Toriyama Sensei?

Post by Great Saiyaman » Tue Dec 13, 2005 7:31 pm

Why do people call him Toriyama Sensei? What does the Sensei mean? When I think Sensei I think Martial Arts teacher.

Sensei is a honorific that means 'teacher' I also think that it has something to do with tespect. I really don't know why people call him Toriyama-sensei, I just call him that because I've seen others do the same. ^^
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Toriyama-san is more common. Adding sensei only makes sense if he's teaching you something.

I believe it's added to someone you respect or is an expert in something (Doctors have -sensei added to their names, for example)
Where's the beef?

Sensei / 先生 (sen-sei)

Literally meaning "one who has come before", this title is used for teachers, doctors, or masters of any profession or art… such as a manga-ka like Toriyama-sensei!

The term "sensei" is made up of the kanji "saki" (先) meaning "before" or "previous", and "ikiru" (生きる) which means "life/to live".

It always pissed me off when people try to correct me for NOT putting sensei. Who are they trying to convince? Would they prefer it if I wrote "Toriyama-scholar?" :x

The only thing I ask is that people don't call him either "Akira" or "AT". Other than that, I don't care any less what you do or do not throw at the end for an honorific.

There are several reasons people reference Toriyama as "-sensei".

-He has influenced them greatly in their craft (similar to how Oda Eiichiro references him).
-He is seen a master in his own craft.
-They hold him in very high regard (also could be replaced by "-sama")
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

Sensei is pretty much added as an honorific to anyone who has mastered and art. I've seen it added to many manga-ka's names. (Kubo-sensei, Oda-sensei, Kishimoto-sensei...)

In vol. 14 of Kenshin, Watsuki also refers to him as Toriyama-sensei. And who is Kubo?

My best guess would be "Kubotite" of Bleach fame. (And according to ANN' his real name is Noriaki Kubo.)

Now as far as this topic is concerned, like others, I refer to Akira Toriyama as either "Akira Toriyama", "Akira Toriyama-sensei", or just "Toriyama-sensei", out of respect. I feel that either refering to him by his full name, or by adding an honorific to it if I reference him by his family name I am attempting to show great respect for the man. I respect him for his contribution to artistic imagery, because through his art it helped me remember why I loved to draw and drove me to emulate his style, as well as diversify my own.

I owe a great many thanks to the man, beyond simple enjoyment of his published works.

For a long time, I referred to him as "Toriyama-Sama" but just a short while back I started going with "-Sensei" like most everyone here...I'm not really sure why.

Either way, thanks to Mike, I have become very against calling him by "AT" or other shortenings like that which display no respect.

Yea as said above, Sensei is for doctors, teachers, or anyone important that deserves the right to have it said to them as a sign of respect.

I just say Toriyama, he's not really my Sensei(even though I use his art style sometimes) and I feel it's not needed of me to add it after his name. Simple as.

People really just call him "Akira"? Really? Who does that?

There's been a couple of past members on here that have.....not suprising is the fact that they ended being banned, though not for that specific reason.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I've been banned from a board for not refering to him as "Akira Kun." Total misdirected elitism. Blah.

But to put in perspective, "Akira" would be like saying you have to do a history report on "George". Not only is beyond disrespectful, but who the hell refers to a person's first name when at least one person in the discussion isn't on a first name basis with him? You would ALWAYS refer to a person by their full name, last name, or their title if it's unique (in Toriyama's case: "The creator of Dragonball").

So Homer Simpson is an arrogant bastard for saying 'Akira my man!' on the blow fish episode when he's going to die?

Maybe he is one anyway...

Well, yeah. :?

Homer Simpson is a simpleton who, partially as a result of which, is an arrogant bastard. It's why we love him. :P
