Heh, that reminds me of the Transformers movie. They kill off Megatron and Optimus within 10 minutes, along with a couple dozen other well-known characters. It was crazy - no one ever hit anyone in the show before - they were basically Stormtroopers :P Somewhere between the TV and the theatre they learned how to aim - the first half hour of that movie was like 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Anyway... No one's been talking about what they think about the difference between 'watching DB and then being shocked when Goku is revealed to be an alien', and 'starting DBZ without knowing who anybody is, without the shock of Goku's alien heritage'.

So, what does everyone think? What do you think about the two different ways to start the story?

"I'll rip out your optics..."

Anyway, at first Dragon Ball Z was confusing, namely in the amount of information that was dumped. At first, the only names that really stuck were Goku and Piccolo. I kept calling Kuririn "Kril" at first. I didn't get Bulma's name at all, so I just picked a random name to use at first (I think I called her Tracy in my mind for the first couple of episodes). Eventually everyone's name stuck.

The revelation was more interesting in watching how the characters reacted and seeing that they seemed suitably confused that he was an alien, and it was clear there was some backstory I was missing but I didn't pay much attention. It didn't pahse me, because by the time his heratige was a truly important point (during the Furiza saga, when Vegeta demnaded Furiza die by a Saiya-jin hand--before that he han't really accepted it, and people were all "well, Goku's an alien, but it doesn't matter too much"), I knew what I needed to know.
... Maybe later.

Personally I began watching during the Pikkon fight, so I already knew about Saiyans & Super Saiyans by the time I watched the Raditz/Saiyan stuff.

I think I saw all through the Babidi Saga until I saw some early DBZ....& remember watching the first episode & thinking a few things:

1. Why the hell do Goku & Piccolo sound so different

2. Why are they so small & not really muscular

3. My sweet solem Piccolo......a villian?!?!
Vegito: What do you call a Goku & a Vegeta? Gogeta sounds nice.

Heheh, I think that Piccolo thing was one of the biggest things I feel I missed out on the first time around.

From the perspective of US fans who watched from the beginning, Piccolo was basically a hero with a chip on his shoulder. We are told it wasn't always so, but we don't see any of this. Frankly I'm surprised the anime doesn't cut to a Ma Junior Saga flashback after the two team up

And the whoooole thing was alien combat. Watching DB first that's a representation of Sun Wukong teamed up with the former Great Demon King (with a nifty retcon thrown in). Starting at Z it's just alien A and alien B.

Also, I don't know if this is the character in general or part of that altered perception, but Piccolo was one of the key reasons I'm not too big on Vegeta. The whole "strange bedfellows" thing worked so much better with him. He decided he needed to work with the good guys to further his agenda and he actually follows through. He basically becomes a surrogate Goku in our heroe's absences. Vegeta's idea of a partnership with the heroes is "I'll fight the guy you're fighting but don't get in my way." Which is why we end up with Perfect Cell. When Piccolo learned of Cell's plan for completion his response was "well, guess I better kill you first then." It's funny that even before he starts fusing with good Namek-seijin, Piccolo, the revenge-driven spawn of pure evil who works alone and lives soley for Goku's death, is better able to play with others than little Vegeta-chan.

Oh, and of course, the voice change at Vegeta's crucial time didn't help. Or Piccolo for fusion, for that matter. We lost Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond for Christopher Sabbat x 2.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I remember seeing the adverts for it on cartoon network here in the UK. I didn't think anything of it and I wasn't planning on watching it. Anyway, I got home from school and watched cartoons, the first episode of DBZ came on and I sat through it, I thought it was pretty cool. By about the fourth episode I was already hooked.

I just loved the way they could fly and use ki to kick the crap out of each other. I watched it all the way through, missing only one episode in the Frieza saga. Then I saw all of GT and a couple of years later they finally put Dragonball on, so I watched all of that. Then I started collecting all the movies and manga and I've got some saga boxsets.

It would have been cool to watch all of DB first to get the big twist that Goku was an alien.

My brothers and I first saw Dragonball Z during either the Saiyan or Namek sagasg when it was still airing weekends at 7:00 AM on the WB (I believe), though they started watching it before I did. I kinda noticed this show they were watching that looked kind of wierd and before I knew it I started watching it and liking it as well. We would use our toys and pretend they were DBZ characters and act out our own stories with them (we did this a lot with other series, once we had Reboot characters fighting DBZ Freeza saga style). I specifically remember using a green power ranger for Piccolo. Anyway, our first piece of recorded DBZ was the TV version of movie 3, having no idea it was part of the canon story we thought it was the reason the crew had to Namek.

After a while we stopped watching and found it again on Cartoon Network Toonami and we started recording it along with Reboot. When the new episodes started airing I was kind of wierded out by the voice changes and presence of blood though I got used to them pretty fast. I didn't start hating the dub until a little after the Freeza saga ended and I went on the internet and found a little site called DBZ uncensored.

Me and my older brother started watching Z during the saiyan saga. We were very surprised at how good the show was. The only thing that confused us was when they said Kuririn had already died once before (not knowing there was even a series before Z). But this was all during the CN run. I use to have fun with my old DBZ toys I only have 3 left I have no idea were the others went. Ever since that first time I watched it I was hooked. It took me a long time to find out about GT, found out about that when I first got the Internet. I only saw pictures and and a couple of episodes without subtitles so I never knew what was going on. Also thanks the the Internet I got more knowledge about the DBZ universe. I will never forget that first day I watched DBZ, I was only a 7 year old boy.

The first episode I ever saw, on the Toonami block in the winter of 2001, was the episode of the Cell Games where SSJ Goku and Perfect Cell started their epic match.

Suffice to say, I was hooked. My exact thoughts were "This is the best superhero show I've ever seen!"

I slowly began researching the show history, and eventually watched the entire series. I'd have to say the entire Android saga, starting with the arrival of Trunks from the future, will always be my favorite stretch of the series.

I think the first episode I watched was sometime in the Buu Saga, maybe the World Tournament then.

I'm also happy that I was no introduced to the series by an unedited ep. 1, because that episode is probably the worst 'premiere' ever.
