Heh...we love to make fun of this at HeroChat. One of our members referred to the Freeza/Goku conversations as "standing still at lightspeed."

It's a great fight, but...

I always assumed that Freeza got the time wrong since he didn't put as much power into the blast as he needed to actually make the planet expode in five minutes.

Plus, they fight way faster in actual time than what we see on the screen, since it has to be slowed down for us to see every punch and kick. If it was at a normal speed then you'd blink and suddenly someone would be climbing out of rubble after an exchange.

I don't buy the "they moved really really really really really really really really fast" theory. And to quote someone else who moves really really really really really really really really fast, The Flash, who said on more than one occasion: "There are some things that can't be done in the blink of an eye." Although he was refering to sleeping and urinating, it can be applied to other things.

Considering that the Budokai announcer had trouble seeing Goku and Tenshinhan fight in the 22nd Budokai, Gohan (initially) had trouble seeing the action when the Saiyans came to Earth, and nobody could see Goku move when he was dodging Jiisu and Baata and all these events took place well before anyone was showing battle powers that could rival a Super Saiyan I can totally buy the idea of seeing Goku vs. Frieza being shown at a slower pace than how fast it was really going.

Sure, the theory is full of holes as the weather, crashing tides, etc. would've been going in slow-motion if the idea was that Goku and Frieza's movements were shown at a speed we could understand. However, at the same time we all know what filler is and how much there was in that battle. The truth of the matter is that, in terms of this kind of discussion, Toei just chose a bad place to put filler.

Arrrgh... I hate this discussion (and I'll jump head first into power level debates

Freeza says "5 minutes" and then comments that it's taking "a little longer". So, say, ten minutes at most. I don't see where the problem lies. Yeah there were a dozen episodes to cover the fight - but that's filler. They needed to make filler episodes, but what else could they have done? Gohan finds another dinosaur?

Everyone and everything was focused on the Freeza/Goku fight. To make an episode or two about anything else would take away from the importantence of the fight.

So for now, it's sitting there in WMM half-finished. Ah, well. I'll finish it eventually.

Anyway, I always like to think Freeza was just bragging or just didn't calculate the time correctly. That's all. By the way, wasn't there a contest on an AMV like this? I was really looking foward to that like a timer in the bottom, epic soundtrack, you know that kind of stuff. Carry on..

Shit, I thought I remembered reading that, but I can't be sure now. Damn you brain! *shakes fist at... my own head, I guess*

Could very well have been filler. I don't think it matters, really. My point is that the extrenuous length of the anime fight is because it was filler, not because they were going "faster than lightspeed".

I just checked the manga, and no, he doesn't say it. Either I missed it or it's filler. But I'm pretty sure it's not there. Toei probably just added it after they realized "five minutes" was taking a dozen episodes.

Another interesting point:

Piccolo's blast with about 1.200 Ki destroys the moon in seconds.

Freeza's , with millions of Ki takes "5 minutes" to destroy Namek.

If you want to get into that, any ki blast that hits the Earth during the Cell games on should destroy the planet instantly. If Freeza had the power for that then, I'm sure even Pan could also.
