A Couple of Forum Ideas

Post by Innagadadavida » Sat Jun 27, 2009 4:12 pm

VegettoEX mentioned that he was planning on upgrading the forum a little when it moves over to the new server (whenever that might be), so I thought I'd give a couple of suggestions for some features I'd like to see on the upgraded forum.

First of all, video tags would be great. Particularly for YouTube videos and the likes. Embeddable videos will prevent us from having to go to another page and it saves us a little time making the Daizex Experience that much more enjoyable :D.

Spoiler tags that hide content until the user decides to view it. Not that we really have to worry much about spoilers at this point, but they can be used for other things as well. Things like what caused an argument on the Dragon Ball: Season 1 thread about Bulma's Bazookas.

And last but not least, if at all possible, personal word filters. A couple people, including myself, don't care much for the word filter. Circumventing it to try to talk about dub name changes, and other topics like that, can be a real pain sometimes. If we had the option to disable the word filter, or even add our own custom word filters exclusive to our own accounts, I think everybody would be happy.

EDIT: OH YES! And one more. Sometimes when somebody posts a link or a picture that's too large it stretches the entire thread which makes reading other posts a chore. Some forums have each post as an individual element rather than another row in a table. I don't know if that kind of hack is applicable in PHPbb, but I'd say it's worth checking out.

How about just ditching phpBB and going vBulletin?
Or is serious MONIES required for that?

Video tags will only slow down users on dial up not to mention are pretty pointless when it comes to the grand scheme of things. It doesn't kill anyone to click a link to watch a video.

The word filter isn't going to be dropped. Mike has his reasons for them, he wants to educate, and frankly I agree. If stick around long enough you get use to them, if you're not...you probably won't even know they exist. Discussion on the subject is more distracting then its actual prescene, I've come to find.

They won't slow users on dial up any more than a large picture. After all, the videos don't autoplay.

The word filter can come preloaded with words to "educate." They can be removed if the user wishes.

It'd just cause confusion if one person had one name up and others had another. If the name itself is the topic then it's easy enough to circumvent the filter, otherwise there's no need to show the wrong names.

Well, okay. Now that that's out of the way, how about those other suggestions, guys!? :D

Not a bad idea, and easy to do, but low-priority.

Again, easy to implement, but not necessarily important enough to get done ASAP.

That might be a bit harder to do perfectly, but a simple overflow:hidden; would keep long images from stretching out the page.

Oh yeah, well I don't mean to say that these are top priority. It's more of a "Hey, as long as you're going to spend some time under the hood, check this out..."

Also placing 3 stickies for DBKai episodes, and then unstickey when new episodes air. There's no reason to have stickies of all the aired episodes so far, soon the whole page will be filled with them.

Is there a way to make the episodes a sub-subforum?

I don't see how this would cause any confusion. User #1 has the word filter set so that all instances of the name Tien appear as Tenshinhan. User #2 has the filter set up so that all instances of the name Tenshinhan appear as Tien.

User #1 posts "My favorite character is Tenshinhan because he's awesome." User #2 sees this post as "My favorite character is Tien because he's awesome.", and replies "I agree, Tien is a pretty cool guy.". User #1 sees this post as "I agree, Tenshinhan is a pretty cool guy." Both people would see the name written in the way they prefer it to be written. In what way would that would be confusing for either person?

That's basically the sort of thing I was thinking of having for the Daizex wiki. You could say that this would prevent Funi dub fans from learning the original Japanese names for characters, but if the Japanese names are the default, they'd at least have to familiarize themselves with those names in order to change the filters to the Funi names.

Personally, I'd just have it blank. I think the many naming conventions is one of the most interesting aspects of the Dragon Ball community. I'm well versed in both English and Japanese terms so, y'know, I'm already learned good. The "education" is unnecessary for me.

My list of filtered words. If I had the option, that is.
