I find it interesting how he often talks about doing "almost nothing" for the anime, when we know he actually did a
fairly decent amount of designs and other stuff. It could just be Japanese humility, or maybe those extra things did seem pretty piddling to him compared to all the work involved in putting a complete new chapter out week after week.
In that interview, he was saying about his interference in the animation process.
In the same interview he says that he chose Nozawa Masako to be the Goku's voice.
I think he is being sincere when he says he did almost nothing.
Most of the things he did was about character design and some characteristics of those characters.
I think he want everyone to knows that there's some things he did.
But it was not him who created the storyes and defined important things.
Mr. Toriyama is very polite.
He never says something is "bad" or that he "don't like" directly.
But in
my opinion he leaves a lot of "hidden" messages.
The comment he did on the Japanese trailer of DB EVOLUTION, for example..
He doesn't says the film is BAD or that he didn't like.
But he dont use good words to the film too.
In Japanese forums/blogs, I saw a lot of japanese comments about this.
Comments like
"Got it sensei (
Mr. Toriyama). It's better NOT to see that movie"
Mr. Toriyama don't says GT is good.
He says the ANIMATOR is good.
And he says that he DIDN'T designed ssj4.
I feel like
Mr. Toriyama always want's to say indirectly, that manga, anime, live action movies.. Are all different universes.
But this is just my impression.
EDIT:
I remember that somewhere,
Mr. Toriyama said that almost every time he tried to change something in anime, his opinion was denied.
I think it was in letters section of shounen jump.
I'll try to confirm it.
