Majin Boo's Death: Tankōbon vs. Kanzenban

Post by Xagani » Fri Feb 08, 2013 7:22 pm

I was just going through the pages in the Kanzenban version of when Goku kills Boo with the Genki Dama, and I noticed something was different, so I checked that same page in the Tankōbon and sure enough Toriyama has added a few extra panels!

Has anyone else noticed this also?
Sorry if the images are too large, I don't know how to make them smaller...

Wow! Good catch. I've never noticed that. I didn't know that there were any other changes made in the Kanzenban release.

Yeah, I was just bored and going through the defeat of Boo when I noticed that the final panel with Vegeta sitting up looked kind of out of place and drawn more in the style of Toriyama's Kanzenban ending. I had no idea that he redrew this too! I also was under the impression that he only re-drew the ending with Oob.

Wow Boo's death in the Kanzeban looks a helluva lot more painful.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

This has been brought up a few times. Chouzenshuu 1 showcases those new pages in its feature on the kanzenban.

I knew Toriyama took a shining to Vegeta, that makes me pretty glad. :D

Great find Xagani! The spacing of the pages and shots is actually a lot more like Cell's destruction now (you have the large page with two panels, followed by multiple smaller panels on the next page showing him breaking down into nothingness). I was just wondering, though, what does Vegeta say in his two extra panels? I'm sure it's not much, but I'm really curious now haha :D

A rough translation is on the second page of the old thread Hujio posted. (I asked the same question then.)

This is from Julian's translation: "Sooner or later, Kakarrot, I WILL show you defeat... Hmph!"
Incredibly unfortunate, I thought he would have Vegeta say something appraising instead of being bitter at the end. I guess Toriyama truly dislikes Vegeta.

Just for the record, Vegeta saying he'll defeat Kakarot some day is from the very end of the kanzenban, after Goku flies off with Oob. In the new pages fleshing out Boo's death that are featured above, Vegeta basically says "bah, he looks so happy. That guy really pisses me off". Still rather bitter.

Funny, this is exactly the same misunderstanding that happened way back when.

I don't see why it means Toriyama dislikes Vegeta for having him act in-character.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

For the record, it pretty much goes like this;

*Majin Boo has been annihilated*

Goku: "*Panting* It's finally over ..."

Vegeta: " ... Hmph, it's about damn time. Tch ... What's with the goofy look on his face .... I seriously can't stand you ... Heh."

Or somethign like that.

There's actually a number of changes and corrections they made to the Kanzenban:
  • The majority of the added Shueisha text and taglines on the title pages have been removed.
  • The title page for Chapter 5 was entirely digitally redrawn, presumably because the original colored version was lost, and the cigarette in Bulma's mouth was removed.
  • The title page for Chapter 86 was entirely digitally redrawn, presumably because the original colored version was lost. Nothing has been edited.
  • In Chapter 110, Shuu's name has been switched back to Soba. This one's a little confusing, so hold on. When the character first appeared in Chapter 18, Toriyama gave him the name Soba, but when the anime went into production Toriyama had forgotten he had already named the character in the manga. So he told the anime staff the character should be named Shuu, based on another noodle pun. So when the character reappeared in the manga (Chapter 110), Toriyama called him Shuu to stay consistent with the anime (a fan asks him about this in the "Ask Me Anything Corner" section of Dragon Ball Tankōbon Volume 07). But in the Kanzenban version of Chapter 110, they alter Shuu's name back to Soba to stay consistent within the manga. So in the Kanzenban, his name is always Soba. Shuu does not exist within the Kanzenban. :P
  • In Chapter 205, the sign reading "WELL COME" over Enma-daiō's building has been edited to read "WEL COME".
  • Goku's last piece of dialogue in the third panel on the last page of Chapter 365 has been corrected so that Goku uses his normal personal pronoun of "Ora" (オラ) instead of "Ore" (オレ).
  • Cell's dialogue in Chapter 389 announcing the Cell Games has been altered so that the tournament will take place on May 26th, rather than on "M 17th" as he originally stated. This is all based on the fact that the artificial humans were supposed to arrive on May 12th. Between various bits of narration and Cell saying the tournament will be 9 days after his TV announcement, the total amount of time between the artificial humans' initial attack and the Cell Games is locked in pretty firmly as 14 days, meaning either the Cell Games should be May 26th or the artificial humans should have shown up on "M 3rd". Daizenshuu 7 goes with the former approach, and the kanzenban follow suit, changing Cell's speech so that he says the Cell Games will be on May 26th.
  • Three additional pages have been added to the end of Chapter 516 further detailing the destruction of Majin Buu.
  • The final page of Chapter 519, and of the series, has been expanded to include two additional pages of Goku giving Kinto-Un to Uub.
  • Akira Toriyama's goodbye message included with Chapter 519 has been removed and replaced with Vegeta, declaring he will show Goku defeat sooner or later.
That's all I can remember for now, but I feel like I missing one or two...
(Must be the paint fumes.)

For the record, they are removed on most manga series when they are compiled in volumes. The tankobon volumes of Dragon Ball are one of the few releases that keep them.
I don't like them very much, since they block part of the original art.

I forget which chapter it is, but they also alter Vegeta saying his Battle Power is near 20,000 (which it had actually already surpassed) to saying it's near 30,000, but only in the second printing and later.

In terms of editorial blunders, the chapter 12/13/18/19 title page thing annoys me, but to date I think I'm the only one who's noticed (along with the people I've told, including Peking Duck and kei17
