of revisiting Zamasu and ToP. Well at least to me it makes sense to think about this possibility.

I hope we get Zamasu and ToP too, things are already quite confusing as of now, having half the series redone and the other half not... irks me irrationally lol.
Servers crashed for the fourth retelling of the same arc, imagine how hard those servers will crush for redone and enhanced Ultra Instinct awakening... it would be stupid for them to waste an opportunity like that.

I really enjoyed this first episode, it actually felt like a good, solid beginning for this new series. I'd have done just a few things differently, like adding a recap at the beginning, akin to the one in the movie, and merging Beerus's scenes in two (have the dinner scene and then instead of destroying half the planet, destroy the whole planet, using footage from the second scene with the dinosaur). Other than that, pretty good!

That said, I don't care for the opening AT ALL. Say what you will about Chouzetsu Dynamic (it is pretty bad), but it still feels a bit Dragon Ball-ish. This one is just generic anime song #57. Any Dragon Ball game intro song is better than this.
