Even if English is your first language, there's no rule saying you have to be a certain age to be a member here, right? If I posted here back when I was 14, my spelling and grammar would probably be atrocious.
I'm speaking for English speakers here. But even when I was 14, I could still sit down and type something properly.

I'm pretty sure Mike brought up this point first, but think of it this way: This isn't like a live chat or anything. You basically have all the time in the world to sit and type out your post. There's plenty of free time for you to look over your statement and proofread it before you post it.

Heck, that can even go for non-native English speakers to some extent.
Taking all the time in the world to write your post won't make a difference if you don't know the rules of grammar in the first place. Though I suppose we're talking about extreme cases, rather than a few mixed up cases of "it's" and "its".

Edit:
VegettoEX wrote:Seriously. If your profile says you're from Kansas and are in college and you type like you're nine years old, quite frankly, there's no excuse.
That's certainly fair enough.

What if we set up a quick grammar tutorial with some examples and tips? It might just get ignored, but...it couldn't hurt.

Perhaps you can word filter the most common misspelled words?

That works for spelling, but not for grammar.

Better than nothing, though.

"the" into "the" would rule. Simple yet effective.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Sounds like the best thing to me.

I'm a college student and I'm guilty of some truely atrocious spelling and grammar mistakes; even here on the forums I made some pretty dumb mistakes. Since I want to be a comic book writer, its especially painful to see the dreaded red text on my previous replies. But it keeps me on my toes and it's great to be a apart of a forum that encourages the proper use of the English language. I usualyl stay away from most forums because of the "LOOOOLZ" or "i see wut u did thar" responses.

I can understand why some members ignore the warnings, I live with a grammar nazi myself. I love him but my god, there are some days I just want to hurt him. Over time he actually helped me catch my most common mistakes.

I say go for a temp-ban for members who ignore the PM warnings and repeated offenders get the boot.

I'm Mexican and the only time I've been corrected was in my first post because I just didn't care

I've only gotten the red text one time that I remember...and I vowed never to let it happen again.

It happened to me twice I believe. The first time I didn't even know it was an edit. I just thought I accidentally change the text red somehow. When it happened a second time I realized what it meant.

I often have to edit myself. Since my only time with a computer without an infant crawling all over me is at work during slow spells, I tend to type quickly and sometimes have to post without previewing. Plus, half our damned computers here use those roll out keypads (or whatever those abominations are called). I'm actually surprised I haven't gotten myself red tagged that much.

I'd say temp bans for flagrant offenders might be the best way to go. If the person still doesn't take a hint, then more permanent action may be necessary. I don't think grammar should warrant a permanent band without a temp-ban though. Like at your average job. You get a verbal warning, a written warning, a 3 day suspension, and after that it escalates to either an indefinite suspension pending a hearing or immediate discharge.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I like the idea of a custom title, but I doubt if the people aren't reading over their posts they will notice the new title... maybe if you let them know they are wearing a dunce cap via PM or e-mail it would work! The poor grammar does bug me when it is so blatant, if only because I know good members are putting in hard work to correct it.

Maybe some sort of post restriction can be applied to people who continually have less than satifactory posts.

You can start out with the post corrections and a couple of PMs to make them aware. Then move on to the posting restrictions, then they lose the ability to post. GameFAQs have a Karma system in place which determines what functions you have available to you.

And that's working out real well for them...!

8)

For now, nothing's really changed. People get corrected, they get sent PMs, and hopefully they up their game.
