Greek dub of Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies from 1997
Greek dub of Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies from 1997
An interesting piece of information for those dealing with the various dubs of Dragon Ball around the world.
It was recently discovered that AZ Sound Studios wasn't actually the first studio that made a Greek dub for Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies in 2010-2011.
There is actually another older Greek dub made by SPK Video Film Television in 1997.
But for some reason the movie doesn't have the same cast as the series. The only thing that remained the same was the Greek Opening theme by Panos Tsaparas and Anna Merkouri.
The actors that have been identified so far are: Zetta Pasparaki and Othon Metaxas.

Haven't seen the clip but from what someone else has told me Master Roshi was voiced by a woman.
Also looks like it may have been intended to air on Apollo TV.

And this must be the first and only time in history where Master Roshi is voiced by woman.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Sat Jun 08, 2024 5:34 amHaven't seen the clip but from what someone else has told me Master Roshi was voiced by a woman.
Apollo TV was not a TV channel. As far as we know, it was a company that was giving rights to Greece for TV programs, collections etc.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Sat Jun 08, 2024 5:34 am Also looks like it may have been intended to air on Apollo TV.
Spoiler:
Here is a stickers collection for example from 2002-2003. At the bottom left it says "Licensed through Apollo TV. All rights reserved". https://vendora.gr/items/eox80o/almpoum ... -keno.html
Most likely it was intended to air on ANT1. This group of voice actors was heard only in cartoons that ANT1 was airing back then. These voice actors were not the ones who did the series but the dubbing studio was the same.
Or it was just meant to be released on VHS.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of this.TheRed259 wrote: Sat Jun 08, 2024 12:21 pm Apollo TV was not a TV channel. As far as we know, it was a company that was giving rights to Greece for TV programs, collections etc.

Were Apollo TV similar to Plus Licens so? Sounds like they could be described as an "agency" or "broker" for Dragon Ball home video and TV rights in Greece, much like Plus Licens were for the Nordic territories from about 2009.
Maybe they got the sublicense from AB Groupe who were looking for a local licensor for Greece and Cyprus?

Someone had posted an image of an email the other day that he got from Toei some years ago. I don't know in what conclusions we can jump to but apparently the email was saying among other things that Dragon Ball eps. 1-153 were licensed in ANT1 and Dragon Ball eps. 1-104 were licensed in Attalus Apollo. As you can see they are referring to the same episodes (1-104) so it's either a mistake or some licensing issue.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Sun Jun 09, 2024 5:47 pm Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of this.

I just saw it and I think this post sheds a little more light on the whole issue.
From Google Translate:
The poster of the first Dragon Ball movie in the magazine 7 DAYS TV (Image 1).
An indication that the first dubbing of the movie Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies by the studio Cine-TV-Video Productions in 1997 was made for ANT1 and not just for some VHS release. It is very likely that Toei Animation, along with the movie, gave ANT1 its poster. The image with the poster must be one of those that the Public Relations Department of ANT1 gave to magazines to advertise Dragon Ball, such as in Image 2.
According to the broadcast time (11:00), the description of the series (Super Gohan) and others, this particular clipping must be from the 2001-2002 television season where episodes 184-239 of Dragon Ball Z were broadcast.
The first dub of the film has been found on a VHS produced by Cine-TV-Video Productions but to this day it is not certain whether it was ever broadcast by ANT1 even though it seems that it had secured its rights. In this particular dub, you can hear Zetta Pasparaki, Othon Metaxas, Margarita Varlamou and a voice actor who is still unknown (more information at Greek Dub DB).

Maybe this was a test dub that was pitched to ANT1? They could have aired the movie at an obscure timeslot, hence the uncertainty regarding whether or not it was broadcast.
It doesn't seem like the VHS was a commercial release, but these things are randomly found in offices, such was the case with Funimation's test dub of the same movie where Goku is called Zero.
