It is indeed a long "O" sound that starts the word, but your spelling all depends upon your own personal preference for expressing long "vowel sounds" from Japanese. For example, I don't write the main character's name as "Gokuu" (or "Gokû"), but simply as "Goku". Of course, I (and others) aren't always completely consistent about usage (I do write "Oozaru" and not "Ozaru" or "Ôzaru"), but yep.DBHighDefinition wrote:Shouldn't the title be spelt "Oozaru" Instead of "Ozaru"? Or is that the proper Rōmaji way of spelling it?
For the record, "on-topic" for this discussion thread would relate either to the original subject (a possible transformation for Goku in the movie), or also how to handle this and other threads. Your comments are welcome.

Are you people really shocked that it looks nothing like a giant ape beast thingy? Piccolo is freakin white! Well whatever, this is really the only thing we have to go by of what we are assuming is a final product. Even if it is... the whole movie is a little out of whack, why would you think the one thing they'd get right was a giant ape. It looks like they are going for more of an alien type transformation then anything else. Kinda creepy, kinda different.
This is obviously not the DragonBall we know. This is going to be a totally different way of telling the DragonBall story. I think it's interesting seeing a different side. It's not like they are erasing the anime or the manga in favor of this... Those will always be there. So relax.
But whatever, if you hate this movie that's OK. We are all DragonBall fans. We all like the series for different reasons. But this... this is something completely new for all of us. We have no idea where this is going to go. We all should just take what we see with a little more of an opened mind. I think the time for expecting an exact translation from anime\manga to live action is over. We know it's going to be very different.
(Sorry for ranting, don't really know where I was going... until I stopped)

The team behind the movie obviously have a lot of creative influence and it seems like they're just using Dragonball as a slight reference and source but putting their own ideas in to it, hence the lack of monkey, and I can accept that.
Honestly though, just add fur to that thing and it'll be good enough for me. I'd say it looks a bit TOO alien-like but hey, that's what Goku is right?
Could stand to be a bit taller though...

How exactly will Goku transform anyway? Does it stay faithful and be a full moon transformation, or what? I know he doesn't have a tail, so i'm just curious how that would work.

Does Goku not have a tail in the sense that Saiyans don't have tails in the movie, or simply that it's been cut off like his eventually is in the original? If the later, than maybe his tail will instantly regrow at just the right moment, like it did for Gohan during the fight with Vegeta.

I'm ignoring the drama llamas, so sorry if what I'm saying was already mentioned:
We know for a fact that this is not the martial arts sci-fi epic of DBZ, rather the movie is a loose re-imagining of the martial arts fantasy DB of the Piccolo saga. We also know that the Dragonballs have the ability to "bind mankind." Lastly, so far we know Goku is the chosen one "just because."
Since there's no Saiyans and lots of Demons in this movie, "Oozaru" may just be super-strong demons that the DBs will turn its wielders into (Goku is given a DB on his 18th birthday, afterall) if Piccolo has his way. It wouldn't work to say Goku is the chosen one simply because, "by the way, he's an alien who transforms into a King Kong howler monkey." In a years long show, something like that got used to expand and develop the show. In a 2-hr movie, it would be a randomly useless Deus Ex Machina that would make the film laughable.
My thoughts: worth waiting to see how it pans out. This isn't a live-action retelling of anything DB, which seems to be what people both want and expect. Rather, it's an entirely new martial arts fantasy movie loosely inspired by Pilaf and Piccolo saga DB. It's the DB equivalent of the live-action Transformers.

I've been wondering about that for quite awhile. To my knowledge, it hasn't been established one way or the other yet.Herms wrote:Does Goku not have a tail in the sense that Saiyans don't have tails in the movie, or simply that it's been cut off like his eventually is in the original? To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
Hmmm... Maybe this pic is therefore a "new" transformation; full moon = Oozaru, whereas solar eclipse = mysterious hybrid?Herms wrote:Does Goku not have a tail in the sense that Saiyans don't have tails in the movie, or simply that it's been cut off like his eventually is in the original? Ah, I didn't notice the full moon. I thought it was a different stage of the eclipse before.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:You might have somthing there. I wouldn't be surprised if "Oozaru" is the name of the demon derived from the eclipse, whereas an SSJ knock-off is called "Saiyajin," which is what Goku will become when exposed to a Full Moon.

If that's "mid-transformation" then it's still wrong.
For starters, that thing going on on the top of his head should be formed through hair, not his own skin or skull. It ultimately looks like really obvious rubber with the way they have it set up. Next is if they're going for a monkey/ape look, monkeys and apes don't have fish-colored skin.
Just about every time Goku's transformation is in progress, his pupils disappear the very moment his body begins to shift. Whatever is around his eyes doesn't look natural, nor looks like that of a monkey or ape. Also, the jaw should have already started to bulge out as his nose changed shape. At this point, Goku's body should also begin bulking up (and growing heavy amounts of fur).
So what does Goku look like here? A cross between some sort of fish, monkey, vampire thing.

Also thought I'd bring this to attention. An interview with Joon Park about the movie.
Anyone else kinda...face palm at that like I did?I entered the audition wearing a hat and shorts, and as soon as the director looked at me, he said “You are Yamcha.” I still can’t believe it. I won’t appear the first 25% of the movie, but I will later on.

Well, I think the mid-transformation theory goes hand in hand with the CG fur theory. In which case, they would need to mold something in the shape of the skull. Let's be honst, Ozaru have big heads. They aren't gonna just gel a massive foot-long clump of hair in the rough shape of an Ozaru skull.Tsukento wrote:If that's "mid-transformation" then it's still wrong.

Even if they use CG for the hair, the head shouldn't be forming the way it is.Onikage725 wrote:Well, I think the mid-transformation theory goes hand in hand with the CG fur theory. Re: Live Action Ozaru Goku leaked?

It seems like quite a lot of cranial detail for something they'd intend to cover up with CGI fur to me.
I'd go with the mid-transformation theory, or just throw it in the fucked-up-barrel with the rest of this movie's... uh... "original" twists on the story.
Only time will tell.
