Gohan's SSj2 transformation twice
During the Cell games, at the end of the episode called "Children of Cell attack", Gohan turns SSj2 right after Cell killed 16...but then in the very next episode hes back to being a SSj1 again, and we have to wait a good 5 minutes for him to turn Ssj2 again. But this time, he transforms in a different way (not immediately after Cell killed 16), with footage totally different from the previous episode! Whats the deal with that?
Edit: Sorry, I think I may have put this in the wrong section. Seems more appropriate for the "Dragonball Questions" forum.

It happens quite a bit. During the Ginyu Saga, where Vegeta and Goku were set to face off against Ginyu, it was towards the end of the episode where Vegeta flew up and left Goku high and dry. In the next episode they repeated it, but a little differently. That's just something that happens in the series. The one I never understood, and still don't understand, is that episode where the Namekians, Gohan, Bulma, and Vegeta are back on Earth while Goku fights Frieza on Namek. Vegeta has a fight with Gohan, beats up Gohan, and flies away laughing maniacally. In the next episode, Vegeta is standing against a tree and suggests that they wish Goku to the Earth Check-In Station and Gohan is all grateful, smiling, and offers to shake Vegeta's hand.

That first bit was actually just some filler.TheGreatness25 wrote: Vegeta has a fight with Gohan, beats up Gohan, and flies away laughing maniacally. Well at that point, the next chapter had been out for some time. So, since the manga was ahead of the anime, Toei could actually have known what was going to happen. But obviously someone didn't read ahead.TheGreatness25 wrote:I mean put in an argument filler or something, but don't make the guy leave if you don't know what he's doing in the next chapter of the Manga.

As mentioned, it's happened a couple of times throughout the series. My reasoning for the instance with Gohan's transformation is that the animators for that episode wanted to try their hand at the moment themselves instead of simply re-showing the previous episode's footage of the transformation.

It makes me wonder why Vegeta also decided to stop when Piccolo interfered, even though it was filler.desirecampbell wrote:That first bit was actually just some filler.TheGreatness25 wrote: Vegeta has a fight with Gohan, beats up Gohan, and flies away laughing maniacally. Vegeta should have been much stronger after coming back to life.

Well, perhaps he wouldn't be stronger. From what we know of how the "Saiyan healing" works, it's basically the same as how normal muscle mass is built - some damage, damage heals, muscle is larger and stronger than before. Simply being brought back to life might not actually force the body to heal itself, it could simply be creating a new body, or forcing the body back to how it was before death occurred, or something of that nature.Castor Troy wrote:It makes me wonder why Vegeta also decided to stop when Piccolo interfered, even though it was filler.

This bit has always been interesting to me, the two episodes' versions make it to where there is a filler and non-filler version of the transformation.
I imagine the reason the animaters did it was to give one episode a thrilling conclusion and another a thrilling opening; what better way to do that than Gohan's SS2 transformation? Simple enough. A classic example of DBZ's trademark dragged out fight sequnces.
What's always really interested me about the elongated transformation, though, is the idea that Gohan was "Ultra Super Saiyan" for a few moments before definitavely becoming level 2. In the English version at least, Cell says something like: "Foolish boy, you're making the same mistake Trunks did, you think by simply powering up you can defeat me?" Of course, there's not much of a muscle bulge to be noticed and his muscles further bulge when he ascends to SS2; so perhaps it's not a fact, but a cool idea nonetheless. Cool stuff, I watched the Cell Games discs a few days ago.

Maybe this is just the fanboy in me who is constantly making up excuses for American comics chronology, but I saw this as an example of Gohan's infinitely forgiving nature, and a change in Vegeta. Gohan got his ass handed to him, but was willing to forgive Vegeta because he saw the good in him (a trait he got from Goku,) while Vegeta probably flew off, thought about it, and realized that he had nowhere to go. He wants to keep an eye on Goku, so he sticks around and sees what happens.desirecampbell wrote:That first bit was actually just some filler.TheGreatness25 wrote: Vegeta has a fight with Gohan, beats up Gohan, and flies away laughing maniacally. That scene had nothing to do with Gohan and Vegeta's relationship. Vegeta did plenty of bad things to Gohan. The problem with that scene is that Vegeta takes off by himself... and in the next episode just reappears as if nothing happened. Nice try at explaining but it makes little sense. They should've followed up that piece of filler with another piece, with Vegeta coming back at least.

It's simply to make that episode more interesting, it's all about marketing. They know that fans like to see transformations, so they make transformations happen, regardless if it happened in the very end of the previous episode.

Why this happens in Naruto, which is REALLY far away from the manga, which seems to be approaching the end anyway, is completely beyond me, but yeah, that's pretty much what it is.laserkid wrote:It's called recapping/reusing the scene. Even modern shows, like Naruto use this (Naruto uses it to a very painful and every episode basis but I digress).
It's an alternative method to filler to keep the anime behind the manga so they don't run out of material to animate.

I don't know if Shippuden does it but I know it occured at several points in the first series because the studio doing the anime sucks at adding filler and doing pacing, thus making the anime go way to damned fast (hence the 80 or so ep filler stint at the end).Vegard Aune wrote:Why this happens in Naruto, which is REALLY far away from the manga, which seems to be approaching the end anyway, is completely beyond me, but yeah, that's pretty much what it is.laserkid wrote:It's called recapping/reusing the scene. If they're still doing it in Shippuden it's for the same reason. And I don't think the manga's near done yet. I don't see it ending until Nartuo dies or gets the title of Hokage, since that's basicly the point of the thing in the first place.
