Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
So The Son Of Kattats splits himself into two. One calls himself Piccolo Daimao ("Demon King From Another World") and the other becomes Kami.
However, "Kami" is just a title to the god of the Earth (Kami = "god" in Japanese). So what was Kami's name prior to becoming the Kami of Earth? Did he never name himself and use it as both title and name? Did he keep the "SOK" name? Did he refer to himself as "Piccolo Anjeru" ("Angel From Another World")? Something else entirely?

I'm pretty sure no one knows what his name is before he receives the title.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
He doesn't even remember his name from before he split, which is why we just get "Son of Kattatsu". If Kami has a name other than that title, I don't think we're ever told what it is.
Piccolo is the name the evil half gave itself, which later turns out to be the Namekian word for "another world" (making him "The Great Demon King from Another World"?)

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
His original name was "Kuji," but he forgot it.
The name of 'the Son of Katatz' was never given anywhere, as far as I know. "Piccolo" was the entrance word for his ship, and meant "Another World" in Namekian. While his memory on other things was lost, he seemed to remember how to speak the language, so I doubt he'd mistake that for his name, or anything.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
He flat-out says he's forgotten his name after the big re-merging of God and Piccolo, so yeah...
Well, the angelic equivalent of "Daimao" would really be daitenshi, "Great Angel" (also Japanese for "archangel").Dayspring wrote:Did he refer to himself as "Piccolo Anjeru" ("Angel From Another World")? Something else entirely?
Heh, from namekuji right? Personally I like to think his name was "Cello", Namekian for "this world" ("lo" meaning "world" in Namekian, under this scheme), making him the opposite of Piccolo.Kaboom wrote:His original name was "Kuji," but he forgot it.
Yeah, when Popo and Bulma are investigating the Namekian spaceship, Bulma says that "Piccolo Daimao" means “great demon king of another world”. Weirdly, in Viz the line is changed to "So the Great Demon Piccolo means…Oh, who cares?!" Apparently when they were working on that line at Viz the recess bell must have sounded or something.Bussani wrote:Piccolo is the name the evil half gave itself, which later turns out to be the Namekian word for "another world" (making him "The Great Demon King from Another World"?)

"Cello" is a cool idea, but it wouldn't really fit the "slugs n' snails" naming convention for all of the other Namekians, as only Piccolo and his spawnlings were named for instruments.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that there were regular Namekians with musical instrument names too. I mean, we know there's 100+ modern Namekians and only a handful are given names. It could also be that the practice of instrument-based names was more common on old Namek before the big disaster, which is why Daimao used it for himself and his offspring.Kaboom wrote:"Cello" is a cool idea, but it wouldn't really fit the "slugs n' snails" naming convention for all of the other Namekians, as only Piccolo and his spawnlings were named for instruments.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
In case I'm not being clear, this is what I'm referring to:
The Son of Katatts is "A." He splits into two people "B" and "C." "B" now calls himself Piccolo, while "C" is called "???" Piccolo goes on a rampage, while ??? becomes the new Kami. From that point on, ??? is addressed to solely as his title of "Kami." Centuries later,
Kami admits that he can't remember what "A" was called.
What was "C" called? Also Piccolo, he never bothered with a name prior to taking the title of Kami, or was he still going by "A"?
So now they're all snail-based name puns, but prior to the cataclysm, we simply don't know.

It could also be another case of family name puns. A Dragon Clan member from the Instrument-name family escapes to Earth while a Snail-name family member survives on Namek. As all following Namekians are sons of that sole survivor, they all have names following his family's name puns.Herms wrote:I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that there were regular Namekians with musical instrument names too. Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
Well, keep in mind that it might be a mistake to think of it as the Nameless Namekian "splitting". Everything that describes it (the manga and daizenshuu) make out that he simply trained to expel the evil from his heart and that the evil later became Piccolo Daimao. As such, he probably would have gone by the name he'd had before splitting, since at first he probably wouldn't have considered him a separate entity. But he'd forgotten that name, soo...
Like I said, if he had another name, we're never told it. Even his Daizenshuu entry says "his real name is unknown".

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
You introduce an interesting possibility that he might have taken a name prior to becoming a god. It would make sense that he would. But I guess we have nothing to go on for that. Also, in terms of "A" being Son of Kattatsu or whatever variation... it's likely he never knew he was the "Son of Kattatsu." Bulma speculates there might have been a recording or note of some kind left behind by his parents. But, again, that's speculation. And it's speculating even further to wonder if that speculative recording had his father introduce himself by name. And if there was, and if the father did so, it would stand to follow that he would give the child's name as well. And obviously he didn't.

His original name has to be "Saxaphone".

If we are going by the "snail" names, we have "Neiru" [English], "Dende" [Japanese]and "Cargo" [French]. So we have a German alteration of "Schnecke" left.Castor Troy wrote:His original name has to be "Saxaphone".

We need something that works as both an instrument pun and a snail/slug pun...No clue what that would be though.

The only thing, that I can think of, that snails and instruments have in common is shells, as in snail shells and acoustic shells/band shells.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
Although there is no defenitive proof, I think in all cases Piccolo was used by A, B, & CDayspring wrote:What was "C" called? Also Piccolo, he never bothered with a name prior to taking the title of Kami, or was he still going by "A"?
A was originally named Piccolo, but lost the memory when he came to Earth.
Since the password "Piccolo" operates the ship and it's the only word he seems to remember, he probably adopted it as his "name" as well.
As a side, I believe that Kami's parents used his name as the password to the ship. As a real world comparison, if you were to ask a parent what five passwords not to use on a computer, they will more than likely list "child's name" first or second.
After the split, B kept the Piccolo name and added the Daimao suffix in order to distinguish between himself and C. Also to signify that he was
After the split C continues to call himself Piccolo as well. However, when B start to become well known to the world by that name, C drops it and takes his title as Kami as his new name.
Also, it's kinda crafty on Mr. Toryama's part. In DBZ we get a big reveal on two of the main character's being aliens in their names (unkowingly to them).
Piccolo name meaning another world (in Namekian), and Goku meaning sky (from which he fell when Gohan found him).

Kami knew how to speak the Namekian language as a whole, even though he didn't really remember what it was. He even taught it to Mr. Popo, who in turn offered to teach it to Bulma.the_abberration wrote:Since the password "Piccolo" operates the ship and it's the only word he seems to remember, he probably adopted it as his "name" as well.

Re: Is Kami's name "Kami" or Piccolo?
Or as Popo relates to Bulma, he was confused in the beginning. Piccolo could have been the only thing he remembered at the time. Later as he becomes less confused and with help from the computer, he recovers his knowledge of the Namekian language.Kaboom wrote:Kami knew how to speak the Namekian language as a whole, even though he didn't really remember what it was. In real world, there have been cases where people who have suffered head trauma, forgot the language they spoke (except for one word, a sentence, what have you). As time goes on that knowledge returns to them. Head trauma is very unpredictable.

If the child of Katattsu's actual name was "Piccolo" all along, it would make his line right after re-merging kinda dumb. "I am neither God nor Piccolo, I am...Piccolo!"
