Gohan Question
Does anyone think that Gohan could have carried Dragonball Z if Goku was not in the picture?
If so, at which point do you think it should have happened?
1) After the Freeza arc
2) After the Pilaf Saga arc
3) After the Cell Saga arc
4) After the Buu Saga arc (when he returned as Mystic Gohan)
Thanks for your input. And sorry if this has been asked before.

After the Buu Saga, if at all.
The problem with Gohan is he has no internal motivation. If nothing's immediately wrong, he'll gladly sit on his ass and eat corn chips all day.
That being said, the Mystic powerup was a godsend (pun intended) for him. Now, he can be lazy all he wants, and he'll never lose power! Huzzah!
If Goku were taken out of the picture, it should've been Piccolo and/or Vegeta taking his place, not his sorry excuse for a son.

It was Toriyama's intent to make Gohan the central character after the Cell games - but the will of the fans (and probably his editors) changed that
Gohan could've easily taken over for Goku after the Cell games (as was Goku's intent) if he didn't slack off so damn much - but in his defense he didn't think there was anything even remotly powerful left in the galaxy.
Personally, I think Gohan could've taken care of everything after Namek exploded. If he had trained properly with Piccolo (or Goku if he was still alive) Gohan would've been able to beef-up to near Super Saiyan strength before 'Mecha'-Freeza arived, and would probably go Super Saiyan in that battle. After that, it'd be a cake walk.

Re: Gohan Question
I think it should have happened during the three years training before the arrival of the androids. It always bothered me that Goku never taught Gohan how to go SSJ during that time, knowing Vegeta, Gohan and Trunks could eventually do so. I always wanted Gohan to be the timid SSJ we saw in the Cell games, and then take over after defeating Cell.the_abberration wrote:Does anyone think that Gohan could have carried Dragonball Z if Goku was not in the picture?

In my opinion, Gohan would be a horrible leader. Hmm...Let's see his agenda...study, study, study, don't train for seven years, don't train for ten years, keep up your slacking ass for another five, lose your Mystic power-up, then get possessed by a genocidal maniac...
C'mon, Gohan would be too busy reading 'Science Monthly' to even notice that an enemy killed his family.

I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

You know, I love how you guys criticise Gohan for not being like his father and neglecting his training to concentrate on family and studies, then the next minute you turn around and criticise Goku for spending all his time training and neglecting his family. They're not the same person. Get over it.

Maybe if he had stayed in that superpowerful, pissed-off, I'm-a-gonna-kill-you mode when he went SSJ2 at the Cell Games. After that, he was kind of naive and embarassing.

A thread dedicated to bashing one of the greatest characters of Dragonball.
Great...
Son Gohan was a fantastic contribution to the story. If he had been a carbon clone of Goku, he wouldn't be interesting in any way. He contrasted Goku and had a lot more humanity in him, and less fighting spirit.
He was a lot of things Goku was not, but he was a lot of things Goku was. He was pretty much intended to be the successor of Goku, and Toriyama-sensei must've wanted a different kind of person for the latter half of the story...cours', everyone else wanted Goku, so they got Goku.
But what's this about him being a wuss? I'm remembering a few things...oh yeah, being the first person to kick Freeza around, making the "perfect" fighter resort to self-destruction out of sheer desperation of the like never before seen from a major (or minor) Villain, taking the most sadistic, maniacal of the Boo's and just tossing him around.
Yeah, Gohan had a restrained, timid side, but THANK GOD he did. It carried more plot with it than any of Vegeta or Goku's "omg zenkai!!!" events.

I don't dislike Gohan because he's not like his dad. I dislike him because he's quite possibly the cheapest character in DBZ.
Like the Mystic powerup. He sits on his ass for seven years, gets rightfully thrashed, then gets an ungodly huge powerup that puts him above everybody but Vegetto by sitting on his ass for a day somewhere else. Woo.

Well at least it's a change from the typical "go and train somewhere for a while" formula. Once again, you guys prove how fickle you are by complaining about repetitiveness in DBZ, then when something's done differently, there are complaints about that. Plus it's not like there was time to do that in the current situation with Majin Buu either. I notice there aren't complaints about when Vegeta allowed himself to be possessed by Babidi for a quick power-up though.
Oh and I must applaud your post Duo and say I totally agree with you.

How is the strongest being in the universe a wuss?
Gohan was basically the sar of Dragonball. He got more screen time in both the manga and the anime than Goku did.
As Goku himself said in the Cell Games story arc. Gohan was far stronger than Goku was when he was Gohan's age.

Um he was four years old. He wasn't a brat, he was a polite well spoken little boy. He was just very sheltered and timid.Heh, he'd NEVER survive even if he was at SSJ level if he hadn't trained with Piccolo in the Saiyajin arc. NEVER. After, he was, at the time, as Piccolo puts it...

I don't hate Gohan either, I just don't like the fact that he promised Goku that'd he'd protect the Earth after he was killed by Cell, and what does he go and do? Slack off in his training, let Vegeta surpass him...and when Majin Buu does appear, he still has to have daddy to hold his hand!
I don't hate Gohan, I just hate the fact that Goku was brought back after Cell's death. If he were not, then I think Gohan might have kept his promise to his father, knowing he was dead for good.
