Very true, most people at that age have the "Whistle", whenever they talk and not not sure if your voice goes a bit higher, or lower. But, yeah.

Sure, Yuri Lowenthal does it, but alas...
That's a good point, but I use these voices (High-Kid Goku, Deep-Ryuk, etc.) everyday, just so I don't get rusty. But wait, don't males' voices usually hit their adult voice at 15? I think, I've might have already hit that point.

Holy crap, how can you keep a scream out for about 45 seconds? I know you can take lessons on it but, that's insane.

Holy WOW; is that the one that KO'd him in the recording booth?
That was insane.

Okay, so I was watching Season 3 yesterday, and one thing I noticed is that during the SSJ1 Goku vs. Freeza portion, Schemmel was actually decent. Schemmel's Goku at the end of the Frieza saga was LEAGUES better than in the Ginyu saga or the beginning of the fight with Frieza.

And for Vegeta, I think Sabat's current voice fits him perfectly. Just watch Season 2 and the Season 3 redub. It's the perfect voice for him.

For King Kai, I think it fits. He's goofy, has a pet monkey, tells horrible jokes that only he laughs at, won't train anyone unless they can make him laugh, and catching a monkey and grasshopper are what he considers tough training. What do you expect? Zeus?

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I dunno. I expect to be able to actually understand the honorable (yet wacky) character.

Yes. I expect Zues. I expect him to be a very powerful master, who has deep wisdom to give. That's why it's funny when he looks like a cockroach and has a pet monkey.

Without the serious voice, he's just a weird guy.

Agreed. This was my point earlier in the thread.

Schemmel makes a good Son Goku, in my opinion. He also does a decent imitation of the wacky American dub Kaio. However, for what I expect Kaio to be, I think someone else should have been cast as Kaio.

I guess we just have different views on it. Personally, I like both his Japanese and English voices, but in different ways.

But he's also wise, a God (of sorts) and a great martial-arts master. I don't think that the one who created the technique which helped save the universe half-a-dozen times (namely, the Genki-Dama) should sound like a retard with a lisp.

Yes, Joji Yamami as Kaio-sama sounds wise, wizened and kind of grandfatherly, but he could also be silly and goofy, too.

It's called range. ;)

Agreed. The first English Kaio (was it Corlett?) I thought was miscast, but tolerable. Schemmel's Kaio just sounds to me like a sub-par imitation.

I actually, in general, feel that way about most of the S3 voices. There are many later voices I liked, but the original crop sounded like sub-par imitations of the first cast. And in a number of cases, the first cast wasn't the best fit to begin with (Freeza and Kaio, for example). Two big ones for me were Zarbon and Jheese as well.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Well, for Zarbon, Chris Sabat eventually begin using an entirely different voice, rather than the Australian one.

I actually have to admit I do dig his current Zarbon voice.

Yeah, it's good, although it actually sounds a lot more like Yamcha trying to be sexy.

Actually the first King Kai was Don Brown who also did Pilaf and Garlic Jr. Jaken from Inuyasha and Elder Ham from Hamtaro. (Yes I actually watched a few eps of Hamtaro).

Though with the Zeus comment, it made me picture King Kai chasing after women and doing what he can to get a little somethin' somethin'.

My problem with Schemmel is that he just doesn't capture the "child trapped in a man's body" aspect of Goku as well as Nozawa. His Goku just sounds too adult. Even though Goku grows up throughout the series he essentially remains a child in personality and to me Nozawa's voice and performance just captures that better than Schemmel's.

And I agree with whoever has said it, his Kaio is crap-o-rama.

I kinda agree. His Cell and Buu saga Goku, while good, were too adult-like. You should really watch the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai or the Saiyan and Namek sagas, where he goes with the high-pitched voice.

Eh, Sabat's Vegeta sounds like he's talking through a grunt which has the effect of making him sound like he's constipated all the time. Not really fitting for a prince that thinks he's better than everyone in my opinion.

Ryo Horikawa sounds smoother and more natural than Sabat.

I've gotta agree. Even spot-checking some redubbed scenes, Sabat still sounds too forced. It's a syndrome a lot of FUNi's actors suffer from, but it's more apparent with the smoother sounding people in DragonBall (Kaio, Piccolo, Vegeta, etc.).

Vegeta is the ultimate ego maniac, his voice in Japanese conveys it. In English, no so much.
