What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
You know...as entertaining as this is, I think it's about time to pull out the ol' lock and key.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I agree. The best translation is pretty much Steve Simmons' translation. Even if it's not the manga translation. In general, I'm pretty sure it's the best. That should've been said earlier. Or maybe it was. I didn't read this mess of a thread.jjgp1112 wrote:You know...as entertaining as this is, I think it's about time to pull out the ol' lock and key.

I didn't add it as my website I don't know what he's talking about but sure respect, I was really just venting with those pictures. Yeah I've read Jhonny the Homicidal Maniac and I really like Mindless Self Indulgence if you know who they are.Akumaito Beam wrote:I don't think typing your name into Google is "stalking" but you do seem pretty hardcore! Edit: Oh you posted your deviantart as your website huh? That's even less stalking than I had originally imagined! Don't worry man I still want to be besties. DOWN WITH THE CLOWN WHOOP WHOOP!

Yeah, pretty much. And even though the Viz manga can be a little...odd at times, it could be much worse.ShadowDude112 wrote:I agree. The best translation is pretty much Steve Simmons' translation. Oh yeah man, they rule! I like how goth they are. Sometimes I try to dress up as MSI members for my freshman high-school classes but then everyone laughs at me and I feel really mad! I like when Johnny chops up people for being closed minded and not respecting his individuality. I can totally relate to that because sometimes I get real mad at all the people making fun of me y'know? I'm glad we're brothers now so I can share this kind of thing with you. I totally agree that it's nice to vent! Jhonen Vazquez totally gets us, sometimes I feel like he's the only one that understands me. (Him and TheAmazingAtheist of course.) Can you tell me what that picture Taku linked to was? It seems really edgy and it touched me in ways I've never been touched. I'll come right out and say it, you should become pro.Nex Carnifex wrote: I didn't add it as my website I don't know what he's talking about but sure respect, I was really just venting with those pictures. The Viz translation...what else is there?!
And Dragon Ball is a KIDS comic. A KIDS show. Shounen = young boys (teens and such.) And when is there any mention of RAPE in the Pilaf arc? And for the Bugs Bunny comment..ugh. Those cartoons were NOT aimed for kids. I've seen interviews of the directors of the cartoons saying they aimed them at adults who were trying to kill some time in the 40s! Things back then were much different then they are today. Anywhere pretty much. It even says on the Looney Tunes DVDS: "The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in the U.S society. These depictions were wrong then and they are wrong today. While the following does not represent the Warner Bros. view of today's society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming that these prejudices never existed."
Nuff said. Dragon Ball is for kids.

You could pick up the french release. The barrier between English and French is a lot less than Japanese.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

I do hear that the French manga translation is really top-notch, especially for the kanzenban.Ashura wrote:You could pick up the french release. The barrier between English and French is a lot less than Japanese.

Maybe, but if there was it obviously never got huge because we probably don't have tons of French speaking people here.Akumaito Beam wrote:I'm intrigued! Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
well, I'm just gunna leave it at viz makes it even more goofy and awkward than it was, while the more accurate translation i read just made me feel i was reading something a lot more charming, i like how bulma calls goku a country bumpkin instead of a he-man, it just makes more sense. I'll leave it at that.
Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
I have the first three French Kanzenban, and they're really really nice. As close to the Japanese version as they probably could get. The dialogue I went to check seemed pretty spot on, too, though my French isn't fluent so much as 'good enough,' and I only read through them a little bit.Herms wrote:I do hear that the French manga translation is really top-notch, especially for the kanzenban.

"The Japanese version was aimed at the mid-teen (13-18 year-old) demographic, although it did attract an older, young adult (18-30 year-old) audience. This age group is generally considered to be able to distinguish between reality and fantasy while being old enough to catch the sexual innuendo" from a website that seemed trustworthy
So yeah I am in the original demographic! Shut up about 5-8 year old bs assholes...

Um, where are you getting this from? A source would be nice. A "website that seems trustworthy" does not decide what the target audience is.Nex Carnifex wrote:"The Japanese version was aimed at the mid-teen (13-18 year-old) demographic, although it did attract an older, young adult (18-30 year-old) audience. Listen Carfax, a guy witha Tripod site is not reliable, and no matter how much you quote things, the demographic was kids.

My Geocities page was so rockin', I had this sweet-ass skull gif on the top and bottom of every page, and a bitchin' midi guitar riff started every time you clicked on a new page. So rad.

Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
Well listen generic Dragon Ball themed name, Wikipedia lists Shonen demographic as roughly ages 10 and up. Just saying it wasn't made for 6-8 year olds, that is just ridiculous.Freeza Heika wrote:Nex Carnifex wrote:He seems to know his shit http://dragonball-thesis.tripod.com/HTML/3.htmlGreat Saiyaman I wrote:Um, where are you getting this from?
