The Original "Mark"

As many of our regular visitors/readers/listeners know, Akira Toriyama revealed in the (at the time) new Super Exciting Guide - Character Volume in April 2009 that Mr. Satan's true name was "Mark". It was an anagram of "akuma" to "maa - ku", or simply as noted, "Mark". It worked in well with "Videl" (an anagram of "Devil"), so the family name pun series stayed true to the end.

At the time, I'm pretty sure Olivier Hague mentioned that this name had actually been used in the same way in a prior Toriyama-related work: Tobal 2. For those who don't know, the two Tobal games were very impressive looking fighters on the original PlayStation (fast frame-rate and higher-res graphics due to little-to-no-shading on the characters). The first game, Tobal No.1 came out in the US... but sadly, the follow-up (Tobal 2, minus that "No." in there) never made its way over here.

Well, hey. I own Tobal 2. Can't believe I never bothered to post this before:

I was mostly just going to leave it here and that would be that, but we're covering the "Mark" name pun during our panel at Otakon this coming weekend... and I think I might toss this in at the last minute. I was randomly playing the game the other night, but didn't make it far enough to fight Mark. Anyone wanna take a look at this character entry (it's from the instruction manual) and let me know if there's anything good in there? Are there awesome Tobal resources out there that we could pick some info out of?

There's probably not much to say other than, "Oh hey... and this name pun was used in the same way before! Ain't that crazy?!"... but hey, cool stuff...!

I've never heard of Tobal, and never owned an original Playstation before, but seems interesting.
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

A legendary warrior who appeared on the earth’s surface after his seal was broken as a result of the Kattsu Foundation’s chairmain being blinded by greed and chaotically digging mines. It seems that he’s so powerful a warrior that his legend remained in the ancient history of Planet Tobal, but nobody really knows his background. The reason he was sealed inside the mountain is unknown.

Oh, note that in the scan, in "Mark the devil", "devil" is a translation of maou, "demon king", not akuma, the word his name is a pun on.

Nah, this is Toriyama we're talking about. So it's actually two inset semi-circles dangling where his junk should be but isn't.
