Puar's Gender

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

I was just referring to the translation of that Toriyama quote, here. Just because he says "his" in that quote, that doesn't necessarily mean he said "his" (well, "kare") in the original text.

But yeah, having read the series in Japanese to begin with, I never even considered the possibility that Pooal might be female.
especially since it was back in the earlier volumes long before the likes of "Djinn" and "Hercule".
Again, "djinn" is a valid translation of "majin".
As for "Hercule"... Well, blame the United States.

That one was logical. It was either that or a weird "-tto" coming out of nowhere.
No, the problem came from the spelling they used for "kakarotto"... and that one came "long before the likes of "Djinn" and "Hercule"" as well.

Oddly, I've always thought of Puar to be female for some reason...maybe it's the dub's original VA or something, but I've just seen Puar as a girl eversince I got into Dragon Ball. Strange, I know. :P
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Yeah, same. Before I could understand anything Puar said in the original version I was used to how the dub made him out to be female. And there's nothing that Puar really does that would give it away so it's easy to believe. But when I started to read the manga I noticed that he uses the male forms to say many things like for example needing to pee. But overall, I don't think it's something that makes much difference either way. Really, what does it change?

I too thought Puar was a girl - probably the cat-thing (most people will see a cat as female and a dog as male, blame Disney).

Strangely, I see him as male now - even with the dub-voice. *shrug*

The Japanese voice of Puar doesn't help either unless you're familiar enough with Japanese to recognize gender-specific ways of speech.

Now that I think about it, you know how Cathy Weseluk's Puar had a tint of British in his voice? I just realized that coincidentally, two popular anime series premiered the same year with them both having British accented cats in their dubs.

Do you really think Yamcha would hang around a female floating cat/pokemon thing for all that time? He was probably considered Yamcha's bud, as in a male...floating cat/pokemon thing. It just seems that way to me. Yamcha didn't hang around any type of females. Also, they were desert bandits. Femals have this thing about crime, guns, and stealing.

Haha, yeah, let's not stereotype. In fact I think more women than men in the series have handled guns at some point, among the main cast at least. I don't think having a female companion would have rubbed him the wrong way either since he only has problems with females his age and probably species...

I always thought of Puar as male... then someone told me he was female and I got confused, I eventually accepted it... and now you gusy are saying he's male again...

/me sighs...

Well, anyway, I always thought of Puar as male because his fur was that dark blue-ish green color. Childish logic, sure, but I was 9 and it worked for me. :)

Sadly the author of the fanfic in my sig has definitley made Puar a girl (just read and see the covers). Puar changes into a "cat girl" and was always in love with Yamcha. Now that I figure that Puar is in fact male it does seem awkward  . Then again Puar's gender never really was specified in the manga or played a major role. Another error (for a even stranger reason) he cast Videl as twelve when she would have been five or six at the begginning of DBZ. *sigh* The show must go on though...
