He also stated that in addition to his low pay, he disliked the screaming aspect of dubbing the character, did he not? I admit that it doesn't necessarily mean he hated the role, but it certainly couldn't have been something he was entirely happy about, correct?

Here's the exact quote from the interview:

Q: Why did you leave the show? Was this your decision or someone else's? The generally accepted reason is that you could no longer do the show because of "other commitments," and I'm wondering if that's the truth.

A: Without blowing my own horn too hard, I'm very good at dubbing (speedy). But dubbing work is grueling. It's quite likely to sit in a dark booth for a full 8 hour day, grinding out multiple episodes of a given show. That's what DBZ was like. Honestly it all came down to $$. Especially when the project moved to the Ocean Group. They are notorious for chiseling and paying fractions of what actor's are paid elsewhere. To their credit, that's how they get the work. The Ocean group and I don't really see eye to eye. But I simply got tired. I drew the line on all dubbing work after that (at Ocean that is). Without going into the gory details, basically I asked for about $250 more per episode - and that's CANADIAN $$!! (I think that works out to about .29 cents US. no?). I guess my "other commitments" where to anything else willing to pay what I'm worth - and my sanity, of course.

Q: In your initial message to me, you said that we (the fans) should "let FUNimation know about it" if we preferred your work to that of your successors. Any particular reason why you said this? Are you indicating that you would like to return to the show?

A: Hey, I love to work. And as I said before, my relationship with Barry and FUNimation was good. I just think it's cheesy when actors are replaced because of what amounts to chump change. I mean I wasn't pulling a "Seinfeld" by any means. They also realized I was prepared to walk. I could make more $$ washing windows for goodness sake!

Nothing about screaming that I can discern.

Hmm, I seem to have forgotten that. Isn't there another VA who did Goku?
There was also Peter Kalemis (2nd Saban/Ocean voice), but with the sole fluke exception of Movie 2 (where he was inexplicably fucking amazing), he kinda blew.
Agreed, the voice acting for Goku in that movie brought me to tears.

Odd, I could have sworn that one of the Goku voice actors complained about the screaming aspect of the show. If that's false, then my bad. Just my memory screwing things up.

I could take his "dubbing work is grueling" comment as tiny evidence in my favor, but that'd be just grasping at straws. Best that I just quit while I'm behind.

So... them season sets, huh?

I know that Vic Mignogna has said he hates VA'ing Broly cause it kills his voice, maybe you were thinking of him?

Sonny Strait (the VA for Kuririn) has made popular jokes about anime voice acting "killing him", maybe that's what you were thinking of.

No, I remember hearing that as well about Mr. Corlett; something about how screams (the harder work) got you less $$. I don't recall where I heard it, though...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
OK here's a question that perhaps someone here will know, on the FUNImation releases for Mexico do they have English subtitles on them? Or for that matter the Japanese audio track? I can't find any information on them at all other than that they are in Spanish. I'm aware that they are the Ultimate Uncuts (which I recently just bought all of for 2-4 bucks a pop, brand new) and will continue on I found they first new cover for the releases FUNImation screwed us out of, here: http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Princ ... 974&sr=1-4. I'm just trying to figure out whether or not I should buy those damnable first two sets or not, I really don't want to because they truly are awful. And will look rather stupid sitting on a shelf with all of the Freeza and "Boo era" singles next to it (with any luck all be able to find the Cell single releases soon enough).

Amazon says the DVDs include the Mexican dub and original Japanese version.

As for English subtitles, doesn't seem likely since the boxes hint that it's targeted towards Spanish-speaking audiences. So it would be Spanish subtitles.

Yeah, Broli kills Vic Mignogna (so he doesn't do it much as cons) but Schemmel says he took breathing classes for his screaming (and boy does it show). Heck, Schemmel's audtion story for Goku is hilarious in of itself. He didn't know Son Gokû was the main character until he was two or three episodes into Season Three and he wanted to voice Ginyu.

By the way was it ever confirmed whether or not he chose not to redo Season Three?

I heard he didn't want to redo Season 3 for a couple of reasons.

1. He was happy with his work on it.
2. He was going through a divorce (I think)
3. Was Basically poverty stricken and living out of his car
4. It brought back bad memories

I heard that somewhere, I don't have a source though.

Waaaay back in the Season 3 thread, someone posted an interview where he talked about it.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I can sympathize with voice actors. Back when I was really into voice acting, and I was trying to develop some of my voices, I talked in several different voices for maybe an hour, and my throat hurt so bad from doing attack yells and all kinds of other stuff, and that was only for an hour, these guys spend up to 8 hours doing it. That sucks.

Ian Corlett complained about the screaming in an interview with Trevor Devall.

Basically, they weren't counting any of the screaming as actual lines. In that show, there was a lot of screams, and all things considered, they were being paid per line. So, basically... he was getting jipped for the screaming lines. It was unfair bullshit.

You are correct sir. But the guy said he played adult Goku at some point. And I'm sure I know all the English VA's Goku ever had.
