Real life humans can hold their breath for several minutes, so it would only natural for Goku to be able to do it for at least 10 or 12 minutes while fighting. In fact, we have already seen Goku being able to hold his breath for quite some time when he tried to dive in the sea in search for a dragon ball.This has always been the case, Goku and co. are more superhuman and conditioned to handle much tougher environment than any normal human could ever hope to achieve such as the room of spirit and time unaided by anything but their ki enhanced bodies.
