Throwing my hat into the 'real fan' ring; shelling out cash means nothing, it's your involvement in the thing that matters. I'm not a bigger fan or more of a "real fan" of Futurama because I have the DVDs. I'd posit that nimerjm's little friend with the pencil set is a "true fan" regardless of the pencil set. His fandom wouldn't be any different if he never had it, or if he had a hundred of them.

I think you're a "true fan" if you watch and enjoy the show. If you get pleasure out of watching your favorite Z warrior slam somebody into a mountain you're a "true fan."

If you do nothing but watch bootleg merchandise or download episodes you're not a very well behaved fan and you're hurting the franchise but nonetheless you're a "true fan."

On humans, Earthlings, and animal people: Daizenshuu 4 and 7 divides Earthlings into three types: Ningen-gata Chikyuujin/Human-type Earthlings, like Bulma, Doubutsu-gata Chikyuujin/Anime-type Earthlings, like Puar and the King, and Monsutaa-gata Chikyuujin/Monster-type Earthlings, like Pilaf and Baba's fighters. It's also worth pointing out that throughout the series aliens are referred to as ningen as well. So the animal people are Earthlings, but not human, while Vegeta is a human, but not an Earthling.

On sama: It's actually not quite true that all characters refer to Kami as "Kami-sama": Piccolo always call him just "Kami", since he hates him and all (Garlick Jr. is the same), and Kaio always just calls him "Kami" since he outranks him and therefore doesn't have to show him respect. Kami always refers to himself as simply "Kami", since he's not completely stuck-up. Guidebooks and other sources also don't always stick the sama on.

One of the things that bugs me about the Viz translation is that they're inconsistent with having characters calling him "Kami" or "Kami-sama". There's lots of times where they'll have characters like Goku or Kuririn, who always refer to him as "Kami-sama", just call him "Kami", and then elsewhere they'll have Piccolo call him "Kami-sama", when like he never, ever calls him that in the original.

One of the things in the Super Exciting Guide: Story Volume is that for the section on Goku's various friendships, for each character it lists what name they use for Goku.

Good point; we never mentioned it. godofchaos, could you dig up that document you had, or at least explain its origin?
I did tell you what it was from when I originally told you it. Funimation's May Sales Book, as a few bullet points (didn't mention the last past, as it doesn't matter).

I was looking at the DBO: Aka Dragonball Online. I just have one question....
Why can you not make an Saiyan? I know at the end Z, and GT that Goku's family, and Vegeta's family is all that left. But in new special on Fuji Vegeta has younger brother. So.... Can someone tell me what's going on with that?

I notice that all the other races are there, but no Saiyan/half Saiyan/ 1.8 Saiyan nothing is there.

This is my last though, If there are no saiyan in the game, would that make it just Dragon Quest Online?
This takes me back early 97. I remember those days

I remember watch Dragonball on UPN or was in fox back in 1987. It air 4:00am in the morning.

You know how the human characters became useless because they weren't Saiyajin? That's probably why it's not a playable race. Probably a good move, really.

But besides that, 2 or 3 Saiyajin, after 200 years, that bloodline's going to be pretty thin. Like 1/256th Saiyajin blood? Even if they're around it's probably not worth mentioning.

Is there any way that we can see this? Like a scan or a text version. I'd really like to share this information but I don't want it to be a "some guy on the internet said..."

It's meant as a sales sheet, and I'm not aware of having permission to give out copies of it (this isn't a case of me having found information in a public area, or someone mentioning it to me and asking me not to say they gave me info, this was actually given to me BY Funimation, so I'm not quite sure of any legal issues of posting pieces of it).

Plus, even if I did, there's nothing to keep anyone from saying I just made it myself in Photoshop.

Well, are you at least able to give a reason why FUNimation gave it to you?

I'm not doubting you. Just curious. And I don't mean to be redundant. I know I asked you a similar question in a PM. But I'm curious about this specific thing.

I understand if you'd rather not share that information though.

If people choose not to believe me that's up to them.

My last page said what I felt like saying on the subject.

I honestly have no interest in proving myself beyond what I've already said.

I am not choosing to disbelieve you, I have no intention of biting the hand that feeds either. You have an excellent track record with this type of stuff. But I don't think it's unreasonable to ask why you have this information. If it's a confidentiality issue, I understand. But other than that, I don't understand why you wouldn't share that.

I don't really know what a true fan is, but I know what isn't.

Someone that isn't a real fan of the series is someone that comes up to you after you've spent your hard earned money on some official releases, and asks to borrow them so they can rip and copy them, and then calls you a cheapskate when you refuse.

I'm the kind of person that gets this a lot, I love collecting the things I love, and whether it be Dragonball, Farscape or Futurama, people walk by my collection and ask "can I borrow such and such for a day to burn" and then act all offended when I refuse, despite my reasoning of "I bought the damn thing, why the fuck should I give it to you for free?".

Maybe I'm selfish that way, but I don't work hard all week to buy things and then give them away for free.

I would tend to agree that if you steal stuff you're not acting in a very fanlike manner. I don't think you need to buy things to be a fan, nor that stealing STOPS one from being a fan. But, one who steals things of their fandom isn't acting very fanlike. Meaning its bad behaviour for a fan, but I can't exactly say it makes them less a fan (though in this case I'd like to), just an asshole.

I have sort of mixed feelings on the whole "bootleg" thing. I guess I feel it depends on your situation, such as age and everything.

Example: When I was little, Sonic the Hedgehog meant the world to me (Yeah... I say when I was little, when I have Sonic Rush paused in front of me  )... I would draw pictures, I even once started writing a story where I teamed up with him to fight evil, but I didn't really have the chance to play the games, until somebody gave me a CD with a bunch of the old games burnt on it. The fact that it was burned meant nothing to me. All I cared about was that I would finally get to play the games I'd wanted to since I was little (this was when I was like 10). In a situation like that, I don't think it makes you any less of a fan.

Thinking about this post, I don't actually feel like it contributes much... but I'll post it anyway. :?
