Journey to the West is just a bastardization of the historical pilgrimage of Xuanzang!NeptuneKai wrote:The manga's just a bastardization of Journey to the West!

Re: Dragon Ball Z Being Re-edited and Re-dubbed for HDTV
As a fan of the manga, I would actually rather see an abridged version where they cut out the senseless standing around, the majority of the filler episodes (there's a couple I really like!), the stock-footage that they play to drag out fights, the random crap added in to fights that gets a nice big Retcon Punch an episode or two later (see Trunks vs. Perfect Cell and compare it to the manga version), and other such things.Yi Xing Long wrote:I highly doubt they would be able to get anywhere near 100 episodes just by cutting out filler episodes and scenes with nothing but standing around. If that's all they did then I would expect somewhere in the range of 200 episodes. But really, they may not be cutting anything at all. I would rather have them not cut anything actually. If they want to do an abridged series with completely re-done animation and art direction, that's fine, but there is no need to bastardize the original TV series.Kendamu wrote:I'm guessing that they can cut out a lot of the filler and standing around and probably get somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 episodes without losing anything that was in the manga.
Of course, as stated in previous posts, that's just a rumor from 2ch or something.
There's actually a whole lot than can be cut out that wasn't in the manga. Roughly 100 episodes doesn't seem all that off to me. If they don't cut it down, I'll still watch it. But, if they do cut it down, I'll watch it religiously.

Yeah, less flashbacks would definitely be a bonus, if that what Kendamu is talking about.
I mean, after Cell returned, they had a flashback of something that literally happened like 3 minutes before.

Probably because it has to be distinguished from DBZ. Technically they're two different products. Though I don't think this is the best way to distinguish it. Take Metal Gear Solid. The remake on the GCN was called "Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes." They didn't change it to "Metal Gear: Twin Snakes." If, for whatever reason, they want to call it Dragon Ball Kai, it should at least have been "Dragon Ball Z: Kai" or something to remind fans that it is DBZ (not that most couldn't figure it out anyway).Pain wrote:I'm wondering why the hell they'd rename it.B wrote:Dragon Ball KAI?
Lolwut?
Of course, Kai has the letter "A" in it, and if you play with the letter"K" you can make it into the letter "F" and ... oh my god... they're making Dragon Ball AF ... I.

Can we get some screen shots of those episodes to compare what kind of cropping/extending we're getting?SSj Kaboom wrote:Here's the picture:

The only part of Dragon Ball that's even loosely based on Journey to the West is the very beginning (volume 1 and 2).NeptuneKai wrote:Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:The anime is a bastardization of the original manga in the first place!Yi Xing Long wrote:but there is no need to bastardize the original TV series.
The manga's just a bastardization of Journey to the West!
As for the anime being a bastardization of the manga, that is ridiculous. It is an adaption of the manga. But when you take a TV series that already exists and chop it up, add new audio and present it as "refreshed," I would say that's a bastardization. As long as they don't completely change the pacing and cut out good filler scenes, I am fine with it.

It's only a bastardization if it's bad. *cough*cough*Funi dub*cough*DB Evolution*coughYi Xing Long wrote: As long as they don't completely change the pacing and cut out good filler scenes, I am fine with it.

I think it is absolutely fricking hilarious how the show will be called Dragonball Kai when the guy who first brought us confirmation of this (and will be one of our best sources for first hand summaries and reviews) is called kei17!

Why am I not at all surprised that you are excited for a "cut-down" *cough*abridged*cough* version of the series?KaiserNeko wrote:...I'd really, really appreciate a cut-down version of the show, myself. It's not like whatever they could cut you haven't already seen before or couldn't very easily see again...

I think SJ was being lazy and that TOEi will actually stretch the picture.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.
