You'd be surprised how many people blatantly disregard that power-up because I guess logic points to Broli getting weaker while frozen in ice for 7 years (even though it's DB). I mean, I get it, it makes some sense, but the movie and the guidebook says otherwise, so...

Anyway, what exactly does it say about the power-up?

Nothing, it just states that there was a power-up.

Oh what the hell, I'll bite:

[top right text] The legendary Super Saiyan who previously battled Goku. Though he was defeated by Goku, he went on sleeping inside his space pod and at length reached Earth. He revives, having further powered up.

[bottom right text] The large scar on his chest is from when he was pierced through during his battle with Goku.

[left text] He has a durable body capable of withstanding even Super Saiyan Gohan’s attacks.

[bold letters] I won’t die until I defeat him!!

Ahahaha, oh man. So Toriyama's sketch and the fact that it's a mirror image just got shat on by a page from the movie's own entry in the Daizenshuu. I don't know why, but I find that hilarious.

Then again... Super Saiyan kind of became a "universal" term for 1 & 2 starting from the Boo Arc, didn't it? I remember that being the case during the Kibito/Gohan match specifically. Just trying to play devil's advocate, because you know someone will seriously debate that line in the entry sooner or later.

Well true, but then we have Gohan's statement of Vegeta and Goku fighting at a level beyond Super Saiyan, and Goku naming them all of course. Then again, we know the movie was made before these statements, so maybe SSJ 2 wasn't referred to as beyond Super Saiyan before this film premiered??

What?
I think he is referring to Toriyama's sketch for SSJ 2 Gohan for the movie and that the text in the image we are discussing right now implies, that Gohan only used Super Saiyan vs Broli and not anything beyond that.
Which means, that even though AT designed SSJ 2 Gohan for the movie, it was ignored by the producers of movie 10.

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with Herms and say I'm not sure what either of you are talking about. None of the character designs in the "Library of Adventure" in Daizenshuu 6 were done by Toriyama, which is what that scan of Broli is from. Toriyama did some character designs for the movies, but they were almost always of the villains, and there most certainly weren't any of Gohan.

Wait, so this sketch wasn't done by Toriyama? Or what?

Nope. It's pretty hard to tell this if you don't have the actual book to look through, but Daizenshuu 6 has two separate sections devoted to character designs. The first is the "Gallery of Akira Toriyama", which features all the character designs Toriyama drew of movie characters. Many of these are in color, and it mostly consists of villains (since those are generally the only new characters of note in the movies). The only non-villain characters Toriyama drew designs of for the movies were Super Saiyan Goku (so that they'd know how to properly color him), Bardock and his team, plus Tapion and Minoshia.

Then after the Toriyama gallery is the "Library of Adventure", which features various character, item, and location design pictures that the anime staff used. These are all in black and white, and cover pretty much every character in each movie both major and minor. Those pictures of Gohan and the pictures of Broli that started this thread are both from the "Library of Adventure", so they weren't drawn by Toriyama. Instead, they were probably drawn by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Minoru Maeda, or some other anime staff artist.

Wow, so all this time I've been led astray. So that sketch was for the anime then...?

Well, now I'm confused. If both of the images presented in this thread weren't drawn by Toriyama, and they're both made for Movie 10, then... crap. They kind of contradict each other then, don't they? The entry you translated says Super Saiyan Gohan, but the sketch of Gohan clearly depicts both his forms, which were both subsequently shown in the movie, at least visually going off that sketch.

It occurs to me that just because it says that Broli can withstand "Super Saiyan Gohan's attacks", it doesn't mean that Gohan is never Super Saiyan 2 at any point in the movie. Of course, it also occurs to me that just because two unlabeled pictures of Gohan look different, it does not necessarily mean that they are intended to represent two different Super Saiyan forms.

All the character designs up through DBZ movie 7 were done by Maeda Minoru, and the rest were done by Yamamuro Tadayoshi. So, since those two pictures are from DBZ movie 10, I think it stands to reason that they were done by Yamamuro Tadayoshi.
